One Child PolicyChinais thelargest population country in the world, which increase the difficulty todevelop china well. Consider Chinese development in the long term, some peoplepoint out that it is necessary for Chinese to carry out one child policy. However, there are opposite voice. They think one child policy is not good for children’shealthy grow up. I agree with the latter opinion. The reasons are as follows.
First of all, one child policy will make childrenfeel lonely. One child policy means every couple just has one child. The childhas no sisters or brothers to play with him. As time passes, they will feellonely. We all know that there is not everything children want to tell theirparents. Growing up with no brother or sister, the child may easy to get mentalproblem, such as, autism. In addition, as every parent just has one child, theywill spoil their child double times. As a result, the child will the so called littleemperor or little princess. When the child grows up, it is possible thathe couldn’t adjust the world, the society, because no one will treat them aslittle emperor or little princess except their parents.

●Supportive side:1、
●Disapproved side:On a smaller scale, elderly parents in a family are also receiving less attention from their only child. Under the One-Child Policy, the only child in the family is responsible for taking care of his or her parents. This is different from the situation in traditional Chinese era, when it was common to have big families and siblings could share the responsibility of taking care of their parents. Nowadays, the younger generation needs to focus on work or studies. Hence, some elderly people may not be taken good enough care of by their only child. This situation is revealed by the case of Xiao Zhe, a 26-year-old computer engineer in Beijing, whose parents live in Chongqing. “I’m so busy with my work that I can’t go back to visit them often,” he said. “When they’re not able to take care of themselves, I will hire a nurse to look after them” (Chen, 2010). Xiao’s case shows that the One- Child Policy is neither beneficial to the younger nor the older generation. Most parentsare happy when they see that their child has high achievements in career or studies, but usually they would rather hope their children to spend time with them. However, the One-Child Policy seems to have pulled parents and their only child further away from each other. If there are more children in one family; sons and daughters can take turns looking after their parents so that all of them can have a balance between work and family life.Gender imbalance is another issue resulting from the One-Child Policy and this problem catalyzes human trafficking activities in China. With reference to statistics in 2005, the ratio of male to female babies in mainland was 118.58 : 100 (Sezto, 2007). As the tradition of having male offspring to preserve the family’s name is deeply rooted in Chinese families, parents prefer having a male child to a female child. Some mothers do this by having sex- selective abortion although it is illegal (Hesketh et al., 2005). Some parents even buy male children from human trafficking groups. In China, there are more than 200,000 children reported missing every year. Most of the missing children are believ ed to be stolen by human traffickers (“Police refuse to help”, 2010). Not only children in China are targets of these human trafficking groups, women from other countries are also victims. Chinese men cannot find their partners for marriage in theregion because of gender imbalance, thus they "purchase" their wives from other countries (“Gender imbalance”, 2010). The One-Child Policy stimulates the growth of human trafficking activities which bring misery to families. The abolition of the One-Child Policy is a method to ease the problem of gender imbalance and it contributes to fighting against illegal activities like sex-selective abortion and human trafficking.Children’s psychological health is also negatively affected because of the stress imposed upon them. It is common for parents to have high aspiration on their offspring. Now that couples in China can only have a child, they have even bigger dreams bestowed upon their only child. Parents in China want their child to be a well- rounded persons, achieving excellence in different areas like academic, sports and extra- curricular activities. In this way, teenagers have to face loads of pressure at their early age which triggers mental illnesses in some of them. According to a research done by the Beijing Municipal Health Department in 2007, over 30% of students from primary schools and secondary schools had mental problems of different levels, including emotional breakdowns, phobias, unusual behaviours and showing acts of violence (“Mental illnesses”, 2007). China Soong Ching Ling Foundation also conducted a survey about teenage mental well-being; it reveals that 13.3% of the interviewed students had thought of committing suicide, of which 4.9% even attempted to commit suicide (“Mental illnesses”, 