Unit 1 Great Scientists李仕才一、阅读理解。

Life satisfaction is the way persons evaluate their lives and how they feel about their directions and options for the future. It's a measure of well-being and may be evaluated in terms of mood, satisfaction with relations with others and with achieved goals and self-concepts to cope with daily life. It's having a favorable attitude towards one's life as a whole rather than just an evaluation of current feelings. Life satisfaction has been measured in relation to economy, education, experiences, and residence, as well as many other topics.Life satisfaction can reflect experiences that have influenced a person in, a positive way. These experiences have the ability to motivate people to pursue and reach their goals. As a matter of fact, in these experiences there are two kinds of emotions that may positively influence how people understand their life. Hope and optimism both consist of emotional processes that are usually directed towards the reaching of goals. People who have higher life satisfaction are always full of hope for a better future; additionally, optimism is linked to higher life satisfaction, while pessimism is related to symptoms in depression. The psychologist, Yuval Palgi, studied the old-old-people who were primarily in their nineties. This subject group was found to have thought highly of their past and present, but they thought lower of their future. A large factor that was talked about in life satisfaction was intelligence. The experiments talk of how life satisfaction grows as people become older because they become wiser and more knowledgeable, so they begin to see that life will be better as they grow older and understand the important things in life more. But when they step into their nineties, future becomes a luxury to them.According to Seligman, the happier people are, the less they are focused on the negative. Happier people also have a greater tendency to like other people, which promotes a happier environment, which then correlates to a higher level of the persons' satisfaction with their life.1.What can we learn about life satisfaction from Paragraph 1?A. It can be easily measured through income and education.B. It includes a positive attitude towards people's entire life.C. It merely determines people's attitude towards the future.D. It has nothing to do with the evaluation of current feelings.2.What emotions have a positive effect on life satisfaction?A. Motivation and dream.B. Hope and depression.C. Optimism and pessimism.D. Hope and optimism.3.What was the attitude of most old-old towards their future?A. They were less hopeful about it.B. They thought highly of it.C. They felt satisfied with it.D. They were scared of it.4.What may be the best title for the text?A. Old People Have Much More Life SatisfactionB. Life Satisfaction—the Key to a Happier LifeC. Optimism Ensures Life SatisfactionD. Emotions Affect Life Satisfaction【文章大意】本文为议论文。

Unit 1 Great scientistsⅠ阅读理解A(2019·烟台诊断)Grandparents who help out occasionally withchildcare in their community tend to live longer than seniorswho do not care for other people, according to a study from Berlin,Germany.“Having no contact with grandchildren at all can negativelyimpact grandparents’ health. This link could be deeply rooted in our evolutionary past when help with childcare was important for the survival of the human species,”said Sonja Hilbrand, one of the researchers. The findings are drawn from data on more than 500 people over age 70. Overall, after accounting for grandparents’ age and general state of health, the risk of dying over a 20year period was onethird lower for grandparents who cared for their grandchildren, compared with grandparents who provided no childcare.Caregiving was associated with a longer life even when the care receiver wasn’t relative. Half of all childless seniors who provided support to friends or neighbors lived for seven years after the study began, while nonhelpers lived for four years on average.“Caregiving may give caregivers a purpose of life because they may feel useful for others and society. Caregiving may be thought also as an activity that keeps caregivers physically and mentally active,” said Professor Bruno Arpino.Arpino noted, however, that caregiving is not the only activity that can improve health and that too many caring responsibilities can take away from other beneficial activities like working, being in social clubs, or volunteering.“Children should take__into__account their parents’ needs, willingness, and desires and agree with them on the timing and amount of childcare,” he suggested.“It is very important that every individual decides for himself/herself, what ‘proper amounts o f help’ means,” Hilbrand said, adding, “As long as you do not feel stressed about the intensity(强度) of help you provide you may be doing something good for others as well as for yourself.”【解题导语】德国柏林一项研究发现,祖父母适当地帮忙照顾孙辈比不照顾孙辈的老年人寿命长。

Unit 1 Great Scientists一、阅读理解。

Animals use many tricks to hide from predators(捕食性动物).While different, they are all visual animals. Now scientists have uncovered a fish species that uses both visual and chemical disguise(伪装).Rohan Brooker, one of the researchers who made the discovery said that he first thought of the idea after reading about a species which takes on the smell of the plant that it eats. Thus, its predators, ants walk right over it.Since Harlequin Filefish are picky eaters that feed totally off the Acropora—a beautiful species of blue/purple coral,Brooker theorized that they too may be using a similar trick to fool their predators. To test his theory,Brooker's team acquired some filefish from the Great Barrier Reef and divided them into two groups. For the next four weeks, one group fed on their normal diet of the Acropora coral, while the other fed on the Pocillopora coral. In order to test if there was any difference in the way they smelled, the researchers did another experiment. They found the smells from the two groups were different. But there was still a question of whether the smell was strong enough to protect the fish from their natural predators. To test that,Brooker's team added a predatory species of cod(鳕鱼)to the mix.Sure enough, the cod that were placed in the tank containing the fish fed on the Pocillopora coral were immediately able to sense them.In contrast, the cod in the tank where the fish had been fed on their natural diet—the Acropora coral, appeared oblivious to their existence and instead spent much of their time inside the tank's caves. This confirmed the team's suspicion that the filefish have figured out how to give off the smell of the Acropora coral to avoid being detected by predators. While the smellbased disguise had been previ ously observed in some species of fresh water, this study was the first to prove that the fish's diet was the source of this disguise.Though the theory has only been tested on Harlequin Filefish,Brooker suspects that this kind of chemical disguise is fairly commonamong sea animals.Sure it gives a whole new meaning to the saying—“You are what you eat!”1.The underlined word “oblivious” in Paragraph 3 may mean “________”.A.ignorant B.sensitiveC.allergic D.cautious2.What statement may Brooker agree to?A.Freshwater fish all know the role of smell.B.Sea animals use smell to cheat their enemies.C.The smellbased disguise may work occasionally.D.Humans are really what kind of fish they eat.3.What is the passage mainly about?A.A way to fight against predators.B.A smell trick of all sea animals.C.A fish smells like the coral.D.Filefish in the Great Barrier Reef.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了一项关于Harlequin Filefish如何通过自身的伪装来抵御捕食性动物的研究。
