意思是，我们高高兴兴地把它填进肚子里，结果它不能发挥应有的营养作用，比如说，要钙没钙，要钾没钾，维生素少得可怜。可是它们又占据了我们的胃，其他有用的食品必然就吃得少了，最终就会导致人们营养缺乏，妨碍健康。
(2)容易让人不知不觉中发胖----
意思是，虽然这些食品营养素含量比较低，促进人体发胖的成分却很高。比如说，高脂肪，高糖，大量淀粉，而且吃起来还不容易觉得饱，所谓“好吃你就多吃点“。多吃的结果呢？当然人就容易胖。
(3)不利于预防慢性病----
总是吃大量糖和精制淀粉，血糖上升特快，容易促进人体衰老，也不利于预防糖尿病。总是吃油脂特别多的食品，特别是油炸食品和香酥食品，容易发生血脂异常。再说了，油、糖和精制淀粉都促进发胖，而人一胖，各种慢性病自然就接踵而来。
国外有个词汇叫做“空能量食品”(empty energy)，和“垃圾食品”的意思比较接近。意思是说，这种食品让人长胖的效率挺高，可惜其他营养素都特别少，既没有什么蛋白质，也没有什么维生素，钙呀铁呀一律都微乎其微……结果就是让人虚胖。这种东西用来养猪养鸡都不行----肥肉多，瘦肉少，爱得病，养人恐怕就更差了点。
这里，我们再看看坎贝尔是怎样说的。他虽然没有提出“垃圾食品”的概念。但是，他却指出了营养（饮食）与健康的密切关系。坎贝尔在《中国健康调查报告》的第三部分<良好的营养指导>中有这样几段话，对我们很有启发教育作用：
△我们的身体已经形成了一个无比复杂的反应体系，能够从摄入的纯天然食物中获取最大的益处。
△如果我们希望充分地享受美食，最重要的就是，不要想得太多，简单一些。
毫无疑问，要想身体健康，必须拒绝垃圾食品。人人都应该有如此清醒的认识和坚决、果断的态度。
