My name is Lily and I'm a 5th grade student who just took the big English practice exam for our district. It was pretty tough, but I'll share my thoughts on some of the questions. Maybe it can help you prepare for the real test coming up.Let's start with the reading comprehension section. There was a long passage about this kid who visited his grandparents on their farm over summer vacation. Some of the vocabulary was really hard, like "quarry" and "lucerne". I had to use context clues to figure those out. The questions asked things like the main idea, what certain details showed about the characters, and identifying vocabulary words based on their use in the passage. My tip is to re-read the difficult sentences slowly and look for clues in surrounding sentences.Next up was the grammar section - my favorite! There were some easy ones like identifying parts of speech. But then it got trickier with things like parallel structure, verb tenses, and pronoun agreement. One question I got stuck on was whether touse "me" or "I" in a certain sentence. I guessed based on whether it was a subject or object, but I'm still not totally sure. For grammar, I think the best way to improve is to just practice a ton.Vocabulary was hard as usual. We had to pick definitions, fill in blanks, and identify prefixes/roots/suffixes. There were a bunch of random academic words that I'm pretty sure we haven't learned yet, like "ubiquitous" and "ameliorate". For vocab, I make flashcards with words, definitions, and examples to drill myself.Then we had a writing section where we had to respond to a prompt about our favorite book. We needed an introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs with reasoning and examples, and a conclusion restating our main point. Organizing writing is always challenging for me. I try to plan out my key points first before I start writing.Finally, there were some word conversions, like changing a verb into a noun. And we had to unscramble some sentences into the proper order. Those ones take a lot of practice identifying issues like verb tenses, coordinating conjunctions, modifiers, and so on.Overall, it was a tough test but I tried my best. English is hard because there are so many little grammar/vocabulary rules and exceptions to memorize. But I'm working really hard to improveby studying regularly, doing practice exercises, and learning from my mistakes.I really want to do well on the real Yangpu District exam coming up. Exams are stressful but I know the more I prepare, the more confident I'll feel. My dream is to get into a great middle school program that will put me on the path to a top university someday.
