The Love of BeautyThe love of beauty is an essential part of all healthy human nature. It is a moral quality. The absence of it is not an assured ground of condemnation, but the presence of it is an invariable sign of goodness of heart. In proportion to the degree in which it is felt will probably be the degree in which nobleness and beauty of character will be attained.Natural beauty is an all-pervading presence. The universe is its temple. It unfolds into the numberless flowers of spring. It waves in the branches of trees and the green blades of grass. It haunts the depths of the earth and the sea. It gleams from the hues of the shell and the precious stone. And not only these minute objects but the oceans, the mountains, the clouds, the stars, the rising and the setting sun---all overflow with beauty. This beauty is so precious, and so congenial to our tenderest and noblest feelings, that it is painful to think of the multitude of people living in the midst of it and yet remaining almost blind to it.All persons should seek to become acquainted with the beauty in nature. There is not a worm we tread upon, nor a leaf that dances merrily as it falls before the autumn winds, but calls for our study and admiration. The power to appreciated beauty not merely increases our sources of happiness---it enlarges our moral nature, too. Beauty calms our restlessness and dispels ourcares. Go into the fields or the woods, spend a summer day by the sea or the mountains, and all your little perplexities and anxieties will vanish. Listen to sweet music, and your foolish fears and petty jealousies will pass away. The beauty of the world helps us to seek and find the beauty of goodness.

A jobless man applied for the position of 'office boy' at Microsoft. The HR manager interviewed him then watched him cleaning the floor as a test.'You are employed' he said. 'Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you the application to fill in, as well as date when you may start.'The man replied 'But I don't have a computer, neither an email'.'I'm sorry', said the HR manager. 'If you don't have an email, that means you do not exist. And who doesn't exist, cannot have the job.'The man left with no hope at all. He didn't know what to do, with only $10 in his pocket. He then decided to go to the supermarket and buy a 10Kg tomato crate(板条箱,篓).He then sold the tomatoes in a door to door round. In less than two hours, he succeeded to double his capital. He repeated the operation three times, and returned home with $60.The man realized that he can survive by this way, and started to go everyday earlier, and return late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled everyday.Shortly, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.5 years later, the man is one of the biggest food retailers in the US.He started to plan his family's future, and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker, and chose a protection plan. When the conversation was concluded the broker asked him his email. The man replied,'I don't have an email.'The broker answered curiously, 'You don't have an email, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Can you imagine what you could have been if you had an email' The man thought for a while and replied, 'Yes, I'd be an office boy at Microsoft!' Last summer I picked up The Power of Now by Eckhart T olle for the first time, and at once something clicked. With incredibly lucid(明晰的), unadorned(朴素的) prose, he describes exactly how we perpetuate our own suffering in our minds, keeping our pain and worry alive with our repetitive thoughts about past and future. We expend a great deal of energy this way creating problems for ourselves, and making ourselves a problem, when what would actually free us is a return to awareness of the present moment (the only moment that truly exists). Although I'd read something like this before in other books —usually by prominent Buddhist teachers — it hadn't sunk in on more than an intellectual level. And I had certainly never known how to apply it in my day-to-day life. The key word he used was nonresistance. Which meant neither running away from discomfort nor fighting it. Instead of immediately commencing the usual struggle, he recommendedthat we allow the feeling, and give it no more attention than nonjudgmental observation. I honestly didn't know if I could I sit still and just be with an experience, even when the experience was wholly unpleasant, but it was worth a try. Could I refrain from jumping on the thought train and turning everything into a major issue? Could I break a lifelong, ingrained, unconscious habit? The answer turned out to be yes —when I'm paying attention! I'm a lot more conscious of my unconscious reactions now than I was, so when the intense anxiety possesses me, as it did when I was in the midst of packing for my latest move, I can sometimes catch myself in the act of resistance.I was in the car with an old and dear friend, on the way to what I had hoped would be a lovely Sunday brunch, when it seized me, violently, like a blindsided hostage. I was seasick with dread; my stomach knotted and my heart raced. The downtown streets looked ugly, squalid, and hostile. At first I tried to fight the feeling, then despaired at the thought that our outing was ruined.Suddenly I remembered Tolle's words: resist