It expresses, in part, our inescapable connection with the outside world, the fact that we touch other people’s lives simply by existing. But how much more are you, Harvard graduates of 20xx, likely to touch other people’s lives? Your intelligence, your capacity for hard work, the education you have earned and received, give you unique status, and unique responsibilities. Even your nationality sets you apart. The great majority of you belong to the world’s only remaining superpower. The way you vote, the way you live, the way you protest, the pressure you bring to bear on your government, has an impact way beyond your borders. That is your privilege, and your burden. If you choose to use your status and influence to raise 1/ 5your voice on behalf of those who have no voice; if youchoose to identify not only with the powerful, but with the powerless; if you retain the ability to imagine yourself into the lives of those who do not have your advantages, then it will not only be your proud families who celebrate your existence, but thousands and millions of people whose reality you have helped change. We do not need magic to change the world.英语演讲稿2we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.I am nearly finished. I have one last hope for you, which is something that I already had at 21. The friends with whom I sat on graduation day have been my friends for life. They are my children’s godparents, the people to whom I’ve been able to turn in times of trouble, people who have been kind enough not to sue me when I took their names for Death Eaters. At our graduation we were bound by enormous affection, by our shared experience of a time that could never come again, and, of course, by the knowledge that we held certain photographic evidence that would be exceptionally valuableif any of us ran for Prime Minister.2/ 5So today, I wish you nothing better than similarfriendships. And tomorrow, I hope that even if you remember not a single word of mine, you remember those of Seneca, another of those old Romans I met when I fled down the Classics corridor, in retreat from career ladders, in search of ancient wisdom:As is a tale, so is life: not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.I wish you all very good lives.英语演讲稿3Thank you very much.I’m so honored. I never expect there are so many people coming here to listen to my talk.Well, 20 years ago I came to America. My first trip to America, to Seattle. Before that I learned so much about America, from my books, from my teachers, from my school, and my parents. And I think I know enough about America. But when I came to America I thought totally wrong. America is not what I learned from the books. And in Seattle I found the Internet.nd then I came back and tell my friends that I’m going to open a company called Internet. I invited 24 of my friends, had a two-hour discussion. And finally we had a vote. 23 ofthem against me. “Forget about it. There’s no such kind of 3/ 5network called Internet. Don’t do it.” There’s only oneperson who said “Jack, I trust you. I don’t know what that is, but if you want to try it, go ahead, try it. Because you’re still young.” At that time I was 30 years old.英语演讲稿4I started my business, without knowing anything about computer, without knowing anything about business. I started my first company, my wife and I and a school mate. We borrowed [start] from US $1,000 we start the business. It was so difficult. I called myself like a blind man riding on the back of blind tigers. Jumping around for the past 20 years I survive today. For the first three years life was really bad.I remember I tried to borrow US $3,000 from the banks. It took me three months asking any friends I know to borrow the money.Still failed, coz verybody said “Jack is telling a lie, because there’s no such network called Internet in 1996.”So one day, later 1996, China was connected to the Internet. I invited ten media friends to my apartment. I want to tell them I’m not telling a lie. There is a network called Internet. We waited three hours and a half to see thefirst – to download the first picture.4/ 5英语演讲稿5A nd people said “Is that thing going to work?” And I say “Yeah, it’ll work, but not today. In ten years it’ll work.” But at least it proved that I was not telling a lie.I remember when we tried to help our small business to sell online. Nobody want to sell because nobody come to buy. So first week we have seven employees, we buy and sell ourselves. The second week somebody start to sell on a website. We buy everything they sell. We have two rooms full of things we bought for New Year’s, all garbage] for the first two weeks. In order to tell people that it works. It was not easy. Since 1995 to 1999 we failed. We go nowhere, our business, because nothing was ready. In 1999 I invited 18 friends of mine who came to my apartment. We decided to do it again. We call the name alibaba. And people say why Alibaba? We believe Internet is a treasure island which opens sesame for small business. And we used Alibaba because it’s easy to spell, easy to remember. And we want to focus on helping small business.5/ 5。

