Impressive.BOn a steamy July day in Bayonet Point, Florida. Gene Work and his brother-in-law, Mark Rouco, were renewing Gene’s lawn. It had grown brown and patchy in the heat, and the homeowners’ association had threatened to heavily fine him if the situation wasn’t improved. The new sod(草皮)was sitting in the driveway on four pallets, but the job was slow-going. Gene, then 40, wasn’t feeling right. He went inside to take a break and collapsed on the couch, clutching his chest. His wife, Melissa Work, called 911 quickly.Even though he was staring down death, Gene had one thing on his mind: that lawn. If the sod wasn’t put down that day, it would die. “While he was having his heart attack, literally in and out or consciousness, he kept begging me to have it put down because he didn’t want it to go to waste,”Melisa wrote in a Facebook post.Soon Pasco County Fire Rescue arrived and took Gone and Melisa to the hospital, leaving Rouco behind to tackle the yard. Within an hour, he had managed to remove the old grass. He was about to lay the new sod, which he feared would take him well into the night, when two emergency vehicles appeared. Seven men —the same ones who had treated his brother —got out. Gene had told them how badly he’d wanted to get the sod down, so they had returned to help. The job was done in under two hours.Meanwhile, Gene had surgery to insert stents(支架)in his heart, alleviating a potentially deadly blockage(堵塞). He’s home now, fully recovered —and enjoying his beautiful lawn. The Works are sill amazed that those EMTs(Emergency medical technician)went above and beyond their job description. “These men,” Melisa told tampabay. com, “saved Gene’s life, and then came back to save his grass. That’s just so awesome.”24. Why did Gene want to renew his lawn?A. It was in bad condition.B. He was fined by the association.C. The sod grew too slowly.D. He disliked the color of the lawn.25. The seven men(EMTs)returned in order to ________.A. perform their dutiesB. help with Gene’s lawnC. check Gene’s houseD. send Gene back from hospital26. What does the underlined word “alleviating” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A. remove.B. cause.C. ease.D. expand.27. Which of the following best describes EMTs?A. energetic.B. helpful.C. honest.D. devoted.CThere’s a blue house in central Florida that’s hard to miss. It’s somewhat famous among people who live nearby —it’s painted to look like “Starry Night”, the iconic painting by Vincent van Gogh —but not everyone is a fan of the larger-than-life artwork.“We had not originally intended to paint the house like this,” Nancy Nemhauser, who lives there with her husband, Lubomir Jastrzebski, and their adult son, told TODAY. They started by painting the wall that runs outside of their home, because it was “in disrepair” and they wanted it to look nice. The couple said they even asked permission from the city to paint the wall, and were told it was OK.“So we went ahead and started having the wall painted by an artist who has his work shown throughout South America,” Nemhauser said. They chose Van Gogh because their son, who has autism(自闭症), is a fan —and they hoped that the mural would come in handy if he ever wandered far from home.“God forbid he were to be in a situation where he did not have the ability to tell people his address clearly. We’re hoping that he would have the ability to at least say that he belongs at the Van Gogh house,”Nemhauser said. The couple added that their son loves the look of the house. “There’s some magical connection I think between Van Gogh and autistic kids, because Van Gogh was possibly also autistic,”Jastrzebski said. After the couple painted the wall, they got a citation(传票)from the city stating that the wall painting was considered graffiti(涂鸦), and that the wall must match the house. That’s when they decided to paint the entire house to look like “Starry Night”—knowing that’s not quite what the city had in mind, but confident that they weren’t breaking any law.Since then, they’ve been fined $10, 600. In February, they filed a federal lawsuit against the city, claiming the city is violating their right to freedom of expression.Neither Mount Dora city officials nor their lawyer would comment on the issue. But in February, they did say in a statement that they were trying to “preserve the residential character of our neighborhoods”, and that the house “may present a distraction to safe vehicle operation along the street which fronts the home”.Nemhauser and Jastrzebski add that many neighbors love the house, and thousands of people have signed an online petition(请愿)in support of keeping the painting. While both sides are in settlement talks, the fate of the mural is still up in the air. The family said they were ready to battle for what they believe in.28. But why some travel far and wide while equally good ones has been a mystery? Now a team of computer scientists has used an epidemiological model to simulate(模仿)how ideas move from one academic institution to another. The model showed that ideas originating at famous institutions caused bigger “epidemics”than equally good ideas from less famous places, explains Alison Morgan, a computer scientist at the University of Colorado Boulder.“This implies that where an idea is born shapes how far it spreads,” says senior author Aaron Clauset. Not only is this unfair —“it reveals a big weakness in how we’re doing science,” says Simon DeDeo, a professor of social and decision sciences at Carnegie Mellon university, who was not involved in the study. “There are many highly trained people with good ideas who do not end up at top institutions. They are producing good ideas, and we know those ideas are getting lost,”DeDeo says. “Our science, our scholarships, is not as good because of this.”The Colorado researchers first looked at how five big ideas in computer science spread to new institutions. They found that hiring a new faculty member accounted for this movement a little more than a third of the time —and in 81 percent of those cases, transmissions took place from higher- to lower-prestige(声望)universities. Then the team simulated the spread of ideas using an infectious disease model and found that the size of an idea “epidemic” depended on the prestige of the originating institution. The researchers’ model suggests that there “may be a number of quite good ideas that originate in the middle of the pack, in terms of universities.” Clauset says. There is a lot of good work coming out of less famous places, he says: “You can learn a huge amount from it, and you can learn things that other people don’t know because they’re not even paying attention.”32. How did the scientists carry out their research?A. By making use of a model.B. By analyzing previous data.C. By comparing different results.D. By interviewing different people.33. According to Simon DeDco, What can we infer in Paragraph3?A. All the people with higher education have good ideas.B. Some scholarships aren’t given to the right people.C.
