The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 meters of ash and pumice, and the long-forgotten site of the city was rediscovered in 1748 and has been excavated (挖掘) since that time. Around the end of the first century AD, a Roman writer called Pliny wrote about a terrible volcanic eruption that he had witnessed as a young man.
