11John was the most famous troublemaker in his town. He didn ’t answer questions and got into lots of fights. He had failed almost every class by the time he got to high school. Everyone thought he was hopeless.I met John for the first time at a weekend training program. All the students at school had been invited to the program which aimed to help them become more active in their communities. At the start of the training, John was standing outside the circle of students. He didn ’t readily join the discussion groups and didn ’t seem to have much to say. But slowly, the discussion drew him in. John had some great ideas and other students in his group welcomed his comments. All of a sudden, he felt like a part of the group, and before long he was treated like a leader. Two weeks later, John and his friends led a group of 70 students to collect food for the needed. They collected a school record: 2,854 cans of food in just two hours.John started showing up at school every day and answered questions from teachers for the first time. He loved and admired the wise man so much that he decided to observe his behavior carefully, believing that if he did everything that the wise man did, then he would also acquire the wise man ’s wisdom. He noticed that the wise man always wore white, and so he went to the market and bought a white rob and wore it every day. The wise man was a vegetarian, and so he stopped eating meat and replaced it with a diet of vegetables. He followed the wise man ’s example in everything he did and was quite sure that he was getting closer to becoming a wise man. After some time, the wise man noticed these changes in his student ’s behavior and asked him why. “I am learning to be just like you,” came the reply. “The white color of my clothes shows the simplicity of my search, the vegetarian food keeps my body clean .”Smiling, the wise man took him to a field where a horse was eating grass. “You have spent all this time looking outside yourself, which is what matters least,” he said. “Do you see that creature there? But why are people left-handed? The answer is in the way the brain works. The brain has two halves — the right half and the left half. The right half controls the left side of the body, and the left controls the right side the body. So right-handed people have a strong left brain, and left-handed people have a strong right brain. The two halves of the brain are about the same size. But each side controls different things. The left side controls language, mathematics, and logic. When you memorize the spelling of words, or when you put things in order, you use your left side. The right side of the brain controls your love of art, color, and music. It is also good at recognizing faces. This does not mean that all artists are left-handed and all accountants are right-handed. There are actually many exceptions. Some right-handers have a strong right brain, and some left-handers have a strong left brain.1. How many people are left-handed?2. Which side of brain do you use when you recognize faces?3. Do you think all artists are left-handed and all accountants are right-handed?Key:1. About 15 percent of the population is left-handed.2. Her devoted husband, Martin, went out and bought her a brand new microwave oven.Christmas approached and Martha got out her Christmas pudding recipe and got all the things ready. When Martha read the microwave’s manual (手册) for the cooking time, she couldn’t believe that ten minutes would be enough for a traditional Christmas pudding. So she decided that she would still follow her normal cooking time of 50 minutes. As Martha was in the sitting-room watching TV, she didn’t hear the pudding spitting in the microwave oven, nor did she see the mini-explosions. Naturally, the pudding was a disaster. In fact the black ball stuck to the bottom of the bowl and Martin had to get a knife to get it off.In a fit of anger, Martha threw the dry Christmas pudding to Kiki, her puppy. One day he went to visit his brother and was astonishedat the beautiful fruit trees. “Look, my brother,” said the gardener, “I will give you an apple tree, the best from my garden, and you, and your children, and your children’s children shall enjoy it.” Then the gardener called his workmen and ordered them to take up the tree and carry it to his brother’s f arm.The next morning the farmer began to wonder where he should plant it. “If I plant it on the hill,” said he to himself, “the wind might shake down the fruit before it is ripe; if I plant it close to the road,passers-by will see it and robe me of its apples — but if I plant it near the door of my house, my children may pick the fruit.” So, after he thought the matter over and over, he planted the tree behind his barn. But the tree bore neither fruit nor flowers the first year nor the second — then the farmer sent for his brother, and said angrily, “You have given me a barren tree instead of a fruitful one!”The gardener laughed and said, “You have planted the tree where it has neither sun nor warmth. How, then, could you expect flowers and fruit? You have planted the tree with a greedy and suspicious heart — how, then, could you expect to reap a rich and