Today, we continue a 265- year-old tradition that binds us with a sense of pride and hope and of deep and never-ending curiosity. We initiate those who are committed to a world of openness and debate, who have learned the power of discovering the unknown and who have accepted the great responsibility that comes with acquiring knowledge into a community steadfastly poised to shape our world for the better. At the end of our timetogether today, joining a legacy of those who have come before them, we will have a new class of alumni representing 16 distinct schools along with affiliated institutions of Teachers College and Bernard college. The potential for trouble is palpable. And as we explore the profound meaning of this moment, there is one special part of our community deserves unique recognition. Graduates, as much as we, your faculty, feel deep, deep affection for you, nothing can compare to the pure, unqualified adoration of your parents and families, though you will never be able to express fully the infinite gratitude I know you feel, please take this opportunity to thank them. For my remarks today, I have three parts. I want to talk about the idea of the academy, about the enemies of the search for truth and about what we are to do.In awarding you the degrees in your respective field, we recognize your academic accomplishment and now acknowledge your expertise in some area of study. But you are now also an expert in higher education in America, simply by virtue of your presence and deep engagement with this little world over the past several years.英语演讲稿2This means two things. First, whether you are happy or sad about leaving us behind, whether you will return for another round of being a student, or you are intent on rejoining us, at some point, in a professorial capacity and becoming a permanent member of this community, I can assure you that this is true, what you have just experienced with stay with you for the rest your lives and in all likelihood it will take on greater and greater meaning with the passage of time. The second point is that I want to ask you this morning to take stock of what is now your deep and experiential knowledge about the nature and roles of universities like Columbia and with that knowledge to reflect on the state of modern society and the threats that were now facing to the deepest values that undergird these institutions, to reflect on what is at stake in our own country and for the people over the world. We need to raise our voices at the time, such as this. The idea of the academy as something separate and discrete removed from daily life is as old as human civilization. The desire to step back from the fray, to grasp what is happening at this moment in history, to find a meaning to it all and to find out what is good lifeis forever with us. Who hasnt at one point or another wanted to emulate Michel de Montaigne. If only we could take up residence in a tower on a beautiful state and write essays connecting the wisdom of the ancients with contemporary human existence and in that self-reflective pose discover our true purpose and meaning. This is a secret dream we all harbor. As always Shakespeare was familiar with this dream, and we used it to give us many notable characters whose pursuit of this ideal often ended in trouble.英语演讲稿3Theres Prospero in the Tempest, while the Duke of Milan he wishes quote to only be transported and wrapped in the secret study and he feels his library large enough. This, however, creates the opportunity for this evil brother to stage a coup, landing him on a remote island were to be sure his dark arts mastered in secret study come in handy, as may yours.Or theres Ferdinand, king of Loves Labors Lost, who enlisted three subordinates to join him as quote brave conquerors who will forswear the baser impulses of love, food and sleep in order to。

最新毕业典礼演讲稿英文5篇毕业典礼演讲稿英文精选篇1Dear teachers, dear classmates:Hello everyone!Time flies. In the twinkling of an eye, three years have passed. We must say goodbye to our dear teacher, and we must say goodbye to our classmates. No campus corner has left our footprints. Wherever we go, whatever we see, we can evoke a string of memories.Thinking back three years ago, we came together with innocence and hope. We are energetic and enthusiastic, and we are full of vision and expectation for the future. In the past three years, we have been enjoying the intense and intense school life in the sweat and feeling the concern of the teacher. In the study, we are in the teachers inculcate teaching gradually sensible, in the teachers patient and meticulous teaching happy learning; in life, we are in the teachers care under the care of the healthy growth, in the teachers care to feel the warmth of the family. Thousands of words do not mean our friendship with teachers. We can not finish our lingering nostalgia for teachers. Three years of study and life, more than 1000 days and nights, a teacher and teacher to talk to the heart of the heart, there is a teachers enthusiastic guidance, by the school leadership of the teachings in the busy schedule. There are encouragement, criticism, communication and guidance, all of which are the most precious wealth in our hearts. The mid-term exam is, after all, the first most sacred test in our life, and its pressure can be imagined. You know, teacher, your affectionate gaze is our strongest dependence. I believe that all the sweat and ideals of hard work will be transformed into a good news report. We know that it is the best reward for your long selfless dedication.Yes, we are full of confidence in this. Teacher, I feel your expectations, your eyes. Now I can still remember every smile you have, every time you talk, your every lesson is still fresh in our mind. Without recollection, everything is so vivid and very gratifying. Teacher, we really do not want to talk about leaving, we are deeply attached to you and campus. We should follow the school style of civilization, enterprising, realistic and innovative. Under the encouragement of the school motto of Ming and Germany, the learning, the diligence and the seeking, we should study hard and innovate under the inspiring of learning good thinking, respecting teachers and keeping discipline, improving themselves and developing harmoniously. We want to graduate from the alma mater and face the teachers and younger brothers and sisters, we hope that you will cherish the time, study hard and fight hard. Facing the beloved teachers, we wish you health, the smooth work, the peach and plum all over the world; in the face of the dear alma mater, we want to engrave you in the heart, no matter in the future. Wherever we go, we will be proud to say that we are alma mater.