万圣节前夜起源于不列颠凯尔特人的传统节日 萨温节（Samhain），在10月的最后一天，他们 相信这是夏天的终结，冬天的开始，这一天是 一年的重要标志，是最重要的节日之一，被称 为“死人之日”，或者“鬼节”。这一天各种 恶鬼出没，死去人们的灵魂也会离开身体，在 世间游走，这一天的晚上也就格外危险。为了 吓走邪恶的鬼魂，凯尔特人会戴上面具，把自 己打扮成妖魔鬼怪把死人之魂灵吓走。

万圣夜的象征物是南瓜灯（也叫杰克灯、 杰克灯笼），这又是一个源于古代爱尔兰 的故事。一个名叫杰克（JACK） 的人， 是个醉汉且爱恶作剧。一天杰克把恶魔骗 上了树，随即在树桩上刻了个十字，恐吓 恶魔令他不敢下来，然后杰克就与恶魔约 法三章，让恶魔答应施法让杰克永远不会 犯罪为条件让他下树。 杰克死后，其灵 魂既不能上天又不能下地狱，他的亡灵只 好靠一根小蜡烛指引他在天地之间倘佯。 在古老的爱尔兰传说里，这根小蜡烛是在 一根挖空的萝卜里放着，称作“JACK LANTERN”，而古老的萝卜灯演变到今天 ，则是南瓜做的 JACK-O-LATERN 了。据说 爱尔兰人到了美国不久，即发现南瓜不论 从来源和雕刻来说都比萝卜胜一筹，于是 南瓜就成了万圣节的宠物。
