With the help of new medicine, we human beings can live longer. Death will come mainly from accidents, murder and war. Today‟s leading killers, such as heart disease, cancer, and aging itself, will become distant memories. In discussion of technological changes, the Internet gets most of the attention these days. But the change in medicine can be the real technological event of our tomes. How long can humans live? Human brains were known to decide the final death. But the upper limits will be broken by new medicine. Sometime between 2050 and 2100, medicine will have advanced to the point where people will be able to take medicine to repair their organs every 10 years or so. The medicine, made up ofthe basic building materials of life, will build new brain cells, heart cells, and so on----in much the same way our bodies make new skin cells to take the place of old ones.It is exciting to imagine that the advance in technology may be changing the most basic condition of human existence, but there are many technical problems which still must be cleared up (解决)on the way to this wonderful future.16.According to the passage, human death is now mainly caused by .A.Diseases and agingB. heart disease and warC.accidents and agingD. accidents and war17.In the author‟s opinion, today‟s most important advance in technology lies in _______.A.MedicineB. the InternetC. brain cellsD. human organs18.Humans may live longer in the future because___________.A.Heart disease will far away from usB.human brains can decide the final deathC.the basic materials of cells will last foreverD.human organs can be repaired by new medicine19.How long can humans live in the future according to the passage?A.Over 100 years.B. Havre de Grace
Years ago, Americans used decoys (假肢) to hunt ducks and other waterbirds. Those days are gone. But collecting artful decoys is now popular. Havre de Grace is a town in the America state of Maryland, one part of which is famous for its wildlife. Captain Jobes is one of the top decoy cravers in Havre de Grace. Hunters use decoys to get ducks and geese to come close enough to shoot. The wooden birds are so highly respected here that Havre de Grace calls itself the decoy capital of the world. It also has a museum with more than 1,000 decoys. Most were hand made.

Children who showed early signs of self-control were not only less likely to have developed addictions or to have committed a crime by adulthood, but were also healthier and 5.than their more impulsive peers. For the new study, called the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, researchers led by Duke University psychologist Terrie Moffitt followed 1,000 children in New Zealand for more than three decades. In previous research, researchers found that 6.and out-of-control behavior were more common in children who had experienced loss or violence. If children have bad experiences, the 7.may affect the proper development of the frontal cortex (前额叶) in children’s brains, which is responsible for self-control.If children have lower self-control, they will have a(n) 8.time in school. They won’t learn as efficiently and they are more likely to act out because of their frustrations, which means the potential for more 9.problems and, in later life, the potential for legal problems.Although Moffitt’s study found some “concentration of low self-control children in homes with low income,” the author says, “The link was 10 .There were plenty of well-to-do children with very low self-control.”11 , poor children who scored best on measures of self-control were more likely than others to become wealthy in later life.“One 12 of the findings is that children with high self-control who began life in low-incomehomes ended up as adults with higher incomes,” says Moffitt.13 , the period of time in which many of the mistakes in self-discipline would potentially lead to the worst life outcomes occurred during the teenage years.Teens who had scored lowest in measures of 14 in early childhood were the most likely to make mistakes in the first place. And even those low self-control teens who managed to 15 smoking, alcohol or other drug-related problems, and who stayed in school, still did worse later in life than their more disciplined peers. This suggests that there might be a better 16 on investment from early childhood interventions.“Trial and error is a 17 part of teenage life”,says Moffitt, “But teens with good self-control 18 trial and error more strategically, and they understand the difference between a useful learning experiment and real danger.I am convinced that teenagers can be taught to recognize this 19 .”5.A.prettier B.wealthier C.cleverer D.freer6.A.impulsiveness B.interruption C.miscomprehension D.addiction7.A.anger B.environment C.confusion D.misery8.A.unexpected B.hard C.important D.happy9.A.cultural B.financial C.physical D.social10A.strong B.stable C.weak D.flexible11A.For example B.Without doubt C.After all D.In fact12A.interpretation B.precondition C.outcome D.significance13A.Fortunately B.Contrarily C.Unsurprisingly D.Doubtfully14A.self-education B.self-control C.self-deception D.self-negation15A.forget B.miss C.ban D.avoid16A.effect B.expectation C.restriction D.return17A.rare B.spiritual C.healthy D.feasible18A.look for B.engage in C.go over D.apply to19A.ambition B.distinction C.evolution D.suggestion三、阅读理解Police officer Jody Thompson first met his son John in 2015. He was pulling into the car park at the Poteau Police Department in Oklahoma when he overheard a call about a case of physical child abuse.Despite being off duty, Thompson responded to the call.He arrived at the scene to find a severely underweight boy, who was covered in bruises (淤青) with his wrists tied. The eight-year-old, who weighed just over 25 kilograms at the time, had been left in a dustbin full of cold water.“He didn’t have a spot on his body that didn’t have a bruise. It was the worst thing I’d ever seen,” Thompson said.Thompson drove John to hospital and sat by his side all night as the child recovered in the intensive care unit. The following day, he contacted the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) to request he become the child’s foster parent.Within just a few days, Thompson had brought John into the safety of his own home.