I stopped to catch my breath as a wave of dizziness swept over me in the thin mountain air. I was on an amazing trip with my family to experience the festival of Qoyllur Riti, which takes place at 4,300 meters high in the southern Andes of Peru.As I looked back down the trail we had climbed, and up towards where we had to go, the colorful sight struck me a lot. Entire families wearing local costumes were travelling to this unique festival from all over Peru. Among them were old men, mothers with small babies and children all following the same route. Many of them had horses and donkeys carry their food, blankets, cooking pots and tents. Others had made their way on foot through the mountains for days to attend this remarkable event. We continued climbing upward for another hour and a half before reaching the Sinakara Valley. Right across this flat piece of ground people were putting up shelters and tents to protect themselves from the freezing mist and rain. It was clear, however, from the sound of the drums and singing rising from the campsite that the weather was not going to weaken the festival spirit. The air of excitement, even from our place more than a mile away, was palpable. After dinner, we went to bed fully clothed inside our sleeping bags. We were up early the next morning, the main day of the festival, despite having slept badly on the frozen ground. The ukukus, men wearing black masks and costumes, had left the campsite in the early hours to climb the nearest mountain by the light of the full moon. From time to time during the procession, they stopped to dance on the glaciers, believing this would bring luck to their villages for the year to come. In the dawn light, we watched them winding their way back down like a large black snake. As they descended, they were joined by groups of dancers in bright traditional costumes. They performed wherever there was space. Although there did not seem to be anyone organizing them or any timetable, the whole festival had become a huge harmonious celebration.4.What do we know about family’s climb up and down the trail?A.They were too tired to enjoy the sight.B.They regretted extremely taking the trip.C.They were fascinated by the scenes there.D.They were greeted warmly by local people.5.The underlined word in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _______.A.suitable B.endurable C.noticeable D.understandable6.What can be inferred from the festival participants?A.They were all dressed in plain clothes.B.They were determined to reach the festival.C.They only continued their journey during daylight hours.D.They performed dances to demonstrate their traditional costumes.7.Where is this text most likely from?A.A health report.B.A sports newspaper.C.A fashion forum.D.A culture magazine.C(2024·安徽安庆·二模)The Feast of the Seven Fishes is an Italian-American tradition that dates back to an immigration (移民) wave in the 1900s. The Italian American tradition of the “Feast of the Seven Fishes” has appeared in movies and recently in the hit show The Bear. But talking of the origin, you’ll get many different answers. The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a dear tradition to many Italian Americans who enjoy at least seven different seafood dishes on Christmas Eve.A vast majority of Italian immigrants to the United States were from rural Southern Italy at the turn of the 19th century. They came to America because there were jobs from building railroads to skyscrapers. Friends and families found success and brought their loved ones to the U.S. Some say fish was chosen for the Feast because it was plentiful for impoverished families in Southern Italy. Others say the sea represented Italian Americans’ connection between their old and new homes.Writer and director Robert Tinnell made a comic in 2004 about his experience with the Feast of the Seven Fishes, which he later made into a 2019 movie. Growing up in North Central West Virginia, he fondly remembershis great grandmother organizing the Feast. After she died, his grandfather and other men in the family took over. That particular manly activity is something that the first Italian immigrants would have also performed out of necessity: men came to America first, without their wives and daughters. However, knowledge about where to shop, when to prepare, how to cook, the history behind the meal and family traditions soon became the responsibility of mothers to pass down to their daughters, says Di Giovine, a professor at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. They are also likely the ones who have the final say in making changes to recipes. Over time, families often adjust the menu to make things easier, cheaper, more abundant, and more accommodating of dietary restrictions.8.What do we know about the Feast of the Seven Fishes?A.It relates to a story of Italians.B.It’s made up of seven fishes.C.It marks a vital historic event.D.It’s about Americans in Italy.9.What does the underlined word “impoverished” in paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Needy.B.Unfortunate.C.Extended.D.Uneducated.10.What can we infer about Robert Tinnell from paragraph 3?A.He loves fishes.B.He’s an editor.C.He’s emotional.D.He teaches writing.11.What can be the best title for the text?A.A Fish-making Method B.A Festival TraditionC.A Cookery Book D.A Special CelebrationD(2024·安徽安庆·三模)When it comes to thriving under pressure, microbes (微生物) have us solidly beat. New research reveals that Carno-bacterium, a genus often associated with spoiled meat, can successfully divide and reproduce across an enormous