WC ≠厕所
被问到WC含义时，中国学生几乎都回答： “公共厕所”。但WC全称却是water closet， 意同lavatory，指的是抽水马桶。英语中表达 厕所的单词有很多，在英式英语中，私人住 宅中的厕所称为the lavatory、toilet，公共场 所的厕所称为the Gents／the Ladies；美式 英语中，私人住宅中的厕所称为the lavatory、 toilet或bathroom，在公共建筑物中的称为 the washroom或rest room。
可见，随处可见的“WC”标识本意不是 公共厕所，而是指在私人家庭里面的抽水马 桶并且是过了时的旧式用法。

QS：实施食品质量安全市场准入制度的食品，出厂 前必须在其包装或者标识上加印（贴）QS标志。 没有QS标志的，不得出厂销售。
在一般公众场所，厕所向例以性别区分，男用的多 写上men，或gent’s，女用的则写上women或 ladies‘。所以在外国人口中，WC一词基本已消 失；但在很多以英语为基础外语的地方却还保留 着，因为易于上口，一听之后便不会忘记，这可
以算是语言上的一种特色。
WC词义本身与Toilet区别不大，但是从修辞上说， 前者给人的印象是简陋、不太卫生，而后者非但 有洁净、舒适的感觉，而且还可以在里面梳妆打 扮。Toilet这个词来源于法语，就法语“香水”一 词（l’eaudutoilet）也和Toilet有关，可见还是 很有高雅的感觉。文雅的翻法把Toilet译作“公共 洗手间”。

wc 很早以前，厕所Toilet里都有水箱water closet，人们一提到water closet就想到了toilet，
因此water closet就成了toilet的代名词。后来为了方便，人们就用water closet的开 头字母W.C.来代替toilet。 但wc是一种很粗俗的表达方式（相当于中国乡村常在厕所中标“大便处”“小便处”）， 是英美等国一二百年前使用的，现在一般不用WC，而使用TOILET，Bathroom， Restroom(Am)等较文雅的词。在中国传入多年，许多中国人都知道WC是公共厕所的 英文简称，但实际上此缩写在英文国家根本就不使用。取而代之的是Toilet 或者其他单 词，所以真正讲英文的人到了中国却不知道此缩写代表什么意思。 在美国，绝对没有 人使用这个缩写的。一般称为，Restroom 或者 Bathroom，有些地方也用 Washroom。在中国用 WC 来代表厕所，可以说是中式英语的一种变异。因此建议中 国人，在中国，用中文，这样就可以避免这种不伦不类的现象发生了。
