Across the street was a gas station, which was closed for Christmas, but I noticed a family standing under the narrow overhang to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I couldn’t wait to see my gifts.Once I got home, there was hardly any time to enjoy my gifts. My grandparents were still waiting for us to have Christmas dinner together at their house. As we drove down the highway, I noticed that the family was still there. The closer we got to my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father U-turned and said, “I can’t stand it!” “What?” asked my mother. “It’s those people back there at the gas station, standing in the rain.”When my father pulled into the station, I saw there were five of them: the parents and three children—two girls and a small boy. Then we learned that the family was waiting for the bus to Birmingham, where the man planned to find a job.“Well, that bus won’t come along for several hours. Winborn’s just a few milesaway, and there is a shed (棚) with a cover there,” my father advised. “I will run you up there.”Then they climbed into our car,. My father looked back and asked the children if Father Christmas had found them. Three sad faces gave him his answer.“Well, Father Christmas said he was having trouble finding you, so he just left your toys at my house this morning. Let’s go to get them first,” my father said. In those days she had always picked up hitchhikers (搭便车者), until the day her sister told her of a friend who had been killed by a hitchhiker, all because she had stopped out of kindness to help him during a storm. Her family worried about her safety over the hitchhikers until the family heard her promise: “No more hitchhikers!”Then, one night, she saw a man waving. She slowed down for him, but now as he ran toward the car in the dark she shook with fear. Yet she thought that if he was truly in need she couldn’t leave him here in this storm. The stranger explained that his car was broken, and she told him to get in the car. They drove for an hour into the next city and she took him to a telephone booth (公用电话亭). When he reported back to her that a family member would soon come for him, she wished him well and left.Tears fell on her cheeks as she drove away. He will be glad to eat foods that he has helped to put on the table. The mealtime environment has a lot to do with how your child will feel about food. Try to serve your meals at the same place at the same time of a day. Keep the meal itself as the main event and leave the toys and television for later use.Snacks are also important. We can give our body and brain energy by eating snacks between meals. Children are often hungriest in the afternoon after school andin the evening.Offer snacks at regular time between meals. For example, a Colombian who wants someone to approach him often signals with a hand movement in which all the fingers of one hand, cupped, point downward as they move rapidly back and forth. Speakers of English have a similar gesture though the hand may not be cupped and the fingers may be held more loosely, but for them the gesture means goodbye or go away, quite the opposite of the Colombian gesture. Again, in Colombia, a speaker of English would have to know that when he indicates height he must choose between different gestures depending on whether he is referring to a human being or an animal. If he keeps the palm of the hand parallel to the floor, as he would in his own culture when making known the height of a child, for example, he will very likely be greeted by laughter; in Colombia this gesture is reserved for the description of animals. In order to describe human beings he should keep the palm of his hand at a right angle to the floor. Substitutions of one gesture for the other often create not only humorous but also embarrassing moments. In both of the examples above, speakers from two different cultures have the same gesture, physically, but its meaning differs sharply.。

But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widely spread among university students. Almost all their assignment and essays are typed on a computer. All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer. It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.“When I’m w riting with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it.”“I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite? Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintaintheir practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的)and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand. 8.The underlined expression “taking stock in” in paragraph 4 probably means.A. getting bored withB. getting dependent onC. becoming crazy aboutD. getting curious about9.The students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly because ___________.A. they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and convenientlyB. they are usually asked to e-mail their homework and essaysC. they find it not easy to remember how to write a characterD. computers have become a trend and fashion in China10.Which of the following statement is NOT true of the advantage of handwriting?A. Most of us might think of crowds of teenagers in a 1950’s movie house watching Bwana Devil in 3-D. But 3-D technology made its first appearance on the scene in 1838 with the first stereoscope(体视镜). And the first actual 3-D movie was a 1903 film called Le Ariveed’un Train.Although it has such a long history, the technology has still remained based on one simple principle-----to make 3-D effects you must find a way to project two slightly different pictures to each eye. Modern 3-D technology works by rapidly flickering(闪动)two versions of the movie and projecting them onto each eye. The brain does the rest of the work, combining the two pictures together into one and giving the show the appearance of depth, the third dimension. But does this exposure, especially long exposures, cause harm to the child’sdeveloping brain and visual system? Unfortunately, long-term studies on new flicker digital 3-D technology and children aren’t yet available. We d o not know if regular or daily 3-D viewing over years affects the developing visual system, although older 3-D methods basically do the same thing and are not considered harmful. The question of possible harm in modern 3-D use in TV is really based on two facts: the amount of time children will now be watching 3-D TV each day and the sensitivity some children show in reaction to 3-D viewing. It is difficult to make actual lab studies of longer term 3-D viewing in children because of the possible harm of the experiment. Researchers will have to wait until 3-D TV technology is already in the marketplace for a number of years, then check heavy 3-D TV watchers and compare them with non-watchers.With a 3-D television technology in the home, we will soon be able to answer the question of whether or not longer and more frequent periods of 3-D exposure cause more changes in the visual system. We may find that the bigger problem is the introduction of a new technology that leads to even more time spent on TV rather than playing outdoors.12.According to the text, 3-D technology ______A. was refused by people when it first appeared.B. will soon change the way we watch TV.C. does no good to our visual system.D. has a history of nearly 200 years.13.Paragraph 2 is mainly about________A. how 3-D technology works.B. why 3-D movies are popularC. the history of 3-D technology.D. the influence of 3-D technology.14.What’s the method suggested in paragraph 4?A. To wait and seeB. To carry out lab studiesC. To stop making 3-D moviesD. To improve 3-D technology15.The author’s purpose in writing the text is to _______A. ask children not to watch 3-D moviesB. discuss if 3-D viewing is harmful to children.C. introduce the advantages of 3-D technology.D. predict the development of 3-D technology.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AIt should come as no surprise that kids are spending a lot of time in front of screens. According to a new study, teens aged from 13 to 18 spend an average of six and a half hour each day watching TV or using a digital device. Here are some truths and some myths(谬见) that the study showed:Truth 1: Some teens spend too much time looking at screens. One in five teens views more than six hours of screen media each day, and 18% of teens are looking at their screens for more than 10 hours a day.Myth 1: This is the end of reading. While the average time young people spend reading, either in print or on a screen, is only 30 minutes per day, most kids who took part in the survey say reading is one of their favorite activities.Truth 2: Boys prefer video games; girls prefer social media.Among teen boys, 71% enjoy playing video games, twice as many as teen girls. Teen girls, meanwhile, spend about 40 minutes more each day on social media than boys do. Myth 2: TV and music have been put aside. For teens, TV is still the top media activity. Most teens listen to it on their smartphones.Truth 3: Gamers don’t get out as much as kids who don’t play video games.Kid report spending about an hour each day being physically active. For gamers, that average drops to 47 minutes, the lowest for any kind of media consumer. Socialmedia users are the most active, spending one hour and 13 minutes per day doing some form of physical activity.Myth 3: The Digital Revolution is making young people more creative than ever.Nowadays, kids are too busy consuming to be doing much producing. A new study has found that for intelligent people, the more frequently they socialize with friends, the less satisfied they are with life. The findings come from two psychologists who challenge the