毕业典礼演讲稿英文精选篇2Dear school leaders, angel like teachers, children in bud:Good morning, everybody.Today, I am a junior college graduate student and vice president of student union as my last speech at Zhao Lin junior high school. Three years, the end of junior high school life, three years of life, such as knife like wind, such as sword, came hurriedly, also hurried, time leisurely, the years leisurely. In three years of life, you may be sad for yourself, to pain yourself, to hate yourself, or to blame the teacher, the teacher, the teacher, the drops of life, and the memory of us. We saw that Kay was sitting in a tight seat, enjoying his love in his work. The summer breeze is like a temple of old wine, the tree of Lin Yuan, the people of Lin Garden are a little drunk. Today we will take a small drunken step and take the old boat ticket with faith. We have the youth, we should dare to struggle, youth is the starting point of the dream, after you walk, you will find that my future is not a dream; youth is the capital of people, after you walk, you will find that the mature you will not be poor; youth is the platform of life, after walking, the heart of the dream will sail to the next station. Life is no more than a mountain, outside the Castle Peak outside the building, life is rich and free. Once we chased crazy, flock fighting, now when we know the courage to face, once did not understand the world, eat and drink pleasure, now should be the chair of needle felt, rock pavement, Enron never move. The writing of the pen is no longer wild and proud. It is written in a small brush. It is written in a small print. It is really exquisite and real. When we met again after many years, looking back at a smile, Yunlong brother was safe. I hope that each of us has a happy life, a tender smile, a bitter smile, and a long smile on the sky. I laugh from across the sky. Our hearts are beating, blood is burning again, come on, let us chase after the life that is full of anger. Looking back to the past three years, I find that I have bee more mature. I have been aware of the importance of learning knowledge, which is beneficial to my future. What impressed me a lot is the help that my teachers and parents offered when I was in trouble, which supported me during the period. Moreover, I regretted that I didnt work harder. From time to time, facing the pressure, I quarreled with my parents, about which I feel sorry and regretful. To live up to my parents expectation, I will make my effort to work harder in university. It is no doubt that there will be many challenges waiting for me. However, no matter how difficult it is, I will spare no effort to overe it.When it es to the suggestion that I can give to you, I hold the belief that in no case should you set aside the study. We’ve seen ‘1,000-year floods’ hit the Midwestern and Southern United States multiple times in a decade. And we’ve seen record-breaking wildfires ravage California and record-breaking typhoons kill thousands in the Philippines. This is a true crisis. And if we fail to rise to the occasion, your generation, your children, and grandchildren will pay a terrible price. So scientists know there can be no delay in taking action – and many government and political leaders around the world are starting to understand that.Yet here in the United States, our federal government is seeking to become the only country in the world to withdrawfromthe Paris Climate Agreement – the only one. Not even North Korea is doing that. Those in Washington who deny the science of climate change are no more based in reality than those who believe the moon landing was faked. And while the moon landing conspiracy theorists are relegated to the paranoidcorners of talk radio, climate skeptics occupy the highest positions of power in the United States government. Now, in the administration’s defense, climate change, they say, is only a theory – yeah, like gravity is only a theory.People can ignore gravity at their own risk, at least until they hit the ground. But when they ignore the climate crisis, they are not only putting themselves at risk, they are putting all humanity at risk.。

