My sister didn't join one, but a lot of her friends did.On that note, parties are apparently a huge part of college life in general. People are always going to frat parties, house parties, club events, and just generally staying out way later than they ever could in high school without parents around. My mom would never let me stay out past 9pm! But in college you can roam around doing whatever until the wee hours of the morning. Just part of being an "independent adult" I suppose.That kind of ties into the whole idea of college giving you way more freedom than high school. Sure, you have deadlines and classes you have to attend. But you're living on your own, making your own choices about what to do with your time, who to hang out with, what parties to go to, etc. No more parents telling you what to do and when to do it!Of course, that level of freedom also comes with a lot more responsibility than you had in high school. You have to pay for everything yourself - rent, food, books, activities, everything. You also have to do your own laundry, cleaning, cooking, and all that "adulting" stuff.
