Barbara McClintock was born in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her family moved to the Brooklyn area of New York City in 1908. Barbara was an active child with interests in sports and music. She also developed an interest in science. She studied science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Barbara was among a small number of undergraduate students to receive training in genetics in 1921. Years later, she noted that few college students wanted to study genetics.Barbara McClintock decided to study botany, the scientific study of plants, at Cornell University. She completed her undergraduate studies in 1923. McClintock decided to continue her education at Cornell. She completed the maste r’s degree in 1925. Two years later, she finished all her requirements for the doctorate degree.McClintock stayed at Cornell after she completed her educatio n. She taught students botany. The 1930s was not a good time to be a young scientist in the United States. The country was in the middle of the great economic depressio n. Millions of Americans were unemployed. Male scientists were offered jobs. But female geneticists were not much in demand. An old friend from Cornell, Marcus Rhoades, invited McClintock to spend the summer of 1941 working at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. It is a research center on Long Island, near New York City. McClintock started a temporary job with the genetics department. A short time later, she accepted a perpetual position in the laboratory and got continual incomes. This gave her the freedom to continue her research without repeatedly asking for financial aid.By the 1970s, her discoveries had had an effect on everything from genetic engineering to cancer research. McClintock won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of the ability of genes to change positions on chromosomes. She was the first American woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize.【解题导语】本文主要叙述了有名女科学家Barbara McClintock的经受以及她在基因和染色体争辩方面取得的重大成就。

阅读提速练Ⅰ阅读理解A(2017·浙江卷10月)There are energy savings to be made from all recyclable materials, sometimes huge savings. Recycling plastics and aluminum, for instance, uses only 5% to 10% as much energy as producing new plastic or smelting(提炼) aluminum.Long before most of us even noticed what we now call “the environment,”Buckminster Fuller said, “Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to be left around because we’ve been ignorant of their value.” T o take one example, let’s compare the throwaway economy with a recycling economy as we feed a cat for life.Say your cat weight 5kg and eats one can of food each day. Each empty can of its food weighs 40g. In a throwaway economy, you would throw away 5,475 cans over the cat’s 15year lifetime. That’s 219kg of steel—more than a fifth of a ton and more than 40 times the cat’s weight. In a recycling economy, we would make one set of 100 cans to start with, then replace them over and over again with recycled cans. Since almost 3% of the metal is lost during reprocessing, we’d have to make an extra 10 cans each year. But in all, only 150 cans will be used up over the cat’s lifetime—and we’ll still have 100 left over for the next cat.Instead of using up 219kg of steel, we’ve used only 6kg. And because the process of recycling steel is less polluting than making new steel, we’ve also achieved the following significant savings: in energy use—47% to 74%; in air pollution—85%; in water pollution—35%; in water use—40%.【解题导语】本文首段点明主旨:回收利用可大大节约资源,并引用伟大建筑师富勒的话和养猫喂食的例子肯定循环经济的价值所在。

Unit 1 Great scientistsⅠ阅读理解A(2017·浙江卷10月)It’s surprising how much simple movements of the body canaffect the way we think. Using expansive gestures with open arms makes us feel more powerful, crossing your arms makes you more determined and lying down can bring more insights(领悟).So if moving the body can have these effects, what about the clothes we wear? We’re all well aware of how dressing up in different ways can make us feel moreattractive, sporty or professional, depending on the clothes we wear, but can theclothes actually change cognitive(认知的) performance or is it just a feeling?Adam a nd Galinsky tested the effect of simply wearing a white lab coat on people’s powers of attention. The idea is that white coats are associated with scientists, who are in turn thought to have close attention to detail. What they found was that people wearing white coats performed better than those who weren’t. Indeed, they made only half as many errors as those wearing their own clothes on the Stroop Test(one way of measuring attention). The researchers callthe effect “enclothed cognition,” suggesting that all manner of differentclothes probably affect our cognition in many different ways. This opens the way for all sorts of clothes-based experiments. Is the writerwho wears a fedora more creative? Is the psychologist wearing little round glasses and smoking a cigar more insightful? Does a chef’s hat make the resultant food taste better? From now on I will only be editing articles for PsyBlog while wearing a whitecoat to help keep the typing error count low. Hopefully you will be doing your part by reading PsyBlog in a cap and gown(学位服).【解题导语】本文讲述了Adam和Galinsky所做的一个关于穿着白大褂人们注意力的实验。

Unit 1 Caltural relicsⅠ阅读理解A“Hungary?”I looked at my school headmaster in confusion.“I never mentioned wanting to go to Hungary.”And with that,my adventure started. My name is Jonathan Diamond and I just finished an amazing school exchange year in Hungary.Going on an exchange had always been my dream. When my high school offered an allyear program,I jumped at the opportunity. It would pay for almost everything and all I had to do was buy a plane ticket.I knew where I wanted to go:Spain, the country of dancers wearing flowing red dresses. So when I heard that I was going to Hungary,I was pretty shocked. But I decided to make the best of it,since it was, after all,a onceinalifetime opportunity. Before I knew it,I was on the airplane, leaving for Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport,Hungary.I had difficult times when I almost gave up.Hungarian is the hardest language on the planet.Cultural differences occasionally embarrassed both my peers and me.I had to give up eating carrots,my beautiful favorite, for Hungarians think carrots are rubbish in their country. The change in the landscape was amazing, looking nothing like skyscrapers, bullet trains, cars, and people in tiny houses that I had been accustomed to.Gradually,I fell in love with the relaxing lifestyle, the warmhearted people, and getting home at 2:30 p.m.at the latest from school. And I was sad to leave on my very last day.Having the host family who took me as one of their own members was the best thing I’ve ever experienced. From my little sisters,I learned how to embrace life to its fullest. From my brothers I learned that it’s OK for a boy to run around the house. From my host parents I learned to stay positive,to smile and that when you pick the right people and take their hands, suddenly, you become friends.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述作者作为一个交换生在国外学习的经历和感受。