2007).Parents should therefore pay more attention to the mental well-beings of their children. Too much pressure and expectation can be counter-productive. With the abandonment of the One-Child Policy, parents may not be so focused on one child so that children can live with a less intense and stressful life, which is better for their psychological health.Having no siblings in his/her family, the personality development of the child can be adversely affected. Under the One-Child Policy, the only child in a family is the ‘little emperor’ or ‘little queen’. Parents give their only child the best they can afford. These children are often known as the ‘lucky generation’. However, parents being over-protective and spoiling can be harmful to children. Even if the child is not behaving well, parents prefer not to scold nor lecture this him or her. Thus, the over-spoiled children become more self-centred and less considerate (“The spoiled generation”, 2007). This is different from the situation in the old days when t here were around 5 to 6 children living in the same house; children had to learn to get along with one another when they were very young so they tended to be more considerate and caring. Although it is understandable for parents to be protective to their only precious child, the tendency would only give rise to selfishness in the younger generation. After all, a society should be filled with love and harmony but not indifference and inconsideration. The One-Child policy creates a spoiled generation who is often less considerate and more self-centred; so the policy should be discontinued for the good of the children’s personality development. Some may argue that the One- Child policy in China should be continued because there are not enough resources to satisfy the huge population and such an over-population can be a heavy burden for the development of China. However, the population growth nowadays is in a steady increase and people do not aim at having a big family; most couples would like to have only one or two children. Also, China ranked second in gross domestic product (GDP) in 2009 (“China’s GDP”, 2010), which shows that China has a much better development and more resources when compared to the situation in the 1970s. Considering the change in peopl e’s views and the development of China, the One-Child policy should be discontinued in order to suit the present. My pointIn conclusion, despite the fact that the One- Child Policy has effectively controlled the population growth in the twentieth century, there are many defects with this policy. On the societal level, the policy intensifies the problems of ageing population and gender imbalance. Increasing medical costs and human trafficking activities are side effects that come along with these problems. On the individual level, the policy does more harm than good to children’s development. Children will have a personality built-up and better psychological health if they grow up with siblings. With China’s steady economic development, reso urces are enough to take care of a growing population. Small-sized families with only one to two children are also more preferable nowadays. Therefore, the One-Child Policy in China should be discontinued for the defects it makes and the fact that it is less applicable to society today.2009111027唐雪林。

As one of the biggest and famous countries in the world, China has the long civilization in history and also obtains the largest population hundred years ago which has achieved 1.4 billion in 2011. Therefore, from the year of 1979, Chinese Government implemented the ‘one-child policy’ which aims to control the national population instead of growing population aimlessly without the sustainable development.According to the basic point and nature sprit of macro economy, the positive growing margin in national population is the fundamental factors and important power in national economy development. It means that the more people you got, the more market segments you can create to increase the economy level in not only business, but also in country modern industry and agricultures. Meanwhile, the high level and speed in economy development also can create more national wealth to whole of the country and the citizens who live in that land. However, why Chinese Government issued ‘one-child policy’ to control this growing population? Regarding with another simple economy point, overdone growing in population or national economy also will bring some of very serious problems to the country. The first point is the food issue. As the biggest developing country in the world, food issue is much more necessary to the government rather than any other issues. It is the very basic factors to maintain the people’s daily life and work, also is the source in national development as well. Thereby, any kind of over limit population growing will cause the starvation in the country, and it will bring the negative effect in national development. The second point is the nature resources. Nature resources are another fundamental point in national industry development. In our daily life, it is impossible to live without any kind of industrial products, such as light, oil product, car, oven, computer and etc. There products brings convenience in our daily life, and people cannot live without these important tools. Thinking this topic oppositely, over limit in population growing will cause fewer resources in these products, and it also will let the economy backward. To sum up, suitable population growing rate can bring positive effect in national development and ‘one-child policy’ is a very good policy to achieve this target.。