应届毕业典礼五分钟英语演讲稿范文五篇英语演讲稿1On behalf of our proud trustee, our esteem faculty, our distinguished alumni, our devoted families and our unparalleled friends gathered here and across the globe virtually, I welcome you to this very special moment in time. At the end of our time together today, joining a legacy of those who have come before them, we will have a new class of alumni representing 16 distinct schools along with affiliated institutions of Teacher’s College and Bernard college. The potential for trouble is palpable. And as we e某plore the profound meaning of this moment, there is one special part of our community deserves unique recognition. Graduates, as much as we, your faculty, feel deep, deep affection for you, nothing can compare to the pure, unqualified adoration of your parents and families, though you will never be able to e某press fully the infinite gratitude I know you feel, please take this opportunity to thank them. For my remarks today, I have three parts. I want to talk about the idea of the academy, about the enemies of the search for truth and about what we are to do.In awarding you the degrees in your respective field, we recognize your academic accomplishment and now acknowledge your e某pertise in some area of study. But you are nowalso an e某pert in higher education in America, simply by virtue of your presence and deep engagement with this little world over the past several years.英语演讲稿2This means two things. First, whether you are happy or sad about leaving us behind, whether you will return for another round of being a student, or you are intent on rejoining us, at some point, in a professorial capacity and becoming a permanent member of this community, I can assure you that this is true, what you have just e某perienced with stay with you for the rest your lives and in all likelihood it will take on greater and greater meaning with the passage of time. The second point is that I want to ask you this morning to take stock of what is now your deep and e某periential knowledge about the nature and roles of universities like Columbia and with that knowledge to reflect on the state of modern society and the threats that we’re now facing to the deepest values that undergird these institutions, to reflect on what is at stake in our own country and for the people over the world. We need to raise our voices at the time, such as this. The idea of the academy as something separate and discrete removed from daily life is as old as human civilization. The desire to step back from the fray, to grasp what is happening at this moment in history, to find a meaning to it all and to find out what is good life is forever with us. Who hasn’t at one point or another wanted to emulate Michel de Montaigne. If only we could take up residence in a tower on a beautiful state and write essays connecting the wisdom of the ancients withcontemporary human e某istence and in that self-reflective pose discover our true purpose and meaning. This is a secret dream we all harbor. As always Shakespeare was familiar with this dream, and we usedit to give us many notable characters whose pursuit of this ideal often ended in trouble.英语演讲稿3There’s Prospero in the Tempest, while the Duke of Milan he wishes quote to only be transported and wrapped in the secret study and he feels his library large enough. This, however, creates the opportunity for this evil brother to stage a coup, landing him on a remote island were to be sure his dark arts mastered in secret study come in handy, as may yours.Or there’s Ferdinand, king of Love’s Labors Lost, who enlisted three subordinates to join him as quote brave conquerors who will forswear the baser impulses of love, food and sleep in order to study and learn only to be confounded in his dedication when he finds himself falling in love.I suspect that many of you during your time here have lived closer to the e某perience of Ferdinand than to the e某perience of Prospero. The advent of modern American university which largely happenedin the last century has been the institutionalization of that human dream and this little physical space in which we gather together this morning is in many respects the near perfect fulfillment of that human vision. I know no other that can match it.The columns, pillars, pediments, demes, classical inscriptions ascending steps, granite and limestone and marble and brick facades, which surround us convey the message that this is its own universe, a place governed by strictly observed code of academic inquiry, an insistence on open dialogue, informed by all-pervading skepticism and respect for the legacy of human achievement, created about a century ago, the Morningside campus represents the idea of an ordered, classical and even inward-looking world. To walk on to this campus is to feel one’s I.Q go up by 10 points.英语演讲稿4Part of the genius of this system of universities involves adding you into the mi某. It is the combination of brilliant scholars who dedicate their lives to e某ploring what we know, might know and must know about all the things in the universe, who work daily at the edge of accumulated human knowledge, sheltered by the principle of academic freedom, guided by the norms of scholarly temperament, working within the decentralized governance structure of the University. Together with the most brilliant and curious youth brought in from all over the world, to whom we teach everything we know so that they can go on with their lives and know even more.It is all this that creates the utterly unique conte某t of the modern research university and that unites the e某hilarating intertwined ambitions of scholarship and teaching. The structure and functioning of these institutions are unique, no other organization has ever been designed in these ways, nor would it seem to anyone sensible to do。