generous harvest?”1. A frog fell into the pot while it was sitting on the stove. While it wasn’t his intention to be stuck in a pot of water, he didn’t try to escape. He was comfortable enough as he was.The lady soon turned on the flame to begin boiling the water. As the water’s temperature began to rise, the frog was able to adjust his body temperature accordingly, so he remained in the pot without trying to do anything to change the situation. However, as the water approached its boiling point, the frog’s body temperature could no longer keep up. He finally tried to jump out of the pot, but with water temperature continuing to increase, it was too late for the frog to save himself.Unlike the frog, who waited until the last minute to try to do anything about the problem he was clearly facing, it’s important to predict the future outcomes of the problems and mediate them before they get past the point of no return. You have to avoid wasting time and take proper action before problems get out of hand or become too much to handle.1. What did the lady want to cook?2. Why did the frog not try to get out of the pot at first?3. What do we learn from the story?Keys:1. The lady wanted to cook pasta for her family for dinner.2. It is our most important communication tool. Through language, we can tell other people what we think, how we feel, and what we need. Civilization itself depends on our ability to communicate.Languages survive, grow, disappear, move from place to place, and change with time. Some languages are ancient, and others are new. There are about 6,000 different living languages around the world today, and there are many thousands more that are already extinct. They might sound different, but they are thought to have come from a single ancient language. Some scientists say that people first spoke to one another about two million years ago.Today, our sophisticated languages get fully used in the magazines, novels, science books, and movies that fill our libraries and bookstores. The long stories we can tell separate us from great apes. Other animals may use various methods to communicate, but we humans send complicated messages through space and time. The development of many languages helped humans move forward toward civilization.1. How many different living languages are there today?2. When did people first spoke to one another according to some scientists?3. How does the development of many languages help humans?Keys:1. The weather here in Juárez has become unbearable. With no rains for over a year, the city is suffering from unusually hot weather. Some light showers have been forecast since last month, but all of them have been effective in surrounding areas. Summer has not even started yet, but temperatures have reached 40 degrees centigrade in the past three days. And people have been warned not to go out of their homes — not if you walk on foot, at least — between 11 in the morning and 7 in the evening. Little kids and the elderly are the ones who have suffered the most from this extreme heat wave. They must drink water all the time. To help our audience have a better understanding of this extreme weather, we have invited Prof. Torres from University of Mexico to our studio this evening.1. When did it rain last time in Juárez?2. What are the elderly advised to do?3. What is the speaker doing?Keys:1. A year ago.2. Drink plenty of water./Drink water all the time.3. Hosting a radio program.13Well, I’d love to share with you my personal opinions on city life and life in small towns. I grew up in a small town until I was 18 and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I can’t ima gine ever living in a small town again. Surely small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transport. In a small town, you have to own a car to make life comfortable. You can’t get around without one because there isn’t any kind of publi c transport. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transport, which is cheaper than driving. So, if you don’t have a car, you’d better live in the city. I also love the exciting life in big cities. I can always enjoy a lot of films, concerts, and other wonderful shows. However, these things are not common in small towns. The final thing I like about large cities is that you can meet different kinds of people. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become dull. Of course, safety should be considered, and that’s one area where small towns are better than big cities. Still, I would rathe r be a bit more careful and live in a large city than to feel safe but dull.1. What is the speaker’s opinion on public transport?2. What is good about living in a small town?3. What kind of life does the speaker seem to like most?Keys:1. It’s cheap.2. It’s safer.3. Colourful life.。