nothing.I relaxed into my discomfort. As if it were the most normal thing in the world. Okay, I decided, so I'm going to feel like this right now. I neither battled nor ignored the sensations, but simply allowed them to blow through my system like a minor typhoon, as my friend continued to tell me about her new house. By the time we were parking, they were already ebbing away. When we sat down at a table, it was hard for me to believe how I had felt only minutes before, and we did have a lovely brunch, after all.Who woulda thought it? Certainly not me. But that's the beauty of not thinking. We all have days when we feel down in the dumps. Whether it's getting out of bed on the wrong side, having a stressful patch at work, the miserable weather, or just an inexplicably bad mood – there are some easy tactics you can rely on to cheer up instantly. If the mood is derived from something within your control, fix it as soon as possible and you'll feel a huge weight lifted off your mind. If it's something you simply can't shake, do an end-around and boost your mood simply to spite it.Here are some simple end-around moves you can consider. More likely however, you'll catch onto the idea and create your own.Wearing your favorite sweaterIf you've woken up grouchy(不高兴的), put on your favorite sweater, your lucky socks, or that piece of jewelery your partner gave you. I guarantee you'll start the day in a better frame of mind. Wearing something which you have an emotional attachment to is almost as good as a hug!Baking a cakeI love rolling up my sleeves and getting busy in the kitchen, especially when the result is something sweet and delicious! Dig out your favorite recipe for a cake, brownies, cookies or some other treat –and get busy. Long before that delicious baking aroma fills your kitchen, you'll be cheerful again. If you wake up grouchy everyday, you may want to skip this one. A cake each day is not the answer unless you're giving them away!Walking outsideIf I'm in a ratty mood during the workday, it's usually because I've been at my desk writing for too long without moving around.I find that a brisk walk always cheers me up. Most of us need to improve our sedentary lifestyle. Get outside for half an hour, andwalk off some of that excess energy – for the sake of your physical and mental health. The beauty of natureAnother benefit to getting outside is to drink-in your surroundings. If you can, get to a park, meadow, wood or other green space. Look at the trees, the leaves, the grass, and drink in all the colours. There's always something beautiful to see – if we just take a few minutes to stop and look.Your friendsWhen you're feeling down, chatting to friends is a great way to perk(活跃起来) up. Even if you're feeling misanthropic, why not give someone a ring and arrange to meet up for a coffee? Or, write an email to someone you've been out of touch with for a while.Reading a novelSometimes, we all need to escape from life for a bit. I find getting into a great novel is an ideal way to do that. Curl up in your armchair with a book by one of your favorite authors and let yourself get absorbed in the story. For me, this works much better than trying to cheer myself up reading online – email and other distractions make it very hard to switch off mentally.Tidying up / declutteringAlthough chores feel like the last thing you want to do when you're in a bad mood, getting rid of mess and clutter will definitely make you feel happier. Our environment has a strong effect on how we feel – so make sure you're working (or relaxing) in a place that's comfortable to be in. The other bonus of getting on with some tidying is that you'll get a sense of achievement from it – a great spur to doing more, if you're feeling lethargic(昏睡的) or lazy.Taking a bathI often feel that I'm too busy to luxuriate in the bath – but I know that's not true. Taking some time out to really relax will make you far more motivated and productive, and a long soak in a bubble-filled bath is the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day for a good night's sleep.Being gratefulOne good way to feel happy is to list all the things you're grateful about. (This can also be quite humbling if you're feeling hard done by.) Sit down with a piece of paper and pen somewhere quiet, and write down all the things in your life that you want to say thank you for. They can be little or big, silly or profound.。

冬天逼近了,寒风夹着雪花向他袭来……That day he decreased the distance between him and the ship by three miles; the next day by two-for he was crawling now as Bill had crawled; and the end of the day found the ship still seven mailes away and him unable to make even a mile a day. Still the indian summer held on, and he continued to crawl and faint ,turn and turn about; and ever the sick wolf coughed and wheezed at his heels. His knees had become raw meat like his feet, and though he paddled them with the shirt from his back it was a red track he left behind him on the moss and stones. Once , glancing back, he saw the wolf licking hungrily his bleeding trail, and he saw sharply what his own end might be-unless-unless he could get the wolf. Then began as grim a tragedy of existence as was ever played-a sick man that crawled, a sick wolf that limped, two creatures dragging their dying carcasses across the desolation and hunting each other’s lives.

