课时提升作业十四必修3Unit 4Astronomy: the science of the stars(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AFor your next out-of-this-world vacation, you now have theoption of literally going out of this world—but i t’ll cost you $40million. Then again, can you really put a price tag on having the time of your life? According to a new report from Popular Mechanics, Russia is looking to build a luxury hotel in outer space. There you will wake up to a breathtaking blue planet—the earth! The hotel is expected to be stationed on the International Space Station (ISS).While space tourism itself isn’t exactly a novel idea, the notion of building a hotel out there hasn’t been raised before. Really, other companies a re still focused on the transportation part of the puzzle—after all, a trip to space is enough for most folks.According to Popular Mechanics, the hotel will include a luxury orbital suite with big windows, personal hygiene (卫生) facilities, exercise equipment, and yes, Wi-fi. Because if you can’t share your experience on social media, did it really even happen?Of course, the reasons behind the hotel aren’t just for fun and games. Apparently, space tourism might be able to help the Russians pay for another module to add to the international Space Station. Russian space contractor RKK Energia is currently building the first such module, which will give scientists a laboratory and power supply station from which to conduct tests. If any of this is going to happen, however, Russia is going to have to hurry. With the ISS expected to be out of use in 2028, there’s little time to build the hotel and find wealthy tourists to actually buy a trip into outer space. So if you’ve recently come into a fortune and are interested in investing in what could be the time of your life, ISS is calling your name.【文章大意】本文讲述的是“太空旅行”。

BYou may have never heard of Lanthanum, Cerium or Neodymium, but these elements (元素) and others known as “rare earth” play a major role in modern technology. They can actually be found in many places on the earth, but not in quantities that can be mined. Only a few countries—China, America, India, Australia, Brazil and Malaysia have any that can be mined enough to be traded.Even though some of these elements such as Cerium are as abundant as Copper, they are not found in concentrated amounts on the earth’s surface. They are often mixed together with other metals, which makes extraction (提取) of these elements an expensive and an environmentally messy process. It was due to this reason that the term “rare earth” was invent ed.Rare earth metals are used widely in our life. Rechargeable car batteries, computers, iPhones, DVD players, computer monitors, televisions, lighting, lasers, glass polishing, and superconductors all use quantities of rare earth metals. Also, with the advancement in “green” technology like solar panels, these shiny materials are becoming more important than ever. An average electric car uses 10 pounds of Lanthanum for its rechargeable battery!America has large deposits (存储量) of rare earths and has one of the first mines. It was opened in Southern California in 1940. The element “Europium” was the first metal to be separated in quantity for use in color televisions. However, in the 1980’s and 1990’s, as China started producing these element s in Inner Mongolia, the mines in America and elsewhere could not keep pace. The mine in Mountain Pass, California also failed environmental regulations and shut down in 2002.Now, recognizing the importance of having more than one supplier of this important resource, other rare earth owning countries like India and Australia are either dusting off their rare earth mines or speeding up their production. It is believed that the debate over rare earths will become louder in the coming months and years. 【文章大意】文章主要就稀土的相关情况进行了简单的介绍。

off to work. One morning,in addition to his usual lunch bag,Molly handed him a second paper bag. This one was worn and held together with staples (书钉).“Why two bags?” her father asked.“The other is something else,” Molly answered.“What’s in it?”“Just some stuff (东西).Take it with you.”Not wanting to discuss the matter,he put both sacks into his briefcase, kissed Molly and rushed off.At midday he opened Molly’s bag and took out the contents:two hair ribbons (丝带),three small stones,a plastic dinosaur,a tiny sea shell,a small doll, and 13 pennies...The busy father smiled, finished eating, and swept the desk clean into the wastebasket,Molly’s stuff incl uded. That evening,Molly ran up behind him as he read the paper.“Where’s my bag?”“What bag?”“The one I gave you this morning.”“I left it at the office,my dear.”“I forgot to put this note in it,” she said.“And,besides,Daddy, the things in the sack are the things I really like.I thought you might like to play with them. You didn’t lose the bag,did you,Daddy?”“Oh,no,” he said, lying.“I just forgot to bring it home.I’ll bring it tomorrow.”While Molly hugged her father’s neck,he unfolded the note that read,“I lov e you,Daddy.” Molly had given him her treasures—all that a 7yearold held dear.Love was in a paper bag,and he missed it—not only missed it,but had thrown it in the wastebasket. So he went back to the office.Just ahead of the night janitor (看门人),he picked up the bag from the wastebasket. He put the treasures inside and carried it home carefully. The bag didn’t look so good, but the stuff was all there and that’s what counted. After dinner,he asked Molly to tell him about the stuff in the sack.It took a long time to tell.Everything had a story or a memory.“Sometimes I think of all the great times in this sweet life.” he thought. We should all remember that it’s not the destination that counts in life, but the journey. That journey with the people we love is all that really matters. It is such a simple truth but it is so easily forgotten.1.Why did Molly give her father a second bag?A.She didn’t want to keep the things in the Bag.B.She hoped those things would bring happiness to her father.C.She wanted to remind her father of the stories behind the things.D.She enjoyed playing with her father.2.How did Father deal with the bag after he opened it?A.He kept it in the drawer.B.He took it back home.C.He seeds of success were planted within you when you were born.Only you have the power to make those seeds grow. The seeds and the power to grow them are contained in the human mind.Success is a choice but not a chance. You can be a success if only you make the right choice. You cannot be successful without first developing yourselfesteem (自尊).Your level of selfesteem is always based on the deg ree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life.People with low selfesteem do not believe that they have any power,or responsibility for their lives. