当代西方多元文化主义思潮的起源和发展(转载)••发帖者1983•1楼一、多元文化主义的特征多元文化主义(multiculturalism)最初作为一种文化政策出现在70年代以来的加拿大、澳大利亚等移民国家,以后逐渐遍及美国和其他一些移民国家。

80年代末、90年代初,随着东欧的剧变,苏联的解体以及民族主义浪潮的发展,多元文化主义越出了政策领域,而成为一种政治思潮,在西方移民国家发展起来。

多元文化主义,作为一种思潮,并没有统一的派别,内部有激进主义的多元文化主义、保守的多元文化主义、温和的多元文化主义等。

从国别上说,多元文化主义也应各国的情况不同而各有不同,如加拿大的多元文化主义和美国的多元文化主义就存在很大差别等。

由于不同思想家身处不同国家,所处语境各异,对多元文化的理解就五彩缤纷、多姿多彩。

因此,对于什么是多元文化主义也就不存在一个共同的定义。

不过,总体上看,多元文化主义在政治思想上的主要特征有下列这样几个方面:首先,少数民族的文化差异性。

多元文化主义政治思想主张少数民族和边缘群体的独立价值,主张文化认同和民族个性,要求主流文化或国家对其文化认同给予公共的承认。

多元文化主义者认为,人是深受其所生长的特定的文化环境的影响的,在他们独特的文化环境中,人们形成了其独特的文化认同,这种独特的文化认同对他来讲是生存之本。

文化少数民族在其产生和发展的过程中也形成了其独特的文化认同,所以不应忽视或泯灭文化少数民族的文化认同。

其次,主张少数民族的权利维护,多元文化主义政治思想主张各民族和种族之间的平等,反对民族歧视以及同质化的文化霸权,反对文化帝国主义。

多元文化主义者认为,文化之间是没有高低贵贱之分的,不同的文化代表了不同的意义及对好生活的不同理解,所以每一种文化都不是完美的,都不能把自己的认同强加于其他文化之上,把任何一种文化凌驾于其他文化之上,也不能用一种同质的文化来代替多元社会中多种文化共存的现实。

再次,主张各民族都有权参与国家的政治经济生活,同时发展和享用自己的文化传统;要求主流社会采取差异原则,赋予文化少数民族以更多的自由和权利。

到九十年代,由于争论的激烈程度,有人甚至把多元文化主义及相关的争论称为“文化战缘起研究对象研究一个问题,首要的是要对所研究对象有明确的认识,即问题是什么,接着才研究课题的意义、特征及局限性等相关的问题。

尽管多元文化主义一词近年来已被频频地使用,但如同“文化”、“全球化”这些高度使用却无公认的定义一样,多元文化主义的内涵至今未有一个清楚明晰的界定。

王希在《多元文化主义的起源、实践与局限性》一文中将多元文化主义的内涵析化,多元文化主义因不同领域的不同用途有不同的内涵,它“既是一种教育思想、一种历史观、一种文艺批评理论,也是一种政治态度、一种意识形态的混合体”[2]。

这种归纳法虽然全面,然而还是未能对多元文化下一个精确的定义,让人对其内涵有个简明扼要的把握。

共同点因此,在此基础上,王希得出这些用途的共同点,即“1、美国是一个多元民族和族裔构成的国家,美国文化是一种多元的文化;2、不同民族、族裔、性别和文化传统的美国人的美国经历是不同的,美国传统不能以某一个民族或群体的历史经验为准绳;3、群体认同和群体权利是多元文化主义重要内容,也是美国社会必须面临的现实。

”[3]显然,多元文化主义已不是纯粹的理论探讨,它成了教育、文艺、政治诉求的出发点和依据,从这个依据出发,目标指向元与元的平等,即所谓的“群体认同和群体权利”。
