定义航行或停泊于水域的运输或作业工具,按不同的使用要求而具有不同的技术性能,装备和结构型式。
构成船舶是由许多部分构成的.按各部分的作用和用途,可综合归纳为船体,船舶动力装置,船舶舾装等3大部分.船体：船体是船舶的基本部分,可分为主体部分和上层建筑部分.主体部分一般指上甲板以下的部分,它是由船壳(船底及船侧)和上甲板围成的具有特定形状的空心体,是保证船舶具有所需浮力,航海性能和船体强度的关键部分,一般用于布置动力装置,装载货物,储存燃油和淡水,以及布置其他各种舱室.为保障船体强度,提高船舶的抗沉性和布置各种舱室,通常设置若干强固的水密横舱壁(或同时包括纵舱壁)和内底,在主体内形成一定数量的水密舱,并根据需要加设中间甲板(一层或数层)或平台,将主体水平分隔成若干层. 上层建筑位于上甲板以上,由左,右侧壁,前,后端壁和各层甲板围成,其内部主要用于布置各种用途的舱室,如工作舱室,生活舱室,贮藏舱室,仪器设备舱室等.上层建筑的大小,层楼和型式因船舶用途和尺度而异,一般都设首楼,而上层建筑的主要部分则位于机(炉)舱区域之上.运输货物船舶的上层建筑长度较短,而客船和科学考察船的上层建筑则是很讲究的.船体结构大都用钢材,由板材和型材组合成板架结构.船舶动力装置船舶动力装置包括:推进装置——主机经减速装置,传动轴系以驱动推进器（螺旋桨是主要的型式);为推进装置的运行服务的辅助机械设备和系统,如燃油泵,滑油泵,冷却水水泵,加热器,过滤器,冷却器等;船舶电站(发电机,配电板等),它为船舶的甲板机械,机舱内的辅助机械和船上照明等提供电力;其他辅助机械和设备,如锅炉,压气机(和空气瓶),船舶各系统的泵,起重机械设备,维修机床等(它们并不全是为主机服务的).通常把主机(及锅炉)以外的机械统称为辅机.船舶舾装和其他装备：船舶舾装包括舱室内装结构(内壁,天花板,地板等),家具和生活设施(炊事,卫生等),涂装和油漆,门窗,梯和栏杆,桅杆,舱口盖等.船舶的其他装置和设备中,除推进装置外,还有:①锚设备与系泊设备;②舵设备与操舵装置;③救生设备(救生衣,救生筏,救生艇及其收放装置);④消防设备(探火和灭火设备与系统);⑤船内外通信设备(船内电话,无线电台);⑥照明设备;⑦信号设备(号灯,号旗等);⑧导航设备(雷达,各种定位仪,测探仪,计程仪等);⑨起货设备;⑩通风,空调和冷藏设备(食品库和冷藏货舱用); 海水和生活用淡水系统; 压载水系统; 液体舱的测深系统和透气系统; 舱底水疏干系统; 船舶电气设备,包括电缆,电气控制板(箱),蓄电池,变压器和变流机等.船舶设备中的照明,通信,信号,导航等设备也可归入电气设备; 其他特殊设备(依船舶的特殊需要而定).分类船舶分类方法很多,可按用途,航行状态,船体数目,推进动力,推进器等分类.按用途分类这种分类方法最常用,可分为军用和民用船舶两大类.军用船舶通常称为舰艇或军舰.其中,有直接作战能力或海域防护能力者称为战斗舰艇,如航空母舰,驱逐舰,护卫舰,导弹艇和潜艇,以及布雷,扫雷舰艇等,担负后勤保障者称为军用辅助舰艇.民用船舶指各种非军用船舶.某些小船习惯上也称为艇.民用船舶一般又分为运输船,工程船,渔船,港务船等.①运输船:用于港口之间的运输,如客船(包括渡船),货船,客货船.货船又按货物种类,运输方式和装卸方法分为:散件杂货船(统货或杂货船),集装箱船,滚装船(包括车辆渡船),散货船(多指谷物,煤,矿砂运输船),运木船,油船,液化天然气(和石油气)船,驳船,拖驳船队,顶推驳船队(分节驳)等.有的船舶能运载集装箱,矿砂,木材,谷物等多种货物,称为多用途船;有的专业船舶兼能运载石油,矿砂和其他粒状散货,称为兼用船.②工程船:如挖泥船,打桩船,起重船,打捞船,布缆船,疏浚船和炸礁船.③渔业船:如各类捕捞船(拖网渔船,围网渔船,刺网渔船,流网渔船,钓鱼船,蟹工船,捕鲸船和狩猎渔船),水产品加工船,水鲜冷藏运输船,渔政船等.④港务船:如港作拖船,引水船,航标船,港监船,供油船,供水船,消防船和交通船.⑤海难救助船.⑥海洋开发船:如海洋调查船,钻井船,多用途拖船和潜水器.按航行状态分类通常分为排水型船舶,滑行艇,水翼艇和气垫船.①排水型船舶:水面船舶航行时,重力全靠水的浮力来支承,绝大多数船舶属于此类.②滑行艇:高速航行时,仅部分艇底接触水面,重力大部分靠作用于艇底的动压力支承.③水翼艇:船体下装有水翼,高速航行时靠水翼的升力使船体部分或全部离开水面.④气垫船:靠向艇底不断输送高于大气压力的空气把艇体全部或部分升起,以降低水阻力而高速航行.气垫船又分全垫式和侧壁式两种.按船体数目分类分为单体船(绝大多数船舶属此类)和多体船.在多体船型中双体船较为多见.双体船具有二个相同的片体(成一定距离并列),在距水面一定高度处用连接桥连接成一体,多用作客船和车辆渡船,具有甲板面积大,装载地位多和稳性好的优点.为改善双体船的耐波性和快速性,又有一种小水线面船,片体自水面下一定高度起缩小为流线型,狭窄柱体伸出水面与连接桥相接.按推进动力分类：可分为机动船和非机动船.机动船按推进主机的类型又分为蒸汽机船(活塞式,现已淘汰),(蒸)汽轮机船,柴油机船,燃气轮机船,联合动力装置船,电力推进船,核动力船等.按推进器分类有螺旋桨船(主要型式),喷水推进船,喷气推进船,明轮船,平旋轮船等.空气螺旋桨只用于少数气垫船.按推进器数目还可分为单桨船,双桨船,三桨船等.按机舱部位分类有尾机型船(机舱在船的尾部),中机型船和中尾机型船.按主体连续甲板的层数分类有单甲板船,双甲板船,三甲板船等.按船体结构材料分类有钢船,铝合金船,木船,钢丝网水泥船,玻璃钢艇,橡皮艇,混合结构船等.主要技术特征船舶的主要技术特征有船舶排水量,船舶主尺度,船体系数,舱容和登记吨位,船体型线图,船舶总布置图,船体结构图,主要技术装备的规格等.船舶吃水、吨位和标志吃水船舶吃水：水线面与船底基平面之间的垂直距离（自平板龙骨上缘量至水面的垂直距离。