This time, Id like to talk something about English.I love English.English language is now used everywhere in the world. It has bee the most mon language on Inter and for international trade.Learning English makes me confident and brings megreat pleasure. When I was seven, my mother sent me to an English school. At there, I played games and sang English songs with other children .Then I discovered the beauty of the language, and began my colorful dream in the English world.Everyday, I read English following the tapes.Sometimes, I watch English cartoons. On the weekend, I often go to the English corner.By talking with different people there, I have made more and more friends as well as improved my oral English.I hope I can travel around the world someday.I want to go to America to visit Washington Monument, because the president Washington is my idol.Of course, I want to go to London too, becauseEngland is where English language developed. If I can ride my bike in Cambridge university, I will be very happy.I hope I can speak English with everyone in the world.Ill introduce China to them, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and Anshan.I know, Rome was not built in a day.I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well.If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So I believe as I love English everyday , it willlove me too.英语演讲稿 3Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, today i am so happy to stand here to give you a rather, a real story of mine.Though with time going by,i can still remember what you once told should be a brave ,you looked into myin, year out, nearly most of my memories are fading littleby only this simple sentence remained, without being forgotten in my life.Again and again,i can not stop myself from thinking about ordinary, but so impressive,so moving, just like the brightest sunshine,it helps me go through the darkest am such a sensitive girl in your said,my sorroful faciale_pression made feel so ,there is one thing i never tell you, that is ,i am being a big girl gradually with your words and never tell you about it,for i believeoneday, you can see the great changes of mine for is whati want to do in i know, that will be the best gift for you.I suddenly think of a song named MY HEART WILL GO isa beautiful sentence going like are safe in my thanonce,i was moved to tears by know ,i am also safe in yourhave already forgotten when i told you i was going to leave for Australia this summer just smiled asusual, gently you decide to do,i will be in favor ofit, but, just ohing, remember, when you fell lonely abroad,do not forget we are here ,praying for are all around you,far across the distance and space between closed my eyes, the flashback memories we hadtogether, once we played games on the palyground,we played jokes on each other, you always wrote a lot of sentences on my articles to encourage the most unforgetable thing, you told me,you believed m i could be a big or later. At that specific moment,i suddenly understood the meaning of this sentence on that day,i smiled as you used to,looking at last words i said were, keep walking in sunshine.Yes,keep walking in said to you ,also to know i am not alone wiht your pany, and we can keep walking in sunshine till the last minute of our days.I promise,i will be a big girl.I promise,i will be a brave girl.I promise,i will keep walking in sunshine. That is my speech, thank you!英语演讲稿 4Honorable Judges, fellow students: Recently, there is a heated debate in our society. The college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive e_ceptional education ate_traordinary places. But will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? Will we be able to better the lives of others? Will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country? The cynics say the college students are the peredlost generation, which would cringe at the slightest disfort. But the cynics are wrong. The college students I see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. We help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money. The cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. But again, the cynics are wrong. We care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth.Last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer. As college students, we are adolescents at thecritical turning point in our lives. We all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even thefuture of our country.I believe in all my fellow classmates.Though we are still ine_perienced and even a little bit childish.I believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. We are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place.I believe in our future.英语演讲稿 5This is a glass of water, tasteless, right? Howeverif you add sugar, it will taste sweet, but if you add vinegar, it will bee bitter. The same is true with our life the flavor is createdby our choices. If kindness is added to a strange you will have a friend; but if hostility is added, you will have an enemy. If love is added to a pile of red bricks you willhave a home, but if hatred is add to those bricks , youwill have an concentration c.So my dear friends, never plain that life is boring and the world is disappointing. If dont like the taste of your life, change the ingredients.Three year ago, I weighed more than 100 hundred kilograms which caused significant embarrassment and frustration in my life.Like always failing my P.E e_aminations, like always being laughed at by girls, like being terrified to speakin public. It was my grandmothers encouragement that revivedfrom my passive attitude to bee confident in myself. She said ; My dear, if you cant change you figure, why not treat it as your own style. So I began to cautiously employ the new way of thinking.By choosing to change my outlook on life, I developed the confidence to make a difference and finally I found a totally new world. So my dear friend, if faith, hope, love, endurance are added toyour life, you will find the confidence to conquer your limitation and embrace new challenges. And hopefully with my speech included, you will have a fantastic speech contest.