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance brought about with any sudden change in the weather. You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for whatever happens in your life.Failures think that everything happens by accident while successful people realize that they are responsible.Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the The people at the store weren't much help. They couldn't understand why someone wouldn't want a phone the size of a postage stamp. And the rate plans! They were confusing, and expensive … and the contract(合同)lasted for two years! I'd almost given up until a friend told me about her new Jitterbug phone. Now, I have the convenience and safety of being about to stay in touch with a phone I can actually use.”Affordable plans that I can understand—and no contract to sign (签订)! Unlike other cellphones,Jitterbug has plans that make sense. Why should I pay for minutes I'm never going to use? And if I do talk more than I plan,I won't find myself with no minutes like my friend who has a prepaid phone.Best of all, there is no contract to sign, so I'm not locked in for years at a time. The USbased customer service is second to none. And the phone gets service anywhere in the country.you don't love it, just return it! Why wait, the Jitterbug comes ready to use right out of the box.If you aren't as happy with it as I am, you can return it and get your money back.Call now, the Jitterbug product experts are ready to answer your questions.Call 18888098794 or visit .11.What made “I” finally think of getting a cellphone?A.Being stuck by the highway.B.Being urged by his grandkids.C.Being persuaded by cellphone salespersons.D.Being attracted by the friendly return policy.12.On the monthly basis of 100 minutes, the Jitterbug weekly rate is about________.A.$3.75 B.$4.99C.$14.99 D.$19.9913.An advantage of Jitterbug mentioned in the passage is ________.A.its discount price with a free giftB.its reasonable rate plans without a contractC.its “globalpositioning” system with 911 AccessD.its good customer service all over the world14.The main purpose of the passage is to________.A.tell a customer's story of JitterbugB.provide two ways to order JitterbugC.give a brief introduction of JitterbugD.attract potential customers to JitterbugBA funny thing happened on the way to the communications revolutions: we stopped talking to one another.I was walking in the park with a friend recently, and his cellphone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and I became invisible, absent from the conversation. The telephone used to connect you to the absent.Now_it_makes_people_sitting_next_to_you_feel_absent.Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With email and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mum has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine. As almost every contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the alienation index goes up.You can't even call a person to get the phone number of another person any more.Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.I am not against modern technology.I own a cellphone, an ATM card, a voice mail system, and an email account.Giving them up isn't wise; they're a great help to use. It's some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.More and more,I find myself hiding behind email to do a job meant for conversation or being relieved that voice mail picked up because I didn't really have time to talk. The industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier. So I've put myself on technology restriction: no instant messaging with people who live near me,no cellphoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I'm at home.15.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?A.The advance of communications technologyB.The consequences of modern technologyC.The story of communications revolutionD.The automation of modern communications16.The sentence “Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent.”means that________.A.the people sitting beside you have to go away to receive a phone callB.you can hardly get in touch with the people sitting beside youC.modern technology makes it hard for people to have a facetoface talk D.people can now go to work without going to the office17.The writer feels that the use of modern communications is ________.A.encouragingB.disappointingC.satisfyingD.embarrassing18.The passage implies that ________.A.modern technology is bridging the peopleB.modern technology is separating the peopleC.modern technology is developing too fastD.modern technology is interrupting our communicationsⅢ.完成句子19.During those four years, he worked day and night, thus gradually ____________________ until it was complete.(improve)在那四年里,他夜以继日地工作,就这样逐渐地改进他的理论,直到它臻于完善。

Unit 4Astronomy: the science of the stars课时作业Ⅰ.阅读(2020·贵阳市普通高中高三年级摸底考试)Many of us think, wrongly, that the moon doesn't change. For example, the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ruoxu once wrote that “Generations have e and passed away; From year to year the mo ons look alike, old and new.”However, a new study published in the journal Nature Geoscience shows that the moon is in fact slowly shrinking over time. For the study, a group of US scientists examined and analyzed thousands of photographs taken by the NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (月球勘测轨道飞行器照相机). They found that there were lots of faults (断层) on the surface of the moon. These faults were formed by recent movement on the moon.According to NASA, the moon is made up of pieces of rocks with a hot core. The moon continued to expand as it was born. But in this process, it released energy and cooled down. Then it began to shrink, in a way parable to the shrinking of a grape into a raisin. Over the past several hundred million years, it has bee 46 met ers “skinnier”. But due to its hard and rocky layer, the moon's surface continues to push up. “Some of these quakes can be fairly strong, around five on the Richter scale (里氏震级),” said Thomas Watters, a senior scientist at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in the US.But does that mean the moon is a dangerous place that human shouldn't try to explore and live on in the future? Maybe not, reported The Telegraph.“This isn't anything to worry about. The moon may be shrinking, but not by much. It's not going anywhere,” Watters forted us.The new discovery proves that the idea that the moon is a dead, boring place is wrong. “We have been to the moon and we've done some great science, but there is still a lot we don't know. The moon is shrinking—we didn't really realize that until recently. It's a much more active and interesting place than we thought and we should explore that,” NASA scientist Nathan Williams said.篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。

