2007年“专升本”试卷课程名称:大学英语考试时间:2007年月日姓名:准考证号:Part I Reading Comprehension(每小题2分,共40分) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.Question 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:When a magazine for high-school students asked its readers what life would be like in twenty years, they said: Machines would be run by solar power. Buildings would rotate so they could follow the sun to take maximum advantage of its light and heat. Walls would “radiate light”and “change color with the push of a button.”Food would be repla ced by pills. School would be taught “by electrical impulse while we sleep.”Cars would have radar. Does this sound like the year 2000? Actually, the article was written in 1958 and the question was “What will life be like in 1978?”The future is much too important to simply guess about, the way the high school students did, so experts are regularly asked to predict accurately. By carefully studying the present, skilled businessmen, scientists, and politicians are supposedly able to figure out in advance what will happen. But can they? One expert on cities wrote: Cities of the future would not be crowded, but would have space for farms and fields. People would travel to work in “airbuses”, large all-weather helicopters carrying up to 200 passengers. When a person left the airbus station he could drive a coin-operated car equipped with radar. The radar equipment of cars would make traffic accidents “almost unheard of”. Does that sound familiar? If the expert had been accurate it would, because he was writing in 1957. His subject was “The city of 1982”.If the professionals sometimes sound like high-school students, its probably because future study is still a new field. But economic forecasting, or predicting what the economy will do, has been around for a long time. It should be accurate, and generally it is. But there have been some big mistakes in this field, too. In early 1929, most forecasters saw an excellent future for the stock market. In October of that year, the stock market had its worst losses ever, ruining thousands of investors who had put their faith in financial foreseers. One forecaster knew that predictions about the future would always be subject to significant error. In 1957, H. J. Rand of the Rand Corporation was asked about the year 2000, “On ly one thing is certain,” he answered. “Children born today will have reached the age of 43.”1. High-school students’answers to “What would life be in 1978? ”sound _________.A) accurate B) imaginative C) correct D) OK2. According to the writer, forecasting is fairly accurate in________.A) politics B) science C) sociology D) economy3. Which of the following statements does not confirm with the writers comment on futurestudy?A) Predictions should be accurate.B) Professionals sometimes sound like high-school students.C) There have been some big mistakes in the field of economic forecasting.D) Predictions about future would always be subject to significant errors.4. The present passage was most probably written _______.A) just before 2000 B) in 1958C) after 1982 D) in 19575. H. J. Rand's prediction about the year 2000 shows that________.A) it is easy to figure out in advance what will happenB) it is difficult to figure out in advance what will happenC) only professionals can figure out in advance what will happenD) very few professionals can figure out in advance what will happenPassage TwoQuestion 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Humans have long been studying the flight of birds and trying to imitate it. Not until the twentieth century did engineers fully understand the principles of flight that birds have been using for millions of years.Birds are adapted in their body structure, as no other creatures, to life in the air. Their wings, tails, hollow bones, and internal air sacs(气囊) all contribute to this great faculty. These adaptations make it possible for birds to seek out environments most favorable to their needs at different times of the year. This results in the marvelous phenomenon we know as migration---the regular, seasonal movement of entire populations of birds from one geographic location to another. Each year with great regularity most species of birds return to their summer homes, court(求偶) and choose mates, build their nests, lay eggs, and rear their young. In the late summer and fall they acquire their new plumage(羽毛). Then they join with others of their kind in large and small flocks, feeding and storing up fat in their bodies. Thus they prepare for the hardships of winter ,whether they remain in the cold northlands or make the strenuous journey to the south.6.The best title for this passage would be ______.A. Principles of FlightB. How birds flyC. The Annual Migration of BirdsD. The Body Structure of Birds7.The main idea of this passage is that _______.A. birds are built the same as other creaturesB. birds are built to flyC. birds need to migrate to surviveD. birds need to be told when to migrate8.It can be inferred from the second paragraph that _______.A. birds’ migration is generally without purposeB. birds’ migration is merely out of their habitsC. most birds travel regularly for a change in their lifeD. birds are able to look for situations favorable to their existence9.Birds feed and store fat in their bodies ______.A. for use in rearing their youngB. for use in winterC. to be used when they return next summerD. to be used on their way south10.Which of the following is implied by the passage?A. The migration of birds is a “social” undertaking.B. Each individual bird has its own pattern of migration.C. All birds fly south for the winter.D. Different kinds of birds join together in their migration.Passage ThreeQuestions 11 to 20 are based on the following passage:If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington(1876-1947), concluded from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer.Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.Fall is the nest-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.11. According to the passage, man’s intelligence_____________________.A) stays the same throughout the yearB) varies from day to dayC) changes with seasonsD) changes from year to year12. Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have_________________.A) some effect on most people's intelligenceB) a great effect on everyone's intelligenceC) some effect on a few people's intelligenceD) no effect on most people's intelligence13. Ellsworth Huntington’s conclusion was based on__________________.A) variations of his own mental abilities from season to seasonB) the results of research done by him and other scientists among peoples in differentclimatesC) detailed records of temperature changes in different placesD) detailed records of different ways of thinking among peoples in different climates14. Why does the author say summer is a good time to take a long vacation fromthinking?___________________A) Because a long vacation in summer helps to improve people’s mental power.B) Because summer is a good time for outdoor activities.C) Because mental exertion in the summer heat taxes too much of people’s energy.D) Because people tend to be less creative during summer.15. The central idea of this passage is_________________________.A) man’s mental abilities change from season to seasonB) man’s intelligence varies from place to placeC) man should take a long vacation in summerD) if you want to do creative thinking, go to a cool placePassage FourQuestion 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:Most students have little interview experience. The interview should hold little terror. If you are still nervous, help is at hand, your Careers Service will arrange practice interviews andfirms often advertise for mock interviewees and will pay you for the privilege. So you are about to have your first interview with the company of your dreams-how do you make a good impression? First, take care about your personal appearance. Interviewers will realize that you cannot afford expensive, quality clothes but they will not be impressed if your clothes are untidy and your hair is dirty. No one is too poor to afford soap. Second, don't forget the importance of body language. Make sure your entrance is deliberate(从容的) and shake the interviewer s hand firmly, but don't crush it. Maintain eye contact smile and try to relax.Initially, you will probably be asked open-ended questions relating to your application form, interests, courses and so on. This is your cue to begin talking, so don't answer in monosyllables and clam up. Make sure you answer the questions and don't be afraid of stopping to think before speaking. At the end of the interview you will probably be asked if you have any questions. It is advisable to have a list of them prepared, as intelligent queries(疑问) convey interest.Second round interviews can last anything between a few hours and two days spent at a hotel. Here your communication, leadership and social skills will be assessed. You might have to give a presentation chair a meeting and discuss various topics. In addition, companies often ask you to sit tests, some of which examine your mathematical and problem-solving skills, while others test your personal and communication skills. These interviews are intended to give you the opportunity to shine. Try to relax and enjoy it, you will not be at your best if you let your nerves take over. Just remember, if you are not accepted, then you probably would not have enjoyed the work anyway. Just try to make the most of the interviews.16. What kind of role may the students never play in the process of interview?A) Mock interviewee. B) Graduate trainee.C) Question asker. D)Chairman of a meeting.17. By saying “No one is too poor to afford soap”, the au thor probably suggest________.A) that interviewees are rich enough to buy soapB) that it's better to bring with them a beauty soap when being interviewedC) that interviewees should take a bathD) that buying soap is essential in job-bunting interviews18. Usually, the function of interviewer's open-ended questions relating to the applicationform isA) to acquire some personal detailsB) to dispel some doubtsC) to kill the timeD) to encourage the interviewee to talk19. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A) The purpose of the first interview is to gain a good first impressionB) The whole interview process usually consists of two rounds.C) The second round interviews last longer than the first one.D) If your application is refused, it is certain that you are incapable for the post.20. What is implied but not clearly stated in the passage is that________.A) personal appearance and body language help to obtain good impressionB) in the first round you'll be involved in answering as well as asking questionsC) good preparation, confidence and relaxation is vital to the success of job interviewD) the second round is to evaluate your abilities in communication leadership, mathematical and problem-solving as well as personal and social skillsPart II Vocabulary and Structure (每小题1分,共30分) Directions: There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. The topic was “Money & God.”The audience’s turnout was excellent. Almost everyone had some deep feelings about money and God —taken separately or united in various holy and unholy alliances. I struggled to bring these two ultimate subjects together in the same breath. One businessman wanted to make it simple. He said, “Money is God. Anything you can say about God, you can also say about money.”“What do you mean?”I responded. “Well, think of the traditional statements about God,”he said. “Okay. God is love. God is everywhere. God is infinite. God is all powerful,” I remarked. “That’ s it]” he said with delight. “Money is love. Money is everywhere. Money is infinite. Money is all powerful. People want to treat you as if they love you when you have lots of money. Everywhere I go there is money —an ATM machine or bank in every part of the world. Money is so powerful that we go to war and give up our lives for it. And, since money is abstract, we can create infinite amounts of it. Therefore Money is like God, Money is God.”This businessman was serious. I could see that he was deeply disturbed by his position. He was admitting an awesome truth that most people would not take seriously. Afterwards an older white-bearded gentleman came up to me and asked this question: “ With what do you buy your money?” I looked at him, just to make sure I understood what he said.Again he asked, “With what do you buy your money?”“I can only think of one good answer,” I said, “I buy my money with my life.”“Right!” he said. “You might win the game of life. I wish I had asked myself this question when I was much younger. I worked for money for so many years, not realizing that I was trading life for money.”