For some reason, words with silent letters have always bothered me.For example, consider these words: know, design, island, school, wrist, naughty, and salmon. All of these words have at least one letter that is not typically pronounced, and these words are just a very small part of words with silent letters in them. Some words are even worse, consider this word: colonel. Not only are some letters not pronounced, but letters that are not even there are pronounced.Even foreign languages, especially French, are guilty of this needless complexity and confusion.I know there must be some main historical reasons why the words are spelled and pronounced the way they are, but that does not mean bad traditions must continue to survive.Especially if they are no longer logical.Unfortunately, there is very little that anyone can do for it, because there’s no group of people who can change or have the right to change the English language for everyone. However, the only thing we can do is make changes in the way we talk and write in hopes that it catches on.For example, I pronounce the letter “l” in salmon on purpose to make people annoyed and to sound more different or complicated.I even pronounce colonel the correct or French way.I can only hope these two minor changes to the English language make sense to you, and you will help to keep up these minor changes forever in your everyday life.67.We can learn from the passage ________.A.colonel is pronouncedB.salmon is pronouncedC.all the words with silent letters come from FrenchD.linguists will solve the problem of dumb letters68.Which of the following is the main reason for silent letters?A.French language. B.Historical reasons.C.Some linguists D.Bad traditions.69.The underlined phrase “catches on” probably means “________”.A.becomes popular B.gets acrossC.follows the fashions D.doesn’t fall behind70.Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A.Troubles in everyday life B.Traps in English wordsC.Words with silent letters D.Necessary changes of languages第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)依照短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

第11讲阅读理解2013新题赏析题一:Tail SpinTwo dolphins race around in a big pool in the Ocean Park. The smaller dolphin Grace, shown off a few of her tricks, turning around and waving hello to the crowd. The most amazing thing about her, however, is that she’s even swimming at all. She doesn’t have a tail.Grace lost her tail as a baby when she got caught up in a fish trap. When the dolphin arrived at the Ocean Park in December 2005,she was fighting for her life. “Is she going to make it?” Her trainer, Abbey Stone, feared the worst. Grace did make it --- but her taildidn’t. She ended up losing her flukes and the lower part of her peduncle. Over the past six years, she has learned to swim without her tail. Dolphins swim by moving their flukes and peduncle up and down. Grace taught herself to move another way---like a fish! She pushed herself forward through the water by moving her peduncles from side to side. The movement put harmful pressure on Grace’s backbone. So a company offered to create a man-made tail for her. The tail had to be strong enough to stay on Grace as she swam but soft enough that it wouldn’t hurt her.The first time Grace wore the artificial tail. She soon shook it off and let it sink in the bottom of the pool. Now, she is still learning to use the tail. Some days she wears it for an hour at a time, others not at all. “The tail isn’t necessary for her to feel comfortable,” says Stone, “but it helps to keep that range of motion(动作) and build muscles(肌肉).”Now, the dolphin is about to get an even happier ending. This month, Grace will star in Dolphin Tale, a film that focuses on her rescue and recovery. Her progress has inspired more than just a new movie. Many people travel from near and far to meet her. Seeing Grace swim with her man-made tail gives people so much courage.60. We do know, however, that they existed over 5,500 years ago in ancient Asia. The oldest known transport wheel was discovered in 2002 in Slovenia. It is over 5,100 years old. Evidence suggests that wheels for transport didn’t become popular fora while, though. This could be because animals did a perfectly good job of carrying farming tools and humans around. But it could also be because of a difficult situation. While wheels need to rollon smooth surfaces, roads with smooth surfaces weren’t going to be constructed until there was plenty of demand for them. Eventually, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had beenno important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of modem road design. In the mid-1700s, a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer (层)of large stones covered with a thin layer of smaller stones. A Scotsman improvedon this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same lime, metal hubs (the central part of a wheel) came into being, followed by the pneumatic tyre(充气轮胎) in 1846. Alloy wheels were invented in 1967, sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads (柏油路). As wheel design took off, vehicles got faster and faster.64. What might expl ain why transport wheels didn’t become popular for some time?A. Few knew how to use transport wheels.B. Humans carried farming tools just as well.C. Animals were a good means of transport.D. The existence of transport wheels was not known.65. What do we know about road design from the passage?A. It was easier than wheel design.B. It improved after big changes in vehicle design.C. It was promoted by fast-moving vehicles.D. It provided conditions for wheel design to develop.66. How is the last paragraph mainly developed?A. By giving examples.B. By making comparisons.C. By following time order.D. By making classifications.67. What is the passage mainly about?A. The beginning of road design.B. The development of transport wheels.C. The history of public transport.D. His invention of fast-moving vehicles.