1978年，24岁的李安赴美国伊利诺大学戏剧系导演专业就读，毕业后进入纽约大学攻读电影制作硕士学位。
李安在纽约大学学习期间开始进行电影艺术实践，拍摄了《追打》(“The Runner”)、《我爱中国菜》(“I love Chinese Food”)和《棒艺术家》(“Best The Artist”)。

The Wedding Banquet (1993),
which won the Golden Bear in the Berlin Film Festival and was nominated as the Best Foreign Language Film in both the Golden Globe and the Academy Awards. In all, this film collected eleven Taiwanese and international awards and made Lee a rising star.
Ang Lee is a Taiwanese American film director.He has directed serveral films such as Eat Drink Man Woman(1994),Sense and Sensibility (1995), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Hulk (2003), Brokeback Mountain (2005), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Director, and Lust, Caution.
Eat Drink Man Womraditional values, modern relationships, and family conflicts in Taipei. The film was once again a box office hit and was critically acclaimed.
This situation, usually an embarrassment in Chinese culture, put enormous pressure on the couple, but with Lin's support and understanding, Lee didn't abandon his career in films but continued to generate new ideas from movies and performances. He also wrote several screenplays during this time.
Brokeback Mountain is the story of ranch hand Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and cowboy Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), two men who fall in love on the fictional Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming in 1963. The film documents their relationship over the next twenty years.