“When I’d seen him in that house shivering and his hands tied — just wet to the skin and confused — I knew at that moment, the only time I would be satisfied and sure that he was safe was if he was with me,” he said.Thompson already had two sons, aged 15 and 18.He didn’t tell his family about his plan at first, but said they had faith he was doing the right thing. In an extraordinary twist, just two days after bringing John into the family home, he found out his wife was pregnant with their third biological son.And seven months later, DHS called the Thompsons to ask if they wanted to foster John’s newborn sister, Paizly, who was born in prison. They picked her up the next day — when she was just a day old — and brought her straight home. Both John and Paizly were later adopted by Thompson and his wife.‘The example of love that Thompson has shown to this young man and his sister is an exa mple everyone should follow,” Poteau Police Chief Stephen Fruen said in a statement.“It’s men like Thompson that make me proud of our police force brothers and sisters.I am proud to serve with him.”25.When Thompson found him, John was________.A.seriously ill B.badly injured C.unconscious D.overweight26.The reason that Thompson decided to bring John back home was that________.A.he wanted to give John a safe home B.he thought that John was smartC.he was requested to do so by DHS D.he wanted to find a companion for his sons27.The underlined word “twist” in the sixth paragraph most probably means________.A.a bend in a river or roadB.a completely crazy situationC.something that is bent into a particular shapeD.an unexpected change in the situation28.What can we infer from what Poteau Police Chief Stephen Fruen said in the last paragraph of the article?A.It wasn’t the first time for Thompson to adopt a child.B.John was born in prison like his sister.C.Fruen showed great respect to Thompson.D.Thompson regretted bringing John home.●Anne of Green Gables (1985)Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel Anne of Green Gables, previously filmed in 1934, was afforded a TV-movie treatment in 1985.Anne Shirley is an orphan girl sent to live with a foster family on Cana da’s Prince Edward Island.Though she has great difficulty controlling her temper and vivid imagination, Anne eventually wins over her new guardians, bossy Marilla Cuthbert and Mailla’s shy brother Mathew.Anne’s journey is a happy one, but starts out difficult like those of many children adopted at an older age.●Martian Child (2007)Martian Child tells the story of a widower, David, and his continuation of the adoption process he had started before his wife’s death. His new son, Dennis, believes that he is a Martian.David must contend with this belief and gain access into Dennis’s world. Both characters are born outsiders and they recognize their common sense of loss.Martian Child is a wonderful story for any adopted child, especially those who have created their own origin story to cope with the absence of their birth family.●Despicable Me (2010)Despicable Me is championed for showing kids how much their presence impacts the lives of their adoptive parents.Gru is a super-bad guy until he meets orphans Margo, Edith and Agnes. They overturned his life and his evil plans as they work to warm his heart and home.Despicable Me is a funny kid movie on the surface, but truly has a lot to say about the love of a child and the effect of that love on their new parents and home.●Annie (2014)In this remake of one of the most-beloved adoption stories, Annie’s positive attitude shines in the midst of incompetent social workers and greedy foster parents. The songs are cheerful and catchy and the film is happy. While this film could be very challenging for children who have experienced destructive placements, it is generally family-friendly.It also gets points for allowing Annie to exemplify several of the strengths of foster kids: hopeful, brave, tough and smart.29.The films all deal with the theme of________.A.family conflict B.parenting C.adoption D.child care30.Which films are successful remakes of the originals?A.Annie & Despicable Me There is still plenty of room for more words in these great vocabulary authorities. New words are continually being created and added to our language. And many of today’s word experts can credit a famous mathematician with the creation of the method by which they develop many new words. The mathematician was an Englishman named Charles L.Dodgson. In addition to working with figures, Dodgson wrote books. His imaginative stories and poems have made Dodgson beloved to generartions of readers. We know him, however, not by the name of Dodgson but by his pen name, Lewis Carroll.Lewis Carroll has delighted countless readers, young and old, with Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and numerous poems. In these works, Carroll developed dozens of nonsensical words such as “chortle”and “galumph”. Many of these words are combined naturally with more common words in the English language. Carroll referred to his made-up words as “portmanteau” words, named after a kind of leather suitcase that opens into two compartments. The name was well suited, because most of Carroll’s words had two compartments. Rather than being entirel y fabricated(虚构), they were usually made from the combined parts of two different words. A “snark”, for example, clearly came from a snake and a shark.Although Carroll died long ago, his technique continues to be used today. We clearly see his influence in such words as smog, brunch, and guesstimate.21.What does the underlined sentence probably mean according to the passage?A.Dictionaries are open to the public.B.Dictionaries are helpful to the public.C.Dictionaries are ready to welcome new words.D.The vocabularies in dictionaries are limited.22.Dodgson’s made-up words__________.A.are based on different wordsB.Are borrowed from other languagesC.All come from his poemsD.Are still widely used23.This passage is mainly about ________.A.how Dodgson wrote his worksB.how English words are createdC.how a dictionary is writtenD.how Dodgson created new wordsBA snake handler who cheated(逃脱) dead after being badly bitten by a snake is now teaching Australians how to survive in that case. He can’t quit put his finger on it. That’s because the entire fo refinger on his right hand was cut off after he was bitten. But that wasn’t his worst experience. When he was 18, a Brown Snake he’d been holding by the tail turned and bit him in the face he was rushed to hospital, and he was saved from death. He says a Cobra Snake is perhaps the most dangerous but not the most poisonous.A Black Mamba Snake, one of the most deadly, is the longest poisonous snake in the world. A Brown Snake is the final guest at Neville’s show. It’s one of the most common snakes in Australia, and is the second most poisonous in the world. Several times during the show it bites the bag, which Neville waves in front of.Neville’s advice is to stay still if a snake is nearby, as most will only attack if they feel in danger.