语句学习1. Almost every machine with moving parts has wheels, yet no one knows exactly when the first wheel wasinvented or what it was used for.2. Fundy National Park.C.KluaneNational Parkand Reserve.D.Prince Edward IslandNational Park.BWhile space travel still gets lot of attention, not enough attention has been paid to the exploration of oceans, about which we know much less than the dark side of the moon.Ninety percent of the ocean floor has not even been recorded and while we have been to the moon, the technology to explore the ocean's floors is still being developed. For example, a permanent partially-underwater sea exploration station, called the Sea Orbiter, is currently in development. The oceans play a major role in controlling our climate. But we have not learned yet how to use them to cool us off rather than contribute to our overheating. Ocean organisms are said to hold the promise of cures for a wide of the unique eyes of skate (ray fish) led to advances in conquering blindness, the horseshoe crab was important in developing a test for bacterial pollution, and sea urchins helped in the development of test-tube fertilization(人工授精). The toadfish's' ability to regenerate its central nervous system is of much interest to neuroscientists. A recent Japanese study concluded that the drug Eribulin, which was taken from sea sponges, is effective in fighting with breast, colon, and Urinary cancer.Given the approaching crisis of water insufficiency, we badly need to improve current methods, of desalinating(淡化) ocean water and make them more efficient and less costly. By 2025, 1.8 billion people are expected to suffer from severe water shortage, with that number jumping to 3. 9 billion by 2050-well over a third of the entire global population. If the oceansdo not make your heart go beating faster, how about engineering a bacterium that eats carbon dioxide — and thus helps protect the world from overheating — and produces fuel which will allow us to drive our cars and machines, without oil? I cannot find any evidence that people young or old, Americans or citizens of other nations would be less impressed or less inspired with such a breakthrough than with one more set of photos of a faraway galaxy or a whole Milky Way full of stars.4. What does the author think about the ocean exploration?A. It is equal to the space exploration.B. It is well developed.C. It deserves more attention and devotion.D. It is beyond our knowledge.5. Space, the Final Frontier.D. Space, the Faraway Dream.CThe Native American of northern California were highly skilled at basketry, using the reeds, graeses, barks, and roots they found around them to fashion articles of all sorts and sizes-not only trays, containers, and cooking pots, but hats, boats, fish traps, baby carriers, and ceremonial objects.Of all these experts, none excelled the Pomo-a group who lived on or near the coast during the 1800's, and whose descendants continue to live in parts of the same region to this day. They made baskets three feet in diameter and othersno bigger than a thimble (顶针). The Pomo people were masters of decoration. Some of their baskets were completely covered with shell pendants;others with feathers that made the baskets’ surfaces as soft as the breasts of birds. Moreover, the Pomo people made use of more weaving techniques than did their neighbors. Most groups made al their basketwork by twining--the twisting of a flexible horizontal material, called a weft, around stiffer vertical strands of material, the warp. Others depended primarily on coiling-a process in which a continuous coil of stiff material is held in the desired shape with tight wrapping of flexible strands. Only the Pomo people used both processes with equal ease and frequency. In addition, they made use of four distinct variations on the basic twining process, often employing more than one of them in a single article.Although a wide variety of materials was available, the Pomo people used only a few. The warp was always made of willow, and the most commonly used weft was sedge root, a woody fiber that could easily be separated into strands no thicker than a thread. For color1 , the Pomo people used the bark of red-bud for their twined work and dyed bullrush root for black in coiled work. Though other materials were sometimes used, these four were thestaples in their finest basketry. If the basketry materials used by the Pomo people were limited, the designs were amazingly varied. Every Pomo basket maker knew how to produce from fifteen to twenty distinct patterns that could be combined in a number of different.8. The word “fashion” in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.A. maintainB. organizeC. tradeD. create9. What is the author's main point in paragraph 2?A. The Pomo people learned their basket weaving