range of external pressures — from the equivalent of a very thin atmosphere to crushing ocean depths. This adaptability is unknown for any other life-forms on Earth, researchers report in Astrobiology. Such hardiness suggests a single organism could survive in totally different environments throughout the solar system.Based on previous findings of various Carno-bacterium strains (菌群) growing well at high and low pressures, University of Florida microbiologist Wayne Nicholson and his colleagues systematically examined 14 strains’ responses to a wide span of pressure conditions. The team focused on strains isolated not only from meat(including seafood, chicken, etc.) but also from Siberian permafrost, an Antarctic lake and deep within the North Pacific’s Aleutian Trench. In the laboratory, Nicholson and his team exposed each strain to pressures ranging from 0.01 to 100 times Earth’s atmospheric pressure at sea level―corresponding to the pressures on the surface of Mars and inside the liquid water ocean of Jupiter’s moon Europa, respectively. The researchers found that 11 strains grew measurably at every pressure tested. Very few past studies focused on how well microbes tolerate a range of pressures, Nicholson says, but these results are nonetheless surprising given that most other organisms seem to be far more pressure-sensitive. “Humans have trouble breathing on Mount Everest,” he notes, “and that’s about 30 percent of sea-level atmospheric pressure.“Other bacteria have been shown to do well at comparably high pressures, says Felipe Gómez Gómez, an astrobiologist at the National Institute of Aerospace Technology in Madrid, who was not involved in the study. But these results are novel because they show that the same Carno-bacterium strains can endure so much pressure variation, he says: “What’s really challenging is the whole range.” These microbes’ ability means they could, for instance, theoretically survive at various depths in an alien ocean, Gómez Gómez adds.“ This has far-reaching astro-biological implications.”12.How did Wayne Nicholson and his colleagues carry out their research?A.Doing a survey.B.Listing examples.C.Making a model.D.Doing tests.13.What can we learn from paragraph 3?A.The results were not surprising at all.B.Researchers found that many strains could change during pressures.C.Researchers hardly knew the organism’s toleration on pressure in old days.D.The research showed why man can’t take a breath smoothly on Mount Everest.14.What’s Felipe Gómez Gómez’s attitude towards the research?A.Objective.B.Positive.C.Indifferent.D.Critical.15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?A.Bacteria Can Survive at Different Depths.B.Microbes Withstand the Solar System’s Pressure.C.All Life-forms’ Adaptations in Pressure Are Proved.D.Carno-bacterium Strains Have Thrived at Great Pressures.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

ALast week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona. He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends. My earliest memories of my father are a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and his family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful” as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think up things to say, feeling on guard. On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over my son’s funny facial expressions. Gone was my father’s critical (挑剔的) air and strict rules. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What had held him back before? The next day dad took out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, I never felt closer to him at that moment. After so many years, I’m a t last seeing another side of my father. Starting and keeping friendship requires effort and commitment. Many of us let our lives become so busy with work and other responsibilities that we don’t get around to scheduling time for pleasure and renewal(叙旧)with the friends, relatives and acquaintances we already have.Making the effort to call your friends more regularly and to accept more of their invitations can improve your social life in a hurry! Are there any people you could call right now and be sure to receive a pleasant welcome? Are there people that you could count onto help you in time of difficulty? Can you have close talks with them? Do you have fun when you are together? Are you happy to have them in your life?If you haven’t seen much of them lately, is it because you have become too busy? Have you grown apart? Was there an argument? If the main reason you haven’t been getting together with the people you already know is that you have got too busy, take a good look at how you spend your time. Compare it with your real values and priorities(优先考虑的事)in life. Is your busy lifestyle really bringing you the quality of life that you want?If you have become too busy for friends, why has this happened? Are you seeking material toys in your life at the expense of relationships with other human beings? Have you allowed your time to be overspent because you never say “No” to anyone? We always go camping and somewhere we can go walking, play football and be outside in the open air.