You probably felt sorry and made up your mind to pay attention and never have daydreaming again. Most of us, from earliest school days, have been told that daydreaming is a waste of time."On the contrary," says L. Giambra, an expert in psychology, "daydreaming is quite necessary. Without it, the mind couldn't get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day. You can' t possibly do all your thinking with a conscious mind. Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time. Daydreaming then may be one way that unconscious and conscious states of mind have silent dialogues. " Early experts in psychology paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illnesses. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980s. Eric Klinger, a professor of psychology, is the writer of the book Daydreaming. Klinger says, "We know that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences and plan for our futures -- daydreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life. "Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep, which may be hard to understand. It' s easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine your sleep dreams carefully. Daydreams help you recognize the difficult situations in your life and find out a possible way of handling them.Daydreams cannot be predicted: They move off in unexpected directions which may be creative and full of useful ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams are a main source of creative energy. So the next time you catch yourself daydreaming, don' t stop. Just pay attention to your dream. It may be more important than you think.1. Daydreaming used to be considered___________.A. very simple and directB. unimportant or even harmfulC. a necessary part of thinkingD. the result of an unconscious mind2. In what way are daydreams different from sleep dreams?A. Daydreams are easier for us to understand.B: Daydreams are not so easy for us to control and direct.C. Daydreams help us to handle more difficult situations.D, Daydreams help to develop an unconscious mind:3. Professor Eric Klinger believes that _________.A. we may study our experiences just through our daydreamsB. daydreaming is one of the important ways that we recognize our livesC. we should be able to tell our futures by having daydreamsD. our fears and longings in life are shown in our daydreams4. These small dog-like animals have longbeen accused of killing farm animals. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained gods, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs, eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades (十个一组的) the number of people opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is brutal, has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation (对抗)between hunters and hunt saboteurs. Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere(打扰) with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox's smell, which the dogs follow.Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs(破坏分子)have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. A Labour Party Member of the Parliament, Milk Foster, is trying to get Parliament to approve a new law which will make the hunting of wild animals with dogs illegal. If the law is passed, wild animals like foxes will be protected under the ban in Britain.9. What is special about fox hunting in Britain?A. It involves(包含)the use of a deadly poison.B. It can be inferred from the passage that__________.A. killing foxes with poison is illegalB. limiting the fox population is unnecessaryC. hunting foxes with dogs is considered cruel and violentD. fox-hunting often leads to confrontation between the poor and the richDTo us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains. But actually the umbrella was not invented as protection against rain. Its first use was as a shade against the sun!Nobody knows who first invented it, but the umbrella was used in very ancient times. Probably the first to use it were the Chinese, way back in the eleventh century BC. We know that the umbrella was used in ancient Egypt and Babylon as a sunshade. And there was a strange thing connected with its use : it became a symbol of honour and authority. In the Far East in ancient times, the umbrella was allowed to be used only by royalty or by those in high office. In Europe, the Greeks were the first to use the umbrella as a sunshade. And the umbrella was in common use in ancient Greece. But it is believed that the first persons in Europe to use the umbrella as protection against the rain were the ancient Romans. During the Middle Ages, the use of the umbrella practically disappeared. Then it appeared again in Italy in the late sixteenth century. And again it was considered a symbol of power and authority. By 1680, the umbrella appeared in France, and lateron in England.By the eighteenth century, the umbrella was used against rain throughout most of Europe. Umbrellas have not changed much in style during all this time, though they have become much lighter in weight. It wasn't until the twentieth century that women's umbrellas began to be made, in a whole variety of colors.13. It does great damage to human beings' immune system, weakening resistance to disease and leading to death due to utter weakness. To this day, there are no existing drugs that can kill the AIDS virus. It is a deadlybattle between science and AIDS.This is only one side of the story. Although it cannot be cured, AIDS is preventable. For those who have not caught the disease, the knowledge of preventive measures seems to be the most powerful weapon at hand.Since the discovery of the first AIDS patient in 1985, the number of HIV carriers is an alarming rise in China and statistics show that young people are the more likely victims of AIDS. Nationwide there 214 million people between the ages of 13 and 22, most of whom are students. If no measures are taken to protect these young people, it is almost certain that the threat of AIDS will be very real to them. There has been a great deal of misinformation concerning the transmission of AIDS.One of the most misleading myths is that AIDS can be transmitted by casual physical contact such as kissing, shaking hands or sharing food container. Survey and investigations conducted in some universities and colleges show that half of those people questioned are not Clear about how AIDS is transmitted, not to mention how it is prevented. This is the driving force behind the State Education Commission's decision to spread awareness information among college students and later to high school students and primary school students.17.