modern view that the more social contact we have, the happier we are likely to be. Satoshi Kanazawa of the London School of Economics and Norman Li of Singapore Management University suggest that the main social skills developed in our ancient past still have an important effect on our happiness today. They think that the ‘savannah theory’(草原理论) is at the root of modern happiness. This theory states that the factors which made early humans satisfied are still true in modern life.Using data from a long-term study, which surveyed adults aged from 18 to 28, they applied the theory to explain findings of self-reported levels of life satisfaction. The pair focused on just two of the many factors, which they say are the way our ancestors lived—population density(密度) and how frequently we communicate withfriends. As might be expected, they found people living in more densely populated areas reported lower levels of life satisfaction. Also as we might expect, more frequent socialization with friends was linked to higher levels of life satisfaction. But these two factors have a strong connection with intelligence. The two experts explained that “among the extremely intelligent”, more frequent social activities can actually reduce satisfaction.Kanazawa and Li’s study suggests the brains of our ancestors were perfectly adapted to life on the African savannah, where the population would have been small, living in groups of around 150.Social activities would have been extremely important to survival, in terms of cooperation and finding a mate, but space was equally important. The pair believes there may be a mismatch between the way we have evolved(进化) and the high-speed lives we lead today—where society has left our minds and bodies struggling to keep up.The researchers believe smarter individuals may be able to better adapt to the challenges of modern life.4. According to the text, Kanazawa and Li _________.A. disagree with the ‘savannah theory’B. agree that social contact can make people happierC. think the level of life satisfaction is related to intelligenceD. think the social skills developed in our ancient past are meaningless5. What can we learn about the ‘savannah theory’ from the text?A. It can not be applied to modern life.B. It focuses on population density.C. It was proposed by our ancestors living on the African savannah.D. It states that what made our ancestors happy can also make us happy.6. Kanazawa and Li’s research shows that _________.A. the smarter one is, the happier one will beB. smart people don’t like to socialize with othersC. socializing with others can reduce smart people’ life satisfactionD. smart people can benefit a lot from their social activities7. Where can you probably read this text?A. In a medical magazine.B. In a physics textbook.C. In a book about evolution.D. In a research report.CWhen I was a teenager I used to take long walks in the woods behind our home.I found it a great way to clear my head, a good way to calm my spirit, and a wonderful way to connect to something greater than myself. I cherished(珍惜) the peace that it gave me.As I was walking back to our house one day, I heard something that gave me even more peace than my walk through the forest had. A window of our home was open and I could hear music playing on our old record player. Carried along on that stream of music was something I hardly ever heard, either: the lovely sound of my mother singing. My mom rarely sang unless she was alone. I guess she was shy about having others hear her. She would quietly join in on the hymns(赞美诗) at church but I could never make out her voice among all the others. This time, though I heard her singing sweetly and softly. I didn’t want her to stop so I walked softly up to the side of the house and sat under the open window. It was so beautiful. Her loving spirit seemed to flow through every word. I felt like I was a baby boy again, listening to her lullabies(摇篮曲) and feeling safe, warm and loved. As I think back on that day I am reminded of the story of a boy who was weeping sadly, because his pet bird, who had sung so beautifully and brought joy to the whole family, had died. His tears only stopped when a wise lady reminded him, “There are other worlds to sing in.” I know that one day in the world to come I will see Mom again and hear her sweet voice sing once more. Until then I will do my best to sing my own song here in this world.8. Which of the following was not a benefit of the walks through the forest for the author?A. They could clear his head.B. They could calm his spirit.C. They could make him cherish the peace in the world.D. They could connect him to something greater.9. The underlined phrases in the third paragraph can be replaced by “______”.A. tellB. rememberC. changeD. Record10.How did the author feel when he was sitting under the open window?A. Happy.B.