By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft (透支) as a way of extending their spending power.Pfeg predicts that these young people will find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents’ generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8, 000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.1. The passage is mainly about _______ .A. how to manage school lessonsB. how to deal with the financial crisisC. teaching young people about moneyD. teaching students how to study effectively2. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that _______ .A. the author complains about the school educationB. pupils should not be taught to add up and subtractC. students have been taught to manage their financesD. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out3. The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _______ .A. instruct the pupils to donate their pocket moneyB. promote the connection of schools and familiesC. ask the government to dismiss the parliamentD. appeal for the curriculum of financial education4. to learn that it is very important to learn to say “no”.It’s okay.Peo ple are still going tolike you. They may even respect you more because they know you are honest.I’m not saying to say “no” to someone who really needs your help.I’m talking about turning down that meeting that you really do not want to attend or that birthday party that you don’t want to be a guest at.Think for a moment how you feel when you say “yes” to something that you really don’t want to do.If you’re like I once was,you can’t sleep at night and you think about it too much.It weighs on your mind. You try to find ways out.Whatever you’re saying to yourself,if you really wanted to go,you wouldn’t have all of these thoughts. So,why not just say “no” from the beginning?May be you feel like if you don’t show up at the meeting (by the way,it is not one you must attend),your boss isn’t going to like you or your coworkers won’t respect you.Maybe you feel as if your mom,dad or sisters won’t love you as much if you don’t do every thing for them what they ask every occasion. If these people are your true friends, family members,or a good boss, they will like or love you the same no matter what.People treat you the way you teach them to,and if you’re someone who always says “yes”,then that’s what they’re expecting. You need to do what is right for you.Of course we do have real obligations in life to fulfill, but we do not have to do everything others want us to do.1.Which of the following statements would the writer agree with?A.We should try to do what our friends ask us to do.B.We should help others in need.C.Always saying “yes” means you are dishonest.D.Always saying “no” means you are brave.2.Generally speaking,we agree to do what we hate to do because we________.A.have a bad habit B.have a kind heartC.have much concern D.have obligations3.The writer believes that if you say “no” to your family members,you’ll________.A.have the same relationship with them as beforeB.have a loose relationship with themC.disappoint themD.upset them4.What would be the best title for the text?A.Learn to Make a Right ChoiceB.To Be YourselfC.Do What You Want to DoD.Learn to Say “No”B(2013·福建质量检测)In the 1950s,a family who owned a farm near Beulah,Michigan kept a bull chained to an elm (榆树).The bull paced around the tree, dragging the heavy iron chain, which led to a groove (槽) in the bark. The groove deepened over the years, though for whatever re ason,it did not kill the tree. After some years, the family took their bull away. They cut the chain, leaving the loop (圈) around the tree and one link hanging down. Then one year, agricultural disaster struck Michigan in the form of Dutch Elm Disease. All of the elms lining the road leading to the farm became infected and died.Everyone thought that the old elm would be next. The farm’s owners considered doing the safe thing:pulling it out and cutting it up into firewood before it died. But they simply could not bring themselves to do it.It was as if the old tree had become a family friend. So they decided to let_nature_take_its_course.Amazingly,the tree did not die.Nobody could understand why it was the only elm that was still standing in the country!Plant pathologists(病理学家) from Michigan State University came out to observe the tr ee.They observed the scar left by the iron chain, now almost completely covered by bark. The plant experts decided that it was the chain that saved the elm’s life. They reasoned that the tree must have absorbed so much iron from the chain that it became immune (免疫) to the fungus (真菌).It’s said that what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.Or,as Ernest Hemimgway put it,“Life breaks us all,but afterwards, many of us are strongest at the broken places.”5.What happened to the elms in Michigan during the agricultural disaster?A.The elms were tied by iron chains.B.Some of the elms were cut up into firewood.C.All the elms were infected by a disease and died.D.Nearly all of the elms died of a disease.6.From the passage we can learn that the old elm was saved by________.A.the groove in the bark B.the fungus in the treeC.the iron remaining in it D.its own immune system7.The underlined sentence “let_nature_take_its_course” means______.A.leave the elm at the mercy of natureB.help the elm grow normallyC.let nature take the elm awayD.have nature give a lesson to the elm8.What is the