techniques from other Native Americans.D. The Pomo baskets have been handed down for generations.10. According to the passage, the relationship between red-bud and twining is most similar to the relationship between ______.A. bullrush and coilingB. weft and warpC. willow and feathersD. sedge and weaving11. Which of the following statements about Pomo baskets can be best inferred from the passage?A. Baskets produced by other Native Americans were less varied in design than those of the Pomo.B. Baskets produced by Pomo weaves were primarily for ceremonial and religious purposes.C. There were a very limited number of basket-making materials available to the Pomo people.D. The basket-making production of the Pomo people has been increasing over the years.DMy wife and I recently completed a day-long tour of the Great Wall with Jessie. In addition to being very knowledgeable about the history of theareas that we toured, she spoke excellent English and was able to answer all of our questions. Her driver was very experienced and polite, and we really enjoyed being able to have a customized tour that avoided the tourist traps and forced shopping that seem to be a part of the larger group tours. The attractions themselves were fantastic. I was a little worried that the snowy weather might impact our trip to the Great Wall, but everything went fine, and there weren’t many people out at all that day. I suggest wearing strong shoes—the Great Wall is really a hike. And in snowy or rainy days, the surfaces are pretty slippery (滑的)! Seeing this area in winter was really unique, and the snow made for great pictures. Jessie kept us entertained withstories and facts about the construction of the Wall, and always pointed out great spots for taking pictures. Even though she’s in fantastic shape, she cared about our level of fitness and often stopped to let us catch our breath. When we got back to our hotel, Jessie gave us a great recommendation for dinner and some tips for our planned stops the next day. If I find myself in Beijing in the future, I will certainly be contacting Jessie for more tour opportunities, and I’ve already recommended her to some friends who are visiting the area later in the year. I can’t say enough about how kind and knowledgeable she was, and she really gave us a great tour experience.12. What can we infer about Jessie?A. She is a tour advisor.B. She is a tour guide.C. She is a foreign traveler.D. She is a skilled driver.13. When did the writer visit the Great Wall?A. In spring.B. In summer.C. In autumn.D. In winter.14. What did the writer think of his tour?A. Adventurous.B. Disappointing.C. Satisfactory.D. Improvable.15. What is the probable title for the text?A. A Wonderful Tour Day with JessieB. An Extraordinary Tour CompanyC. Do youfrequently ignore work, study, and other activities to check your phone for messages? Are you anxious and restless if you are separated from your mobile phone? Do youhardly ever use your phone to talk any more, and do your thumbs hurt from textingtoo much?[2]If ______________________, then it is very possible that you are atextaholic. A textaholic can be defined as someone who is addicted to sending andreceiving messages. The main symptoms are a strong desire to text messages, whichtakes precedence (优先)over everything else, and bad moods, low spirits and a lackof selfconfidence if messages fail to come in. The root of the problem, as withmany addictions, is the desire to escape from emotional difficulties such as stress, anxiety and relationship problems. Experts warn that text addiction is likely tobecome the most common form of addiction in the future, especially among the young.[3] So what can you do if you think you may be a textaholic? The key is to getyour life back in balance. Make sure you resist the urge to answer every messageyou receive, and consider leaving your mobile phone behind occasionally when yougo out. Most importantly, make a point of spending quality time with friends andfamily, and make time to relearn the art of facetoface conversation instead ofconducting your relationships by means of text messages. For one thing, with digitalbroadcasting, there are now many more TV channels than there were even then yearsago. Moreover, sport has become an important from of entertainment, appealing toboth men and women.(3)What are the benefits of this state of affairs? One obvious advantage to the profession is the addition of money provided by television companies. Large football clubs benefit financially from TV income and the top players can command very large salaries. Less popular sports also receive money that can be used in training and awarenessraising. What’s more, there is a health benefit to some of the population, because through televised sport, more people have become interested in actually playing sport.(4)However, ________ if so much sport is on television. Considering football again, many small clubs have suffered financial losses recently, as they cannot compete with the large ones. There has been a general falling in ticket sales, especially among smaller clubs. Fewer people attend live matches nowadays, preferring to watch from the comfort of their living room.
