Head
于是,旧金山分公司的经理就召开了一个职工会议,他对工作人员说:例句-1:I want to give you all a heads up that some big shots from New York will be here next Monday to see how we’re doing. So let’s make sure our desks are clean and that we show them what we’re do ing - we want to put on a good show for them.
I want to give you all a heads up. A-heads-up,在heads up前面有一个不定冠词a,所以很明显,heads up在这里是用做一个名词。

To bad-mouth. Bad
To bad-mouth
例句-1: I really get tired of hearing Sally bad-mouth her mother and father. She never says anything good about them, and yet I know they are good decentpeople who give her everything she wants.
2: You'll notice Bonnie's always whispering with someone in the office. She can't stop bad-mouthing other people. One thing Bonnie really enjoys is picking on others.
例句-1:I'm so glad that the week is almost over! I've had too much work to do. So I'm staying home and vegging this weekend. I won't do anything not even think about my deadline s next week.
例句-2:I've run around the office all day. I'm exhausted! A whole pot of coffee couldn't keep me awake. I'm going straight home to veg -- maybe watch a little television, then go to bed.
The shoe is on the other foot的意思是:形势已经完全不同了。下面这个例子就能够说明the shoe is on the other foot在日常会话中是怎么用的:
例句-1: "Back in school we made fun of Jones because we thought he spent too much time studying instead of having fun. Now the shoe is on the other foot -- he's made lots of money and the rest of us are just barely making enough to feed our families."
例句-4:"I am not sure if my wife wants me to go shopping with her on Sunday. If she decides to go with her sister instead, then I can play tennis with you. Let's just play it by ear."

Goodbye --
To kiss someone or something goodbye,
1: "Jones, when are you going to have that bid ready for the big airport construction contract? I "m telling you right now, if you don"t have our bid ready in time, you can kiss your job goodbye!"
”
例句-2: "I used to like that restaurant when the food was good and the price reasonable. But since it moved to the place close to where I live, the food has become lousy and the prices have gone so high. So I"ve decided to kiss it goodbye."
例句-3: "One candidate I won"t support is Joseph Blow. Sure, he may be a good speaker and all that, but he"s been involved in some shady business deals. Once the newspapers start digging that up, it would be the kiss of death for our whole list of candidates for the city council."
4: "Go talk to Dad for me please. You know Mom always goes along with Dad"s decisions. If she approaches Dad on my behalf that would be the kiss of death to my trip."
第一个是:to kiss someone or something goodbye,意思是“拒绝或放弃某人或某样东西”。
give me a hand
foot the bill
blow out
lock, stock and barrel
hook, line and sinker
比如,美国人经常说:“Give me a hand.”
Foot the bill.”
“Foot the bill.”
1:“We arrived two hours late a t the big blow-out for Charlie’s birthday because our
car had a blow-out.”
一个是“Lock, stock and barrel”,另外一个是:“Hook, line and sinker”。
Lock, stock and barrel和Hook, line and sinker都是全部的意思,可是用法却不同。
2:“Mr. Rockefeller bought the whole oil company lock, stock and barrel.”
Hook, line and sinker虽然也和lock, stock and barrel一样是全部的意思,可是它还带有受骗
例如:
例句-3:“I warned Sally not to believe that man's stories about how rich he was, but she swallowed them hook, line and sinker. After she married him, she found out that he owed
everyone in his office money.”
有些习惯用语从字面上看不出它们的确切意思,例如:give me a hand和foot the bill。
