AThomas James Hanson will remember for a long time the snowstorm that hit the state of New York on November 22. The 47-year-old man from Niagara Falls was stuck in his car on the highway for almost eight days after his vehicle was accidentally pushed to the side of the road and covered with snow by workers employed to remove the snow from the streets.Driving on the Interstate Highway 190 during the worst of the snowstorm, Mr. Hanson decided to pull over his old 1993 V olkswagen Passat to the side of the road and wait for the weather conditions to improve. He remained motionless for approximately five hours before a snow plow arrived to clear the way. Unfortunately for the poor man, the driver of the gigantic snow removal vehicle did not see the small car, pushing it into the ditch and covering it with more than 2 meters of snow.Fortunately for the father of two children, the snow that was stacked over his vehicle was not very dense and allowed for enough fresh air to get through to enable him to survive. He was able to drink water that he obtained by melting snow with his lighter in an aluminum coffee cup, and he ate the few items of groceries he had bought before going home.“If I had known I would be stuck for eight days, I would have bought more than a jar of dill pickles(咸菜), a bottle of ketchup and two sticks of beef jerky(牛肉干),” said the survivor with a smile.Thomas Hanson had almost lost all hope of being rescued when his car was hit once again this morning by another snow plow, which revealed the poor man’s location.1. What caused Thomas James Hanson to fall into the ditch according to the passage?A. His drunk driving.B. The strong wind.C. The slippery road.D. A snow removal vehicle.2. What can we learn from the passage ?A. Mr. Hanson had bought some food before the accident.B. Mr. Hanson got rescued on November 22 eventually.C. Mr. Hanson had enough bottled water to drink in the car.D. Mr. Hanson was stuck in the car with his children.3. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A. Heavy Snowstorm Caused Disaster to New YorkB. Man Found Alive after Being Stuck 8 Days under SnowC. Thomas James Hanson — a Black Sheep in the SnowD. Wonderful Eight Days of Experience in the SnowBI hated dinner parties. But I decided to give them another shot because I’m in London. And my friend Mallery invited me. And because dinner parties in London are very different from those back in New York. There, “I’m having a dinner party” means “I’m booking a table for 12 at a restaurant you can’t afford and we’ll be sharing the cheque evenly, no matter what you eat.”Worse, in Ma nhattan there is always someone who leaves before the bill arrives. They’ll throw down cash, half of what they owe, and then people like me, who don’t drink, end up paying even more. But if I try to use the same trick, the hostess will shout “Where are you going?” And it’s not like I can say I have somewhere to go: everyone knows I have nowhere to go.But in London, dinner parties are in people’s homes. Not only that, the guests are an interesting mix. The last time I went to one, the guests were from France, India, Denmark and Nigeria; it was like a gathering at the United Nations. In New York, the mix is less striking. It’s like a gathering at Bloomingdale’s, a well-known department store. For New Yorkers, talking about other parts of the world means Brooklyn and Queens in New York. But at Mallery’s, when I said that I had been to Myanmar recently, people knew where it was. In New York people would think it was a usual new club.4. What does the word “shot” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A. Choice.B. Try.C. Style.D. Goal.5. What does the author dislike most about dinner parties in New York?A. There is a strange mix of people.B. The restaurants are expensive.C. The bill is not fairly shared.D. People have to pay cash.6. What is the aut hor’s opinion of some New Yorkers from her experience?A. Easygoing.B. Self-centred.C. Generous.D. Conservative.7. What can we infer from the text?A. The author preferred dinner parties in London to those in New York.B. Mallery invited the author to a party.C. The difference between London and New York.D. The author hated dinner parties.CWhat will man be like in the future — in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively ashort period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity(容量). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need our brains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring a physical change too: the head, especially the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.8. What does the passage mainly tells us?A. Man’s life will be different in the future.B. Future man will look quite different from us.C. Man is growing taller and uglier as time passes.D. The functions of ma n’s organs will change.9. What serves as the evidence that man is changing?A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had.B. Man’s h air is getting thinner and thinner.C. Man’s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker.D. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.10. Why does man’s size of the forehead probably change?A. H e makes use of only 20% of the brain’s capacity.B. His brain has grown larger over the past centuries.C. He will use his brain more and more as time goes on.D. The other 80% of his brain will grow in due time.11. Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future?A. He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.B. He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.C. His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t have to make use of them.D. He thinks and feels in a different way.DSpeaking on the phone or being contacted online with the elderly was not enough to replace seeing them face-to-face — as these forms of contact did nothing to cut their depression risk. A recent study found that older people who saw their family or friends at least three times a week were half as likely to develop depression as those who did not.The study is thought to be the first to examine the impact of different types of social contact on the elderly. It also highlights just how important it is to spend time with our oldergeneration — among whom there is said to be an “epidemic” of loneliness in the UK.The scientists, from the University of Michigan in the US, looked at 11,000 adults aged 50 or over, examining how often they were contacted in person, by telephone and by email or social media. They then looked at the risk of depression two years later. Those who were visited three times a week had a 6.5 percent chance of developing depression, compared to an 11.5 percent risk in those who saw friends and family just once every few months. Frequent phone calls, written or email contact did nothing to reduce the risk of depression. The study also found that younger participants, aged 50 to 69, suffered less depression if they socialized with friends, while those aged over 70 benefited more from contact with family, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reports.Lead author Dr. Alan Teo, who is based at Oregon Health and Science University, said, “Research has long supported the idea that strong social bonds strengthen people’s mental health. But we found all forms of socialization aren’t equal. Phone calls and digital communication do not have the same power as face-to-face social interactions in helping to prevent depression.” Further study needs to be done to explain why.12. Seeing relatives regularly can help older people _____.A. avoid becoming depressedB. live a more independent lifeC. reduce the use of smart phonesD. strengthen their physical health13. What does the study advise the young to do?A. To email their parents often.B. To phone their parents daily.C. To visit their parents in person.D. To contact their parents online.14. What does the text mainly talk about?A. The effects of frequent phone calls on the mental health of the elderly.B. The effects of face-to-face contacts on the mental health of the elderly.C. Ways to help the elderly live more happily.D. The impact of social contact on the mental health of the elderly.15. In which part of a website can you probably find the text?A. Science.B. Technology.C. Fashion.D. Health.

ACanadian’s most famous and successful writers have appeared in the postwar period. A description of some of the best-known of these writers is as follows.Margaret LaurenceShe was born in Manitoba but spent many years living in Africa and began writing there. When she returned to Canada, she wrote a series of books set in the fictional small town of Manawaka in Manitoba. Her 1974 novel in this series, The Diviners, tells about a middle-aged woman, her lower-class adoptive parents, her grownup children, her estranged husband and her lover.Margaret AtwoodShe is the most successful and internationally recognized of current Canadian novelists. Perhaps her best-known novel is The Handmaid’s T ale (1985), a fantasy set in the future in which women have lost all political rights and become the possession of men, valued only for their ability to bear children.Michael OndaatjeHe was born in Sri Lanka and went to school in England and moved to Canada as a young man. He first found success in poet. But he is now best-known as a novelist, particularly for The English Patient, a novel set in the countries around the Mediterranean during the Second World War. Certainly, I was too young to do any heavy lifting, but I remembered feeling a wave of emotion when we completed the project. To now, I’m still addicted to that feeling. I still love g oing back to the place I now call home, the San Francisco Bay Area. Many animal shelters in California lack staff, including the city of Stockton Animal Shelter. My background is in marketing, and in my spare time, I act as webmaster to keep their website up to date. And with a love for animals, I recently just started at Rabbit Rescue as a rabbit socializer!I spend 2 hours a week hanging out with rabbits to make them perfect pets. From just sitting with them to get them used to humans or playing with them to give them exercise, it is the perfect excuse to get out and help animals in need!As you can tell, I have a soft spot for animals. Even as a young child, I wanted to be the voice for