AYou might not expect it, but cows are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Cows produce lots of methane by breaking down the grass, Now scientists have shown that the pollution from cows canbe reduced by adding a little seaweed to their food.Scientists first discovered that seaweed could help control methane from cows several years ago. But this work was done in a laboratory, there were many questions about whether the idea could work in real life.In the lab studies, the cows were given quite a bit of seaweed, and they would cause losing weight. That wasn't helpful, since cows are often sold by weight. It also wasn't clear if the seaweed would stop working if it was used for a longer period of time. Now, scientists from the University of California, Davis have answered several of these questions. The researchers studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood, which allowed the scientists to measure the methane that the cows were giving off. This time, they used a much smaller amount of seaweed, which they mixed with the cows' food. The results were surprisingly good. In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given, but even the worst-polluting cows produced 33% less methane.Over the five months, the scientists didn't see any signs that the cows' stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again.Another surprise came when they looked at the weight of the cows. The cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows, but they didn't need as much food. But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there's notadequateseaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed.A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in fields, where they eat the grass. That means there's no chance to feed them seaweed every day. These problems need to be taken seriously if the world is going to avoid the worst effects of the climate crisis.Still, it's true that something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis.1. Why did the scientists do the experiment on the farm?A. To control the amount of seaweed.B. To record the weight cows gained.C. To confirm the effect of seaweed in real life.D. To measure the amount of seaweed cows ale.2. The underlined word “adequate” means ________ .A. commonB. specialC. lackingD. enough3. The passage is written to ________ .A. appeal to people not to raise the cowsB. encourage people to plant the seaweedC. remind people of controlling cows' weightD. call on people to take actions to reduce the pollutionBA world in which extinct creatures could be brought back to life came a step closer yesterday. Australian scientists have managed to extract a gene from a preserved sample of a Tasmanian tiger and make it active. Thebreakthroughhas left them dreaming that one day they will be able to recreate the animal, which died out more than 70 years ago. And if it can be done with the Tasmanian tiger, it may also be possible to resurrect (复活) creatures that have been extinct for far longer.“There used to be a time when extinction meant forever, but no more, ” said Professor Mike Archer. “We are now able to seriously challenge whether those animals that have gone for ever. What has been achieved is a very important step in bringing back those animals that are extinct. And while I think that technically it is still pretty difficult at the moment, we can now see the possibilities. I’m personally convinced that the Tasmanian tiger will be brought back to life in my lifetime.”The breakthrough came after nine years of experiments by scientists at the University of Melbourne, who extracted a gene from one of several tigers preserved in alcohol in a Melbourne museum. They removed the equivalent gene from a mouse embryo implanted the tiger gene and then watched as the mouse continued to grow normally, suggesting the tiger gene had been activated.Team leader Dr. Andrew Pask said it was the first time DNA from an extinct species had been used to “induce (引起) a functional response in another living organism”.However, the animal’s entire gene structure would have to be revived in the same way to even begin the possibility of bringing the Tasmanian tiger back from the dead.Mick Mooney, a wildlife officer ofthe Tasmanian Government, was worried that such developments could encourage people’s indifference to the protection of endangered species.“If people think that we can bring animals back to life after they’ve gone, they will start saying that there is nothing to worry about because we can fix it up later.”4. What does the underlined word “breakthrough” in the l paragraph refer to?A. Scientists have recreated new animals.B. Scientists have resurrected endangered animal.C. It has turned out that some creatures would not go extinct.D. A tiger gene has been extracted successfully and activated.5. Scientists are carrying out the experiments in order to ________.A. bring extinct animals back to lifeB. transplant the genes of tigers into other animalsC. find out what factors lead to the animals’ extinctionD. find a new way to extract animals’ DNA6. Mike Archer thinks that ________.A. scientists now have no technological difficulty reconnecting extinct animalsB. it’ll be a century or so before a Tasmanian tiger walks on the earth againC. humans have come