AHappy birthday! Do birthday really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the day when we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity(成熟)—or so we hope.We all like to imagine that we are getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the wonder of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process. But growing old? That is a different story.Growing old is not exactly for people in youth-oriented (以年轻人为中心)American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re young as you feel.”Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old.People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those who are young, or at least “young at heart”.Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden.Economically, “senior citizens” often try just to get by.Retirement at the age of 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income.Social security benefits usually cannot make up the difference.Older people may suffer from poor nutrition (营养), medical care, and housing. Some even have the experience of age discrimination(歧视). American sociologist(社会学家) Pat Moore once dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely--even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer.Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby boomers”(婴儿潮) are rapidly entering the group of the elderly.America may soonbe a place where wrinkles(皱纹)are “in”.Marketing experts are already noticing this growing group of consumers.1.Growing up is a wonderful thing because ________.A. people can celebrate their birthdays.B. people can become more and mature and wiser.C. people can receive many presents.D. people will feel younger at heart.2.We can infer from the second paragraph that _________.A. young people lack experience and wisdom.B. American older people often joke about their old age.C. American culture is very young.D. different countries have different opinions on the old age.3.The underlined sentence (in Paragraph 3) means “_________.”A. the golden years can make the old earn lots of money and receive good medical careB. the old people in America are probably leading a hard life without good nutrition, medical care or housing.C. the old in America have to retire at the age of 65.D. American social security benefits are not good.4.From the last paragraph we know that the underlined word “in” can be replaced by _______.A. seriousB. badC. disappearing slowlyD. growing fastBLast August,Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17year-old daughter,Maureen. With a checklist of criteria in hand, the Dallas family looked around the country visiting half a dozen schools. They sought a university that offered the teenager’s intended major, one located near a large city, and a campus where their daughter would be safe.“The safety issue is a big one.”says Joe Maho ney,who quickly discovered he wasn’t alone in his worries. On campus tours other parents voiced similar concerns, and the same question was always asked:What about crime? But when college officials always gave the same answer—“That’s not a problem here.”—Mahoney began to feel uneasy.“No crime whatsoever?” comments Mahoney today.“I just don’t buy it.” Nor should he:In 1999 the U.S.Department of Education had reports of nearly 400,000 serious crimes on or around our campuses.“Parents need to understandthat times have changed since they went to college,”says David Nichols, author of Creating a Safe Campus.“Campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation.”But getting accurate information isn’t easy.Colleges must report crime statistics(统计数字) by law,but some hold back for fear of bad publicity, leaving the honest ones looking dangerous.“The truth may not always be obvious,”warns S.Daniel Carter of Security on Campus,Inc.,the nation’s leading campus safety watchdog group. To help concerned parents,Carter promised to visit campuses and talk to experts around the country to find out major crime issues and effective solutions. 5.The underlined word “buy” in the third paragraph means ________.A.mind B.admit C.believe D.expect6.We learn from the text that “the honest ones” in the fourth paragraph most probably refers to colleges ________.A.that are protected by campus securityB.that report campus crimes by lawC.that are free from campus crimeD.that enjoy very good publicity7.What is the text mainly about?A.Exact campus crime statistics.B.Crimes on or around campuses.C.Effective solutions to campus crime.D.Concerns about kids’ campus safety.CLiquid Paper (修正液) was invented by Bette Nesmith Graham. She was 17 when she got a job at a Texas bank as a secretary, even though she didn’t know how to type. The company she worked for sent her to a secretary school, and she was typing in no time at all.The 1950s had seen the widespread use of the electric typewriter, which typed faster but also meant more mistakes. Also, mistakes made by early electric typewriters were very hard to erase, which caused problems for Bette. In order to make extra money she used her talent to paint holiday windows at the bank. Then one day, it suddenly occurred to her that she could create a paint to cover up type-writing mistakes. It worked! In 1956, Bette sold her first bottles of the new product, which she called “Mistake Out”. She made it in her kitchen, and her son Michael and his friends bottled it in the family garage.By 1957, she was selling 100 bottles a month and had gotten a patent (专利) for her product, which she now called “Liquid Paper.” Sales continued to grow, as more and more people heard about Liquid Paper, through word-of-mouth and by reading about it in magazines. In the 1960s, Bette bought a machine to help her produce Liquid Paper in large quantities. In 1971, she sold 2 million bottles. In 1979, she sold the company for 47.5 million dollars. She didn’t live to see the end of the contract (合同), dying in 1980, at the age of 56, in Texas.Bette’s invention continues to be used every day by secretaries and other people in the office and wherever typewriters are used.8.