them. As I grew older and gained more professional talents, skilled volunteering is where Ifound the greatest reward when using my marketing skills for good and playing with rabbits —now that’s volunteer h eaven! Many people do not want to bring work home. But what if you were using your “work” to help a cause? That is why I think skilled volunteering is so important. Countless nonprofit organizations do not have the budget to hire for every skill. With skilled volunteering, professionals can set aside a few hours a month for specific tasks like graphic designing and accounting. Next time you’re looking for a volunteer job, consider using your professional skills to make a difference!4. We can learn from the first paragraph that .A. the writer finished the work on scheduleB. the writer’s first memory of volunteering is still freshC. the writer was old enough to lift heavy thingsD. it was rather cold on the first day of the writer’s volunteering5. Some have been even registered as companies’ brands. The Chinese Internet b uzzword “thin blue mushroom” was registered on Oct. 13 as a company’s brand in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, with registered capital of 500,000RMB.When spoken in the regional dialect, the Chinese for “sad and feeling like you want to cry” (lan s hou xiang ku) sounds similar to “thin blue mushroom” (lan shou xiang gu). The phrase was popularized thanks to a video in which a young man in Guangxi expressed his disappointment in love affairs. After the video was released several days ago, the phrase soon becomes popular among netizens, no matter whether they are young or old, male or female. When they meet something frustrating and feel sad, they will say “lan shou xiang gu”.According to the new company’s registration information, the business scope o f Thin Blue Mushroom covers a wide range of fields, including equipment manufacturing, engineering and trade. Before this, other buzzwords also became registered brand names in China. After the women’s backstroke semifinal in the Rio Olympic Games, Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui’s exaggerate facial expressions and attribution of her success to “prehistoric powers” gained huge acclaim from netizens. Just two days later, “Prehistoric Power” was registered.Additionally, Wang Jianlin, the richest man in China and chairman of Wanda Group, recently discussed his “small” goalof earning 100,000,000 RMB, attracting many reactions across social media. The company with the brand “Earning 100,000,000RMB” has 2,500,000 RMB at least.DOne of the reasons why we use pillows has something to do with the complicated relationship between our heads, necks and spines (脊柱). When a person is walking upright during the day, the head and neck are held in a vertical line. During sleep, however, many of these muscles relax, causing the head to fall backward or forwards. This places additional stress on the neck muscles and spine, which in turn causes stiffness(僵硬) in the back muscles and spines. The solution to this painful situation is to raise the head and neck until they are back in line with spine, regardless of sleep position. The easiest way to achieve this is to use a pillow so that the head, neck and spine remain at an angle properly. When they are back in a line, a person should be able to breathe easier and improve circulation. There are different forms of supportive pillows. For example, a neck pillow can provide additional support while you are resting. Some users find an improperly sized neck pillow can cause their head to fall too far forward, affecting breathing and creating more pressure on the back of the neck or upper back.Historically, the first cloth pillows were enjoyed almost merely by royal families and other wealthy citizens. Lower-class citizens may have old-fashioned pillows from straw, but more likely they used their own arms to provide support while they slept. Widespread use of pillows was not possible until the Industrial Revolution made the production of cloth an affordable reality. However, certain ancient cultures did not use pillows madefrom soft cloth. Pillows were often carved from stone or wood, which could not claim comfort. Thankfully, modern pillows are filled with feathers and many other soft materials. The trick is to find appropriate pillows to achieve an ideal line for a comfortable night’s sleep.12. The underlined word “vertical” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “”.A. perfectB. full upC. straight upD. special13. A pillow during sleep is to help people .A. adjust their sleeping timeB. achieve a proper sleeping angleC. breathe more quicklyD. improve the blood pressure14. It can be inferred from the text that .A. the comfort of a neck pillow largely depends on its sizeB. only royal families could afford cloth pillows in the pastC. pillows weren’t used until the Industrial RevolutionD. the first pillows in history must have been made from wood15. The last two paragraphs mainly talk about .A. the evolution of pillowsB. why people use pillowsC. how to make comfortable pillowsD. the advantages of pillows第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
