“福兮祸所依，祸兮福所伏”，几千年前老子说过的这句话，曾经被认为是带有神秘色彩“宿命论”，但几千年的历史证明，“福祸相依”的观点既是事物发展客观规律的反映，也是人们看待事物、认识事物时应有的一种科学态度。
成语典故“塞翁失马”的故事对此做了极好的诠释。
说是古时靠近边塞的地方，住着一位老翁。
老翁精通占卜之术，擅长推测吉凶。
有一次，他家的一匹马，无缘无故跑到胡人的住地去了。
邻居们都来安慰他，他心中有数，平静地说：“这件事难道不是福吗？”过了几个月，那匹丢失的马忽然跑回来了，而且还领回了一匹胡人的骏马。
