These stones are characterized by natural texture and elegant shape. As a result, the Rockery looks vigorous, bold, simple and grand. By using traditional Chinese gardening techniques, the Rockery is characterized by imposing appearance, orderly layout and a good combination of hill and water. Together with the stream behind, it becomes a separate attraction.30 meters from north to south and 13 meters from west to east, the Rockery has a 4-meter-high main peak and a 3-meter-high side peak. There is a cave under the Rockery with an area of about 16 square meters, where visitors can take a short rest before they go inside the park. The dim cave also leads to the rear rockery surrounded by a stream. The former and the latter contrasts obviously but naturally. The cave of the Rockery is designed successfully with a large piece of stone arranged on the top and at the entrance, forming a vivid and imposing scene of suspending large stones. On the cave wall there are enough rifts which allow light and air to go into the cave where it is not too dark or humid. The Rockery is an excellent work of its kind in Jinan which has been highly praised by gardeners.Tortoise Rock: North of the Rockery is a winding path and a stone bridge. Then what comes into your eyes is a huge rock, called Tortoise Rock, standing among the bamboo, grass and flowers. The Tortoise Rock is characterized by graceful pose and natural texture, being a perfect Taihu Lake stone. 4 meters in height and 8 tons in weight, it derves the title "No.1 Famous Stone in Jinan". Taking a photo with this rock means longevity and auspiciousness.Jade Rinsing Spring: Go ahead and we see a clear rectangular pool enclosed by white marble railings. This is the Jade Rinsing Spring. Overflowing from a flat rock like a water curtain, when meeing a riprap, the spring splashes all over, pouring into the pool with cheers and laughters lingering in your ears. It is said that Li Qingzhao, a famous poetess in the Northern Song Dynasty, often dressed and made up herself at the spring when she lived here. The three Chinese characters "漱玉泉" were written by Mr. Guan Yousheng, once a famous painter and calligrapher in Jinan. There are different stories about the name of the spring. Someone belives that the spring is so named because it sounds like rinsing jade. Someone thinks that in ancient times, women's tooth was called "jade", and the poetess Li Qingzhao often dressed and made up at the spring, hence its name. Others believe that the spring derives its name from Li Qingzhao's famous poem collection Jade Rinsing Collection.Visitors often put coins into the pool. The other three Chinese characters "第一泉"(First Spring) were written by Wang Zhonglin, a calligrapher in the Qing Dynasty.Origin of the Baotu Spring:Surrounded by mountains and hills, the elevation of Jinan city proper is only around 20 meters, where the groundwater is very shallow. The spring water comes from the vast mountainous areas between the city proper and the Jinxiuchuan Reservoir, where the rocks are thick, pure limestones formed 400 million years ago. The limestone terrane tilts at a pitch of 30 degrees from south to north. Numerous subterranean streams flow toward Jinan city proper. The subterranean rocks north of the Darning Lake become much harder, blocking the subterranean water. Then the water is stored up here and becomes more and more. The old Jinan city is very low-lying, where some places are lower than the subterranean water surface. Then the subterranean water vents out through the earth's surface, becoming various springs. Most of the springs are concentrated on the south of the old city from west to east, including four major groups of springs: the Black-Tiger Spring, the Pearl Spring, the Baotu Spring and the Five-Dragon Pool.Varing greatly in size, the springs in Jinan are mostly rising springs, of which the Baotu Spring is the representative. The spring water bubbles up from the ground, rolling like huge wheels, presenting a magnificent scene. The spring pool is surrounded by ancient buildings of different hight strewn at random. Visitors can appreciate the spring from different angles. The water of the Baotu Spring is clear and sweet, good for making tea.