(One Child Policy)

82-331: Advanced Chinese I, Section A在世界上,中国是第三大国家。

《独生子女政策的利与弊》高中英语作文(中英文版)The Pros and Cons of the One-Child PolicyThe one-child policy, implemented in China in 1979, was a significant demographic and social policy that aimed to control the country's population growth. This policy has both advantages and disadvantages, which have shaped various aspects of Chinese society. One of the main advantages of the one-child policy was its significant impact on population control.By limiting families to only one child, China was able to reduce its population growth rate, which helped to alleviate pressures on resources and the environment.Additionally, the policy has led to a decrease in poverty rates and improved living standards for many Chinese families. However, the one-child policy also has several disadvantages. One of the most pressing issues is the rapidly aging population that China now faces. With fewer young people entering the workforce, the country is experiencing a labor shortage and a strain on its social security system. Moreover, the policy has led to a gender imbalance, with more male births than female births, which has caused social issues and challenges for the affected individuals and families.Another significant disadvantage of the one-child policy is the increase in the number of 'left-behind children.' These are children whoare living in rural areas while their parents migrate to urban areas for work. This separation can have negative effects on their emotional and psychological development. In conclusion, while the one-child policy has helped to control China's population growth and improve living standards, it has also led to significant social and demographic challenges. The policy's impact on Chinese society is complex and multifaceted, and its consequences will continue to be felt for years to come.。
One-child policy --advantages and disadvantages(只生一个-利与弊)
One-child policy --advantages and disadvantages The population of china is 1.3 billion now. In China, we have many problems relate to the overpopulation . The large population has made many bad results, for example, the environment is becoming worse and worse, so to reduce the population is urgent. In order to alleviate the pressure of large population on economy, the government applies one-child policy. Families live in the city can only have one child, in rural areas, some families are allowed to have a second child under certain conditions. In china almost every family has only one child, in this way-china’s one child policy, the government has controlled the growth of the population. In a family of three-mother, father and the child, the child is usually brought up patiently. the parents let him have good education and want him to be a useful person to the society when he grows up. One child policy has made a contribution to improving the people’s quality.Although the policy is success, it still has some problems. In China, more and more families have the only one child ,so the parents give the best thing for the child and the children don’t have to do the things if they don’t like it. Some child do all the things they like and they don’t care other people’ feeling. They always feel alone and don’t want to make a friend. They are short of term-work..Today, in some areas people still think boy is better than girl. So people want to have boys. And now another problem appeared. There are more than 37million males than the females. A lot of men cannot find girlfriends. In my opinion, one-child policy of our country which has benefited and will benefit the economic development. As to the social problems it causes, I also expect more effective measures to be taken to solve them with time going on。
CHINA'S_ONE_CHILD_POLICY
WHAT IS IT?
China’s One Child policy is a policy that the Chinese government introduced in 1979 to try and solve the problem of overpopulation. It’s main purpose was to make sure that China could support its large population with facilities such as healthcare, education, housing, good jobs and most importantly, food. The aim was to reduce poverty and to improve overall quality of life for the people. The Policy is not formally written into Chinese law but it is strictly enforced with three main factors. These are: •Favouring delayed marriage and delayed child birth. •Favouring fewer and healthier births, rather than more unsuccessful ones •Laying down the rule of one child per couple.