If you change your mind - from pessimism to optimism - you can change your life.Do you see the glass as half-full rather than half empty?Do you keep your eye upon the doughnut, ot upon the hole?Suddenly these cliches are scientific questions, as researchers scrutinize the power of positive thinking.Research is proving that optimism can help you to be happier, healthier and more successful.Pessimism leads, by contrast, tohopelessness, sickness and failure, and is linked to depression, loneliness and painful shyness. If we could teach people to think more positively,it would be like inoculating them against these mental ills.Your habits count but the belief that you can succeed affects whether or not you will.In part, that’s because optimists and pessimists deal with the same challenges and disappointments in very different ways. When things go wrong the pessimist tends to blame himself.“I’m not good at this.”“I always fail.”He would say. But the optimist looks for loopholes.Negative or positive, it was a self-fulfilling prophecy. If people feel hopeless they don’t bother to acquire the skills they need to succeed.A sense of control is the litmus test for success. The optimist feels in control of his own life.If thingsare going badly, he acts quickly, looking for solutions, forming a new plan of action, and reaching out forad vice. The pessimist feels like fate’s plaything and moves slowly. He doesn’t seek advice, since he assumesnothing can be done. Many studies suggest that the pessimist’s feeling of helplessness undermines the body’s natural defenses, the immune system. Research has found that the pessimist doesn’t take good care of himself.Feeling passive and unable to dodge life’s blows, he expects ill health and other misfortunes,no matter what he does. He munches on junk food, avoids exercise, ignores the doctor, has another drink. Most people are a mix of optimism and pessimism, but are inclined in one direction or the other. It is a pattern of thinking learned at our mothers’ knees. It grows out of thousands of cautions or encouragements, negative statements or positive ones.T oo many “don’t” and warnings of danger can make a child feel incompetent, fearful and pessimistic. Pessimism is a hard habit to break - but it can be done. You’ve had a problem, you’ve thought about it till you were tired, forgotten it and perhaps slepton it, and then flash! When you weren’t thinking about it suddenly the answer has come to you,as a gift from thegods.Of course all ideas don’t come like that, but the interesting thing is that so many do,particularlythe most important ones. They burst into the mind, glowing with the heat of creation. Howthey do it is a mystery.Psychology does not yet understand even the ordinary processes ofconscious thought, but the emergence ofnew ideas by a “leap in thought” is particularlyintriguing, because they must have come from somewhere. For the moment let us assume thatthey come from the “unconscious”.This is reasonable, for the psychologists use this term todescribe mental processes which are unknown to the subject, and creative thought consistsprecisely in what wasunknown becoming known. It seems that all truly creative activity depends in some degree on these signals from theunconscious, andthe more highly intuitive the person, the sharper and more dramatic thesignals become. But growth requires a seed, and the heart of the creative process lies in the production of theoriginal fertile nucleus from which growth can proceed. This initial step in all creationconsists in the establishment of a new unity from disparate elements, oforder out ofdisorder, of shape from what was formless. The mind achieves this by the plastic reshaping,so as to form a new unit, of a selection of the separate elements derived from experience andstored in memory. Intuitions arise from richly unified experience. This process of the establishment of new form must occur in pattern of nervous activity in thebrain, lying below the threshold of consciousness, which interact and combine to form morecomprehensive patterns. Experimental physiology has not yet identified this process, for itsmethods are as yet insufficiently refined, but it may be significant that a quarter of the totalbodily consumption of energy during sleep goes tothe brain, even when the sense organs are atrest, to maintain the activity of ten million brain cells. These cells, acting together as a singleorgan, achieve the miracle of the production of new patterns of thought. No calculatingmachine can do that, for such machines can “only do what we know how to design them to do”,and these formative brain processes obey laws which are still unknown. Can any practical conclusions be drawn from the experience of genius? Is there an art ofthought for the ordinary person? Certainly there is no single road to success; in the world oftheimagination each has to find his own way to use his own gift. I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but to my work,a life’s work in the agonyand sweat of the human spirit, not for glory and least of all for profit, but to create out of thematerials of the human spirit something which did not exist before. So this award is only mine intrust. It will not be diffcult to find a dedication for the money part of it commensurate withthe purpose and significance of its origin. But I would like to do the same with the acclaim too,by using this moment as a pinnacle from which I might be listened to by the young men andwomen already dedicated to the same anguish and travail, among whom is already that onewho will some day stand here whereI am standing. Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that wecan even bear it. There are no longer problems of the spirit. There is only the question: Whenwill I be blown up? Because of this, the young man or woman writing today has forgotten theproblems of the human heart in conflictwith itself which alone can make good writing becauseonly that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat. He must learn them again. He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget itforever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths ofthe heart, the old universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed, loveand honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Until he does so, he laborsunder a curse. He writes not of love but of lust, ofdefeats in which nobody loses anything ofvalue, of victories whthout hope and, worst ofall, without pityor compassion. His griefs grieveon no universal bones, leaving no scars. He writes not of the heart but ofthe glands.Until he relearns these things, he will write as though he stood among and watched the end ofman. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simplybecause he will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from thelast worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there willstill be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to acceptthis. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because healone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capableof compassion and sacrfice and endurance. The poet’s, the writer’s duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help manendure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and prideand compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet’svoice need not mere ly be the record of man,it can be one of the props, the pillars to help himendure and prevail.。