One of the legacies of re ___iving a world-class education is the sobering awareness of the inadequacy of our knowledge. Some years ago, one of the people I admire and respect most architect is Renzo Piano just turned 70 and I asked him what felt like. He said that, as much as he had thought about and prepared for that moment, it still came as a shock. Now I can attest to that feeling of shock but more than anything he said it ___de him feel that our proper lifespan should be 210 years, 70 to learn, 70 to do, and 70 to teach the next generation. This lovely description captures an elementary fact of life: a good life has the feeling that we’re learning more and more as we go. And that we could do even better if we just learned a bit more. I hope that you are fortunate enough to carry that spirit of life with you and we must hope together that it continues to define this nation andthe world. In the ___nturies ahead, on behalf of Columbia University, I extend to all our graduates the ___ntennial class of 20xx warmest congratulations.Thank you!President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, proud parents, and, above all, graduates. The first thing I would like to say is ‘thank you.’ Not only has Harvard given me an extraordinary honour, but the weeks of fear and nausea I have endured at the thought of giving this men ___ment address have ___de me lose weight.A win-win situation! Now all I have to do is take deep breaths, squint at the red banners and convin ___ myself that I am at the world’s largest Gryffindor reunion.Delivering a men ___ment address is a great responsibility; or so I thought until I cast my mind back to my own graduation. The men ___ment speaker that day was the distinguished British philosopher Baroness Mary Warnock. Reflecting on her speech has helped me enormously in writing this one, because it turns out that I can’tremember a single word she said. This liberating discovery enables me to pro ___ed without any fear that I might inadvertently influen ___ you to abandon promising careers in business, the law or politics for the giddy delights of being a gay wizard. You see? If all you remember in years to e is the ‘gay wizard’ joke, I’ve e out ahead of Baroness Mary Warnock. Achievable goals: the first step to self improvement.Actually, I have wracked my mind and heart for what I ought to say to you today. I have asked myself what I wish I had known at my own graduation, and what important lessons I have learned in the 21 years that have expired between that day and this.I have e up with two answers. On this wonderful day when we are gathered together to ___lebrate your academic suess, I have decided to talk to you about the benefits of failure. And as you stand on the threshold of what is sometimes called ‘real life’, I want to extol the crucial importan ___ of i ___gination.These ___y seem quixotic or paradoxical choi ___s, but please bear with me.Looking back at the 21-year-old that I was at graduation, is a slightly unfortable experien ___ for the 42-year-old that she has bee. Half my lifetime ago, I was striking an uneasy balan ___ between the ambition I had for myself, and what those closest to me expected of me.I was convin ___d that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive i___gination was an amusing personal quirk that would never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension. I know that the irony strikes with the for ___ of a cartoon anvil, now.So they hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English Literature. A promise was reached that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parents’ car rounded thecorner at the end of the road than I ditched Ger ___n and scuttled off down the Classics corridor.I cannot remember ___ing my parents that I was studying Classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. Of all the subjects on this pla, I think they would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom.I would like to ___ke it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticise my parents for hoping that I would never experien ___ poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have sin ___ been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experien ___. Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to prideyourself, but poverty itself is ro ___nticised only by fools. What I feared most for myself at your age was not poverty, but failure. At your age, in spite of a distinct lack of motivation at university, where I had spent far too long in the coffee bar writing stories, and far too little time at lectures, I had a knack for passing examinations, and that, for years, had been the measure of suess in my life and that of my peers.I am not dull enough to suppose that because you are young, gifted and well-educated, you have never known hardship or heartbreak. Talent and in ___igen ___ never yet inoculated anyone against the capri ___ of the Fates, and I do not for a moment suppose that everyone here has enjoyed an existen ___ of unruffled privilege and contentment. However, the fact that you are graduating from Harvard suggests that you are not very well-acquainted withfailure. You might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for suess. Indeed, your con ___ption of failure might not be too far from the average person’s idea of suess, so high have you already flown.Ulti ___tely, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. So I think it fair to say that by any conventional measure, a mere seven years after my graduation day, I had failed on an epic scale. An ex ___ptionally short-lived ___rriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. The fears that my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both e to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.模板,内容仅供参考。
