A laid-back lifestyle mean that resorts such as Destin are busy all year round.TransportMost holiday-makers arrive in Florida by air. There are major international airports at Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa. Unless you are staying at a holiday villa actually on one of the amusement parks, you will need to hire a car to make the most of your Florida holiday. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children.Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification (沙漠化). “Within10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in averagerainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable (可持续的) crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals. In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”By September2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant l million trees by 2028. In return, the government has offered more financial assistance for islanders to buy electric cars and will build a solar and wind-fuelled power plant to replace polluting generators.Unlike other nearby islands, Astypalea is not connected to Greece’s electricity providers. With only 3,000 rooms for visitors in small hotels or flats, tourism is still low-key. Many residents make a living the old-fashioned way: raising goats, keeping bees and fishing. The island wasselected for Volkswagen’s experiment after Nikos Komineas, the go-ahead mayor, contacted the transport ministry for help in finding an electric bus to try out on its rough roads. Most islanders sound keen on the project. Mr Komineas expects the number of private cars on Astypalea to fall by a third over the next five years. Its residents, he says, will get around on electric minibuses, which will be free, linked to a mobile-phone app and available round the clock. Some observers smell greenwashing in the project. A bid for a solar park that would generate half the island’s electricity within three years will not get under way before the tourist season ends. A single wind-fuelled engine will be set up only in 2026, assuming the licensing process goes smoothly. That is not normally the case in the Aegean, where islanders worry that tourists will go elsewhere if the view is spoiled by an engine 200 meters high. And even then, the solar and wind-fulled power unit is planned to cover only about 80% of summer demand. But it is a start.12.Why has Volkswagen signed the deal with the government?A.To control car prices. B.To help generate electricity.C.To promote public transport. D.To build a zero-carbon island. 13.What makes Astypalea different from other nearby islands?A.It has an aggressive leader. B.It is out of the national electricity network.C.It is a crowded tourist destination. D.It has various goats, bees and fishes. 14.The underlined word “green washing” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.A.an island with few tourists B.a process with little supportC.an engine with no polluting fuel D.a strategy with no meaningful changes 15.What does the author think of the project?A.It’s pioneering.B.It’s practical.C.It’s destructive.D.It’s costly. We have stepped into an era of excess information, with each “red spot” shown on the screen and every ring-tone sounded in our ears reminding us of the highlights that can’t be missed. This tired world is flooded with the fragmented pieces of news. 16 Here are Five ways to stop feeling overwhelmed by the news.Limit the time spent reading news17 One way to reduce the impact of the non-stop news headline cycle is to use screen-time trackers, available on IOS and Android, to limit the time you spend reading or watching the news on your mobile.Turn off push notificationsIf the urge is too strong to resist, then at least turn off your push notifications from news apps. 18 A 2016 study found that push notif ications “exerted a negative influence on cognitive function” through disruption to daily tasks.19Academic Hans Rosling refers to “Factfulness” as a means of keeping world news in perspective. If we focus on the bigger picture, such as the percentage of people living in extreme poverty halving in the past 20 years, it may be easier to remain optimistic. Rosling calls it “understanding as a source of mental peace”.Prioritise trusted news sources Eric Carlsson, a professor in media and communication studies, says: “There has been a crisis of knowledge and truth owing to fake news, much of which is spread on the unregulated platforms of social media.”20No news before bedResearch has shown that screen use before bed resets our internal clock and disrupts sleep. So reading the news onscreen before bed can make your mornings even more anxious and tiring. A.Read the good news.B.But is this really our fault?C.Then how to cope with the anxiety?D.Make sure you always stick to the fact.E.“Headline anxiety” is a growing problem.F.Find your news instead, through reliable publications.G.This can stop you from being upset with breaking events.二、完形填空(本大题共1小题)A trip to a bank's ATM machine is usually a common affair.
