乍看之下，它们与海地伏都教的击鼓与亮色运用，以及在日本寺庙中僧人的完美冥想不怎么相似，甚至在仪式中所穿的衣服，所使用的道具，所做的姿势都不尽相同。
但除了可见的不同之外，每个实践者与他们的仪式之间都存在着更深的联系。
这些是仪式所引起的联系。
即便是对那些毫无魔法背景的人，“仪式”这个概念对于要了解什么是魔法以及魔法师是做什么的也是极为重要的。
对大多数现代美国人而言，所接触的魔法是来自于星期六早上的动画片，甚至是星期天早上在教会讲坛中看到的拙劣模仿，但魔法仍是包括了姿势，语言，特别物件，和奇怪的行为。
这些思维习惯是基于现实中的魔法，虽然除了仪式之外，魔法还包括了很多，但仪式在世界上所有的传统中都是构成魔法技巧的核心。
我们可以说仪式是象征性的行为。
象征物——这个词打开了哲学的一大半主要问题——是指意指其他的事物；它确定了—种关系，—种在象征物及所象征物品之间含义的关系。
一根手指指向月亮并不是指月亮自身，但同样的，如果手指并没有指向哪里，那就又是不一样的意思了。
所以，象征物既不是所想象征的东西，也不是其自身。
它具有另外一层含义，其存在于我们称为领域或世界或意识的地方。
人类是具有象征性的生物；我们的语言，我们的社会结构，构成我们对世界理解的图像与概念，都是象征性的。
我们对世界自身的感知，是经过我们的感观、我们的大脑结构以及我们的思绪过程的，它们只不过是我们外在真实的象征。
如果仪式是象征性的行为，那么人类中的绝大多数的活动都是仪式——这事实上的确是真的，花点时间观察别人，你就能够理解。
当然，绝大多数时候，每日生活的仪式是以习以为常，半意识的方式进行着的。
我们在交谈时，不会考虑声音与想法之间相联系的抽象与象征的性质，我们会握手，而不会想到这个举动曾表示双方间没有携带武器。
但在象征与含义之间的微妙关系仍然存在，它们常常在难以预料的范围内塑造着人的经历与举止。
当学习仪式和相关含义的关系，并有意使用后，整个范围的可能性都打开了。
这些可能性包括魔法的大多数方法。
虽然，世界上的魔法传说包括不同器具。
但技巧、方法、象征学和象征行为的使用——即为仪式——形成了魔法工具包中最重要的元素。
仪式的掌握或许是开始使用人类意识潜能的最重要的方法，并超越现今何谓人类的界限。
经验的模型在开始仪式魔法的学习之前，有至少—个大障碍需要克服的。
那个障碍是建立在对于世界的现代认知。
我们不像许多非西方文化的学生那样，成长时所灌输的概念是将魔法认作理所当然的。
在现代西方所教授的世界观中，并没有给魔法存在的空间。
在过去的几世纪里，许多作品都想方设法将不真实的信息融入到魔法中，将其逼入现代西方世界观的角落。
其中比较普遍的就是以心理学重新诠释魔法，其中还伴随着荣格的原型理论；另一种是曾经更为流行的说法，它假定某种尚未发现的能量或物质是魔法的媒介。
这种理论有一定正确性。
但同时，如果要以不同的角度来看的话，还有很多地方需要说明：学习用另—个角度来看世界——魔法的角度。
如果要这么做，就必须记住我们过去理解的世界模型的确就是一种模型。
它们是现实地图中的—部分，而并不是现实自身。
科学唯物主义的模型是最适合理解物质与能量之间相互作用的地图，但它并不适合作为许多其他目的的地图。
要想用它来理解魔法或者生命之余的相关，就像是想要用高速公路的地图来理解地形或植被格局。
这并非只是这张地图的—个弱点；人类经验的世界比任何单张的地图，任何单套的理论，都要来得复杂。
在开始以魔法观点来思考经验世界之前，也要知道一张地图到另一张地图的转换是一种令人不安的经历，有时会很令人烦恼。
目前各种极端的信仰系统都在我们的社会中宣称是绝对的真理。
面对一个世界完整的版本是没有地图能容纳的——整个宇宙是无法被人类思想所理解的—要逃离到另一个能安抚自我且确保事实的信仰系统是非常容易的，无论该系统是否是抽象的现代科学的唯物主义，还是某些宗教教义的专横戒律。
但，最终，保证绝对的都是谎言，—种贬低信奉者的谎言。
同样的，我们在这里探索的世界也只是一个模型，适于人类经验的特定区域，而不怎么使用其他的。
在任何感观真实中，它自身并不是真理，将其那样认作只会浪费其多数的潜在可能。
相似地，广泛的物品和生物在那个模型中扮演着角色——生物阶层与行为模式，元素与世界，天体与轨迹，灵体与天使，以及力量的为字——它们并不比选举和GDP真实；它们只是描述我们每日所经历到的世界微妙面。
而如果你要问它们是否存在的话，就像阿雷斯特．克劳利所说的，宇宙运作得就像他们的确存在—样。
知道了这些之后，我们就可以开始进入魔法之地的冒险。
我们将进入金色黎明的创建人与熟练者都甚少触及的实践方法；这些方法的魔法理论与哲学很少在组织中讨论，在这一领域的方法，少数后继的组织能提供更详细的信息。

在探索金色黎明魔法的世界模型中，就会遇到卡巴拉的内容，以及新普拉图哲学的哲学家与神话。
关于它们的内容很容易就能填满一本书，但它们所包含的却只有一少部分是与仪式魔法的实践相关的。
幸运的是，要接触世界的魔法模型还可通过另一个不同的途径：并非由古代传说或思想体系开始，而是从我们在每时每刻体验世界的现实。
我们所感知到的世界在现代西方文化中的世界地图里，主导的概念是，“真实世界”是完全由物质和能量构成的，而意识只是在称为人类大脑的肉团中发生的奇怪现象。
这对大多数现代人而言是常识，它其实是关于宇宙的一套高度专横的信仰：它一定是被教授的，因为只要将某些人所经历的平常事忽略掉，它就非常合情合理的。
我们需要暂时忘记对于什么是“真实”和什么不是的通常假设，从更基本的问题开始。
人类对宇宙这一复杂的事物而言有何种感知呢?我们在最基础的层次上感知到了什么?首先，我们有通过视觉、听觉、味觉、触觉和嗅觉得到的感知。
它们是现代思想归类为关于”真实世界”的信息。
第二，在现代英语中有难以讨论的感知，而在其他相似的文化中却可以。
如果你十足地甩双手，再将手握成杯状，如同手上拿着球—般，并缓慢地深呼吸，将双手缓缓地靠近并远离，你就能感受到这种经历的—个例子。
这种感觉似乎在某种程度上与物质感观很接近，很多事物都被这些更难以捉摸的感觉接受到——虽然不是全部一与在物质经验领域中的事物相关联；—个给予的物件，一个特别的地方，—个特定的人，会有种始终如一的“感觉”或“能量”，仿佛它们有—个—贯的物质外表似的。
第三，有些感知或多或少地具有感观形态——所说的话或写下的字，图像，等一但貌似它们与被感观感知到的世界无关。
这些感受会持续地更多或更少，仿佛是意识中奔跑的独自。