Chineseone-childpolicy
Chian’s one child policyCause:In 1980,the Xinhua news agency announced a prediction of Songjian about china’s population development process, it said that if china’s population continue to develop so quickly, there will be over 1.4 billion people until 2000 and 4 billion people until 2050 in china. After the announcement, many people felt shocked and panic. Some experts thought the large number of population would block the development of economy. Also, it would cause the shortage of some natural resources. In September,1980, the fifth Chinese national people’s congress set up the goal that we should make Chinese population less than 1.2 billion at the end of 20 century. So, without rigorous argument,(严密的论证) one-child policy was carried out in1980s.Positive effect:1,promote the financial accumulation of the society. Because there are less new-born people, the consumption also reduce, so we can save more money.(加速资金积累)2,It became easier for people to find a job because there are less people and less employment pressure. At the same time ,it can also promote the development of economy.(利于劳动就业)3,It can make children receive more and good education, because our country can use the money which we save from the policy to improve the quality of education. And parents who only have one child can have more money to pay for our educational fare.(促进教育,提高人口质量)4,A family don’t need to raise many chidren, so they have more money to pay for their entertainment, their life can be more colorful.(享乐消费)Negative effect:1, The aging process has been speed up because of one-child policy. It was believed that our country will become a aging society in 2020. however, our country’s statistic office find that we have become a aging society in October,1999.2, The sex ratio become bigger. The newest ratio of male and female is 117:100. it means that there will be more and more men can not find a wife. This problem will lead to more serious social contradiction and social crisis.3, Another crisis is about the growing of children. If the only child of a family can not grow up healthily or died because of illness or accident, it will be a great hit to the family. Also, the family become incomplete and there will be nobody who can take care of the old parents, and the social pressure will become heavier. Statistics from the fifth demographic census(第五次人口普查)show that there are over 570,000 families who used to have a child but now haven’t.4, the children will bear much more pressure in raising old family members. If there is only one child in a family, it means that he should in charge of supporting 4 old family members himself. There will be more problems about whether the child has enough money to support the family, whether there are enough room for them to live and so on.5, the society also bear much pressure, because more old people mean that we must development social security system. However, a research show that our country have owed retired old people 2trilion yuan. 5,the crisis of social development. As there are more and more old people and less and less young people who can work, economy may be influenced. Meanwhile, it may also lead to crisis of national defense because there are not enough young and strong people who can join the army and protect our country. In my opinion, this policy do some benefit to the society at the beginning. However, we can see the disadvantage of it overweight the advantage from my analysis just now. so I think that we should adjust the policy according to the situation in different regions. Such as in those districts which have serious aging effect, we should give up the policy. But in those districts which still have high rate birth, we should keep the policy. Meanwhile, the government should take more suggestion from all fields of the society into consideration. It is because that one-child policy didn’t consider about people’s suggestions before it was carried out, now there are many problems we can not solve. So, I believe if the government take more suggestion from people, problems can be reduced.。

One Child Policy: Continue or not?
Student ID:120212010101 Name:Lydia (Zhang Lin)
A young mother who had always dreamed about having a boy baby finally found herself conceiving a girl. Frustrated and desperate, she aborted the embryo impulsively since she was forced to have only one child. This is not uncommon in China. These years, one child policy has aroused heated debate in the contemporary society because it has caused the sex ratio in birth more imbalanced; however, some people argue that it is still indispensable to control the population explosion, but China is close to exhausting its demographic dividend and encounter the harshest dilemma in the following decades, so one child policy should be abandoned.
First and foremost, China is going to undergoing the aging population problem, during which period the development, both societally and economically, will be saturate, even decline. In other words, if the one child policy is being continued, it will bring about various problems, such as a shrinking workforce, a falling demand and an increasing financial burden on government. Worse still, a soaring amount of old people have nobody to lean on and cannot be took good care of, which render them to suffer from physical pains and even some psychologicalproblems. All of these consequences will eventually exert adverse effects on many aspects individually, societally and nationally.
However, opponents claim that the large population in China is exhausting the natural resources, depleting energy and contaminating the environment more severely. For example, the metropolis are already deeming with people and vehicles which
leads to various pollution, such as air pollution, noise pollution and light pollution, making the city an uncomfortable place to live. Conversely, a controlled population can generate less contamination and allow the government to predict the trend and make corresponding measures to tackle the environmental issues more easily. Once the one child policy is quitted, the baby boom is bound to happen, which can cause various unpredictable problems.
Admittedly, one child policy has brought us numerous benefits, but facing the current situation that China’s demographic dividend is diminishing, the birth control is not plausible any more. Besides, hundreds of thousands of children have experienced, is experiencing and is going to experience a lonely childhood since they have no brothers or sisters to play with, to talk to and to share. I can understand that feeling because so many times I was left alone at home with overwhelming solitude. Can you imagine what’s the pupils’feeling when they has to stay alone at home and play with the wall and toys the whole day?
To conclude, it is people’s own choice and right to decide to have one child or two; government should not intervene in it. Japan has so large a population within a so narrow land, but it still does well in its economy and people’s living standard. So what is more important and urgent is to enhance the quality of the population, establish a sound education and welfare system and develop our technology. Only in this way can a country achieve a sustainable development.。