closer in reconnecting extinct animalsD. reconnecting extinct animals is impossible7. We can learn from Mick Mooncy’s words that_________.A. he thought it unnecessary to worry about endangered animalsB. his opinion is in contrast with that of the Tasmanian GovernmentC. he thought people should be encouraged to protect endangered animalsD. he is concerned that bringing extinct animals back to life may have a negative effectCGray wolves have lived inNorth Americafor at least half a million years. Their living areas once included most of the continentalUnited States. But during the 1800s and early 1900s, wolves were hunted to near extinction(灭绝).By the 1960s, theU. S.wolf population was limited to a handful of creatures in small comers of the northernMidwest. Then, in 1973, a law, the ESA, was passed to protect animals from becoming extinct. Gray wolves were one ofthe first animals placed on the endangered-species(濒危物种)list. Killing them wasillicit. And theU. ernment worked to promote their protection. In a famous example of this effort, starting in 1995, 31 wolves were moved fromCanadatoYellowstoneNational Park. By 2015, more than 500 gray wolves were living in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem(生态系统).Today, the continentalU. S.is home to more than 6,000 gray wolves. On January 4, 2021, theU. ernment removed gray wolves from the endangered-species list.Usually, an animal's removal would be cause for celebration. But some environmental protectors say the wolves still need protection. In some parts of the country, wolves are increasing in numbers. More than a thousand of them can be found just inMichiganandWisconsin. But overall, their range is still a small part of what it was. Wolves used to live across most of the U. S. Now they , are found in fewer than a dozen states. Others argue that as long as a species is not in danger of extinction, it doesn't belong on the endangered-species list. And farmers with land near wolf living areas say that if the wolf's population continues to grow, more of their farm animals will be killed by wolves. But some protection groups worry that without protection, the wolf population will crash again. They hope that no matter what, people and wolves can get along peacefully with each other. They are promoting ways to make that happen.8. What caused gray wolves to be almost extinct?A. Losing their living areas.B. Too many natural enemies.C. The extreme climate changes.D. Being hunted in great numbers.9. What does the underlined word "illicit" in paragraph 2 mean?A. Rather difficult.B. Against the law.C. Totally normal.D. Conditionally allowable.10. Why was the gray wolf removed from the endangered-species list?A. They have a much larger population already.B. They have all been put into the safe natural parks.C. They have been feeding on farmers, farm animals.D. They have grown too strong to be protected by humans.11. What do farmers living near gray wolves' living areas think of the animals?A. The wolves are trouble for them.B. The wolves must be better protected.C. The wolves get along peacefully with them.D. The wolves should live where they belong.DAge has never been a problem for 16-year-old Thessalonika Arzu-Embry. Olive herself was expecting a baby very soon. The darkness in the barn made Olive nervous and she stood at the door, not sure what to do. Then she saw a light at the far end and called out to Nate. Nate held his lantern high as he came up to Olive and said, "You shouldn't have come out when it's so cold.""I brought you some hot coffee," Olive kept looking into the darkness of the barn to see where Maudie was."I don't want you to stay," Nate said."Oh, no, Nate, I don't want to leave. If it begins to happen, I'11 go back to the house."He helped Olive sit down in a chair and told her again that he did not want her to stay when their cow Maudie's calf came. It wasn't something a young wife should see, especially a young wife who would soon be a mother herself. The cow lay quietly. The husband and wife did not say much as they waited; words did not seem to come easily to them.Time seemed to be moving too slowly for Olive. She looked nervously at the cow. Then Nate began to rub the cow's head, but the cow turned its head away from his hands and then suddenly it came. Olive could see it clearly--- part of the head of the young calf slowly, painfully coming out.But Nate saw that the cow was in trouble. He looked for a nail(钉子) on the wall where he could hang his lamp. There was none. Olive said he should have asked a neighbor to help him. Suddenly, Olive saw that Nate was also afraid---fearful that the cow's struggle would be too much for him alone. And at that moment she deci ded that nothing could drive her out of the barn. The emergency changed Olive. She no longer felt fearful. There was a sudden new strength in her.Nate told her not to look, but she had to look. As she watched, Olive was afraid, but not of the cow or even herself. She was fearful of the calf. At last, it was done.Olive and Nate were both tired. Olive remembered the coffee she had brought to the barn, She put it on the hot stove. Nate dried the calf with a cloth. As he worked, Olive looked through the barn window. She saw the apple trees with snow on them, the light in her kitchen and the beauty of the