—David For me close friends are the people you spend your free time with. I go out at weekends with a group of people —there are about seven of us, and I’d say we are all close friends. We also live near each other. They are intelligent animals born with both excellent memory and artistic talent. Elephants eat about 495 pounds of vegetarian food a day. They spend about 16 hours a day eating, but mustwalk about 4 miles a day in search of food. The average (通常的) elephant lives about 70 years, and its sharp memory allows it to remember places where it has found food as long as 30 years earlier, even as a baby.In an elephant’s travels, it comes across other elephants also looking for food. Some elephants are friendly, and some are not so nice. Elephants remember every elephant they have ever met. They can even recognize an elephant they perhaps haven’t seen for 30 years. They immediately remember whether this elephant is an enemy or a friend. When elephants are not searching for food, they sometimes produce art in the sand with their trunks (象鼻). They seem to enjoy just relaxing and painting in the sand. One day, an elephant zoo-keeper noticed this and gave an elephant a paint brush filled with red paint to see if the elephant would paint on a canvas (画布). Sure enough, it did, and since then elephants in most zoos have been given paint brushes, paints, and canvases. The resulting abstract (抽象的) art has been sold for high prices around the world. The money goes to support feeding the elephants in the zoos. Most felt that the elephants were only capable of painting abstracts. However, they have been trained to paint trees, flowers, and other things in nature. This has enabled us to understand “elephant genius (天才)” even more.24. What does the underlined word “underestimated” mean?A. Underdeveloped.B. Undervalued.C. Mistaken.D. Controlled.25. What can we learn about elephants’ memory?A. It can reach as far back as 30 years.B. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is allowing the company UK Seabed Resources Ltd. to explore the area on the Pacific Ocean floor for mining. However, the ISA said the company must first complete a biological study of the area before it can begin mining for metals. So, the company employed Amon and her group.Amon says that more than half of the animals they collected were completely new to science. Her group discovered not only new species, but new genera (动植物的属) of animals.Biological oceanographer Paul Snelgrove says that finding new species in the deep ocean is common. But, he said, finding a new genus “is really great.”Amon warns that if mining happens across the whole area, the ecosystem would be largely destroyed. But, she says, we will find the least damaging way to make mining possible.“There is a sort of scientific push to try and slow things down a bit so t hat the science can be done before ... so it can be done with the least influence possible ...” she says.“It’s likely we are going to develop at least some parts of these deep ocean environments and do it in a way that’s going to minimize (最小化) our influence,” says Paul.28. What did scientists try to find out in the CCZ?A. Whether there is life.B. Whether there are valuable minerals.C. What sea life exists there.D. What metals lie under the sea floor.29. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for probably the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late, walking around the house many times over, checking one last time to see that all was in order. It is hard to explain my feelings once I did finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house, I found the surroundings (周围的事物) grow unrecognizable.I began to have a feeling of unease mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep (陡峭的) drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction into a wilderness. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I felt forced to stop the car a moment to think carefully.I decided to step out and stretch (伸展) my legs a little. On the one side of the road, thickets and small trees rose sharply, while on the other I could now see the distant countryside and a town nearby.I walked a little way along the roadside, when I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, white-haired man. He called to me again and signaled me to join him. For a moment, I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine, and saw no reason not to do so.32. The only point in time that can be agreed on as the beginning of this tradition was 1582, in France. Before that year, the New Year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25. The celebration reached the highest point on April 1. With the reform of the calendar under Charles IX, the Gregorian calendar (公历,阳历) was introduced, and New Year’s Day was moved to January 1. However, because in those days communications were not as developed as they are today, many people did not receive the news for several years. Some people refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1. These backward people were considered “fools” by other people. They were often sent on “fools’ errands”(徒劳无益的工作) or were made the targets of jokes. This developed, over time, into a tradition of playing a trick on someone on the first day of April. The tradition eventually spread to England and Scotland in the eighteenth century. It was later introduced to the American colonies of both the Britain and France. April Fools’ Day thus developed into an intern ational fun feast, so to speak, with different nationalities specializing in their own kind of humor at the expense of their friends and families.36. Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I know which fork or knife to use? How can I let the family know that I’m thankful for their kindness?Yours,Knowing NothingDear Knowing Nothing,It’s a g ood idea to bring a gift when you go to a dinner party. If you are going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.Try to relax at the dinner table.
