It goes without saying that this picture aims at revealing a current problem: what kind of attitude we will choose when facing difficulties and challenges. In this drawing, a football-player is prepared to kick a ball towards the net, where a goal-keeper keeps guard. However, in the player’s mind, the keeper becomes a giant covering the net completely, while the latter imagines that he turns out to be a dwarf standing below the huge net.

Obviously, both of them lack courage and confidence in front of challenges. These two players represent those who often choose to magnify their enemies and dangers, and lose their confidence to fight against them. As a result, what they can achieve in the end is nothing but failure. This sad situation can be best illustrated in the fact that some people lose their chance of success in the entrance examination for the MA program. When preparing for the exam, they often feel depressed thinking that they are never well-prepared. In fact, they will soon realize that it is not as difficult as they thought before. In a word, they suffer from underestimating their abilities.

In our life, what we need most is self-insurance and a proper view of challenges before us. Therefore, we should bear in mind that

our competitors may not be as terrible as expected, and our

painstaking efforts will pay off as long as we arm ourselves with

courage and confidence. Only in this way can we overcome any

This photo does reflect a thought-provoking social phenomenon which is not uncommon in China now. The young always give up because the problem is beyond their ability to cope with. Superficially, it seems to be somewhat reasonable, but when weighing in the mind, we find there is an apparent tendency underlying this phenomenon: the lack of confidence. Firstly, it is well-known that we exist in a dynamic world with various difficulties. We can do nothing but face them. Secondly, attitude is the key point to take the first step. Assume bravery and confidence to solve the problem, you will find the question is not as “huge” as you imagine. Take us for example, the entrance exam for graduate students even seems to a horrible monster before us. Some people give up, some persist. In the picture presented to us, there is a boy running on annular tracks and reaching the finishing line. Heavily sweating as he is, a happy smile hangs on his lips. However, as an arrow marked “End” points on the finishing line, there occurs another arrow marked with “Beginning”.

Though this picture only describes a runner who is going to start a new run after reaching the finishing line, yet it demonstrates a universal law that governs the development of mankind. In other words, if we want to make constant progress we must keep forging ahead instead of resting on laurels. Robertson once said, “Whenever he is satisfied with what he does, he has reached his culminating point—he will progress no more.”

This reminds me of Picasso, whose works greatly influenced the path of 20th century art. But what has impressed me most is not the notable success he has

achieved but his enterprising spirit. Besides “the greatest artist of the 20th century”, he is acclaimed as “the youngest artist in the world” because he unremittingly pursued and explored new styles of painting all his life.