morning sun.36. Nate didn't want Olive to stay in the barn because______.A. it was too cold in the barnB. We naturally look up to the stars we want to sound like when we’re young and just experimentin g with singing. But as we get older, we find that we have our own voice. In my opinion, you can only be a superstar if you find your own voice. If you want to sound great and attract people, just get comfortable with your own voice. Do you think Bob Dylan has a great voice? Of course not, but people love his voice and his songs. One of the main reasons is that he’s very comfortable with himself and his own voice. So remember this when you’re asking yourself how to sing like a superstar.I hate hearing many singers trying to imitate other singers! But it still happens all the time and yes, some of them do become famous by trying to sound like others. I just don’t feel like I’m listening to real art when I hear these so-called stars trying to imitate someone else with their voice. Now one thing I like to do is to sing other people’s songs in my own vo ice. Yes, you can practice a great song by an artist you love while you’re driving down the road, but practice it in your own voice not his or her voice. Turn down the volume a little and hear your own natural voice singing the song and giving it a new flavor! That’s exciting and you’re being true to yourself. We’re supposed to be artists and that means expressing ourselves in a unique way. So if yo u’re asking how to sing like a superstar, remember to just use your own voice.40. If you go shopping for food before lunchtime, you’ll probably buy more than you plan to. Unfortunately, however, just this advice isn’t enough for consumers these days. Modern shoppers need an educa tion in how and how not to buy things at the store. First, you check the weekly newspaper ads. Find out the items that are on sale and decide if you really need these things. In other words, don’t buy anything just because it’s cheaper than usual! “New and Improved!” or “All Natural” on the front of a package influence you. Instead, read the list of ingredients (contents) on the back. Third, compare prices:that is, you should examine the prices of both different brands and different sizes of the same brand.Another suggestion for consumers is to buy ordinary items instead of famous brands. Ordinary items in supermarkets come in plain(普通的)packages. These products are cheaper because producers don’t spend much money on packing or advertising. The quality, howe ver, is usually as good as the quality of well-known name brands. In the same way, in buying clothes, you can often find high quality and low prices in brands that are not famous. Shopping in discount clothing stores can help you save a lot of money. Altho ugh these stores aren’t veryattractive, and they usually do not have individual dressing rooms, not only are the prices low, but you can often find the same famous brands that you find in high-priced department stores.Wise consumers read magazine ads and watch TV commercials, but they do this with one advantage:knowledge of the psychology (心理) behind the ads. In other words, well-informed consumers watch for information and check for misinformation. They ask themselves questions:Is the advertiser hiding something in small print at the bottom of the page? Is there any real information in the commercial, or is the advertiser simply showing an attractive image? With the answers to these questions, consumers can make a wise choice.48. To be human is to think. But thinking may come naturally wit hout your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical(批判性的)thinking. When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes(过程). Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education. The word "critical" here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen—beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning (错误的推理).Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker; if you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today's world, fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence, you may learn something new from a story about AlbertEinstein. The first time Banish Hoffman, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein, Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffman at ease by saying, "Please go slowly, I don't understand things quickly."52.Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically,_______.A. it will be hard for us to think naturally and fastB. we will follow the ideas of others naturallyC. we might be controlled by other people's ideasD. we might be fooled by other people's ideas53. If you are a critical thinker, you will________.A. criticize other people for their mistakesB. trust the reports in the newspapersC. take one view against another viewD. think deeply about different ideas54. In the last paragraph, "something new" suggests that________.A. the smarter you are, the faster you do thingsB. intelligence is not decided by speedC. sp eed can improve intelligenceD. the faster you do things, the smarter you become55. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Understanding Critical ThinkingB. Thinking and Critical ThinkingC. Thinking Natural and HumanD. Thinking Fast Means IntelligenceIV.根据所提供语境,用方框中所给短语的适当形式填空。
