The author
Geroge Orwell was a British author and journalist. His work is marked by keen(敏锐的)intelligence and wit(才智), a profound(渊博的) awareness of social injustice, an intense, revolutionary opposition to totalitarianism,(极 权主义) a passion for clarity in language and brief in democratic socialism.(民主社会主义)
• Mr.Jones tries unsuccessfully to retake Animal Farm with some other farmers after their animals start acting badly as well. Snowball becomes hero.
• After a disbute over building a windmill, Napoleon has puppies took attack Snowball and chase him from the farm. Napoleon become leader and still building windmill. • To build windmill, Napoleon sells hen's eggs, which casuses animals angry but failed because of nine dogs. • The pigs soon being trading with humans, and sleeping in the house, and the animals farms rules mysteriously keep seeming to change.
The characters
Old Major
An old boar(公猪) whose speech rouses the animals into rebellion. His philosophy is called Animalism. He teaches the animals the song of "Beats of England".

• Considered perhaps the twentieth century's best chronicler(年代记编者) of English culture, Orwell wrote fiction, polemical (有争辩的) journalism, literary criticism and poetry. He is best known for the dystopian(反乌托邦的) novel Nineteen Eighty-Four and the satirical(讽刺的) novel Animal Farm.
Squealer A porker pig(食用猪) who becomes Napoleon's mouthpiece.(喉舌) Boxer A cart-horse(拉货车的马) and hard worker. He keeps believing that hard work solves all problems.

• Boxer was wounded on the battle with human. Napoleon sends Boxer to take to the veterinary(兽医) surgeon.But in reality, Napoleon has sold his most loyal and long-suffering worker for money to buy himself whisky.
• Snowball A young boar who becomes one of the rebellion's most valuable leaders. He draws complicated plans for the windmill.(风车)
• Napoleon A boar, who, with Snowball, leads the rebellion aganist Jones. He systematically takes over the farm and becomes undisputed(无可争议的) tyrant.(暴君)
• In the novel, the overthrow(推翻) of the human oppressor(压迫者) Mr. Jones by a democratic coalition(联合) of animals quickly gives way to the consolidation(统一 ) of power among the pigs. Much like the Soviet intelligentsia(知识分子), the pigs establish themselves as the ruling class in the new society.
• Years pass, and the pigs start to resemble humans. The Seven Commandments becomes a single phrase: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others". Napoleon holds a dinner party for the pigs and local farmers. He restores the name "The Manor Farm". As the animals look from pigs to humans, they realise they can no longer distinguish between the two.
Seven Commandments
The original commandments are:
1.Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
2.Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. 3.No animal shall wear clothes. 4.No animal shall sleep in a bed. 5.No animal shall drink alcohol. 6.No animal shall kill any other animal. 7.All animals are equal.
The background
• The book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalin era in the Soviet Union.
• Animal Farm allegorizes(比喻) the rise to power of the dictator Joseph Stalin.

• Animals become owner of the farm. They work hard and obey the Seven Commandments. The pigs soon show their own greed by keeping the entire apple crop and milk for themselves as reward for supervising the farm.
Seven Commandments
The changed commandments are as follows, with the changes bolded: 1.No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets. 2.No animal shall drink alcohol to excess. 3.No animal shall kill any other animal without cause. Eventually, these are replaced with, "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others", and "Four legs good, two legs better!"

The Plot of Animal Farm
However, the leaders ——pigs took advantage of new system to benefit themselves. They slept on the bed and drunk milk. The two leaders-Snowball and Napoleon wanted to be the only leader. Snowball was driven out because Napoleon let some fierce dog to chase him. And then Napoleon declared Snowball was spy and the enemy of Animal Farm. In the past, Snowball put forward to build windmill and Napoleon push others to build it since Snowball’s departure. Though it was wrecked twice but it finally was accomplished through years of hard work.

When Major dies, two young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, assume com mand and consider it a duty to prepare for the Rebellion.