“Don’t the bad guys always say, ‘ Your money or your life?’“I said. This old man had the clear eyes of a wisdom seeker, not those of a man lost in the money game. Perhaps, I thought half in jest, he had put away a good sum for his retirement, and was living well off of it. Yet, most older people that I knew were still obsessed with money even if they had enough. They had spent their youth fixated on it; such lifetime habits cannot be easily dropped. Ultimately, all of my investments start with how I use my time. Some say, “Time is money.” I say, “Life is the time we have, so use the time allotted well. You may not have any time to spare.”I may spend so much time working for life and health insurance payments, that I die earlier of stress-related disease. Such is life.26._____(tradition)teaching methods sometimes only succeeded in putting students off learning.正确答案:Traditional27._____(ally)against our common enemy is our only hope for survival.正确答案:Alliance28.The police ______(response)to emergencies in just a few minutes.正确答案:will respond29.The eight major industrial countries will have their ______(year)meeting in London.正确答案:yearly30.The proportion of the population who are over ______(retire)age has grown tremendously in the past few years.正确答案:retired31.Ms. Rice is one of the most______(power)persons in the Bush Administration.正确答案:powerful32.She has created a style of music that has______(delightful)audiences all over the world.正确答案:delighted33.I’m sorry to have ______(disturbance)you so late that night, but I really had no other choice.正确答案:disturbed34.The school has received______(vary)grants from the education department.正确答案:varied/ various35.Criticizing will only destroy a relationship and______(creativity)feelings of failure.正确答案:0createWho’s Afraid of Maths Anyway?(10) Scientists have tried to come up with biological explanations for the difference between boys and girls. However, none were convincing enough to explain the general picture. As one scientist points out, “There are slight genetic differences between the sexes at birth which may influence the subjects boys and girls choose. But the difficulty is thatby the time children reach school age, there are so many other influences that it is almost impossible to tell whether girls are worse at science and maths, or whether they’ ve been brought up to think of these subjects as boys’‘ territory’.”Statistics show that in mathematics, at least, girls are equal to boys. A recent report suggests that girls only stop studying mathematics because of social attitudes. One of the report’ s authors says, “While it is socially unacceptable for people not to be able to read and write, it is still acceptable for women to say that they are ‘ hopeless’ at maths. Our research shows that, although girls get marks which are as good as the boys’, they have not been encouraged to do so.”The explanation for the difference, which is apparent during the teenage years, goes as far back as early childhood experiences. From their first days in nursery school, girls are not encouraged to work on their own or to complete tasks, although boys are. For example, boys and not girls, are often asked to “help”with repair work. This encouragement leads to a way of learning how to solve problems later on in life. Evidence shows that exceptional mathematicians and scientists did not have teachers who supplied answers; they had to find out for themselves. A further report on maths teaching reveals that teachers seem to give more attention to boys than to girls. Most teachers who took part in the study claimed that they expect their male students to do better at mathematics and science subjects than their female students. All of this tends to encourage boys to work harder in these subjects, and gives them confidence and convinces them that they can succeed. Interestingly, both boys and girls tend to regard such “masculine” subjects like mathematics and science as difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls avoid mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons. Mathematics and science are mainly masculine subjects, and therefore, as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them up. Girls do not seem to want to be in open competition with boys. Neither do they want to do better than boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine and so, less attractive.adjust to mean realize instead of be concerned aboutaccidentally on the move be conscious of get used to a variety of36.When can you ______ your weakness and shortcoming?正确答案:be conscious of37.Joe went to visit the kindergarten______interviewing the famous scientist.正确答案:instead of38.It is known to all that the American nation is constantly______.正确答案:on the move39.We should______the scarcity of water on Earth.正确答案:realize40.All that the university students______ is how to find a good job after graduation.正确答案:are concerned about41.Since the environment is changing all the time, we must ourselves______it.正确答案:adjust to42.In the forest, we saw______plants.正确答案:avariety of43.Have you______the fast pace of life in Shanghai?正确答案:got used to44.George didn’ t______to hurt you when he told us your story.正确答案:mean45.He proved to be on the spot______.正确答案:AccidentallyPersonal interviewing is most effective, when all the people to be interviewed are located in a relatively small geographical area. Otherwise, the time and expense spent in traveling from one person to another makes this type of interviewing economically impractical. Personal interviewing is usually used when the information needed is too complex to be gathered by another technique. For example, a problem being studied may require the interviewer to probe beyond the more superficial answers that might be obtained with another method. It is sometimes assumed that personal interviewing is the most accurate of all survey research techniques. Although personal interviewing may be accurate, in many cases, human errors may prevent a researcher from obtaining valid results. Questions perceived by the interviewee as an invasion of privacy or threatening in any way will probably produce false or partially true answers. Also, since the interviewer must interpret the respondent’s statements, a certain amount of information loses results even though the respondent may be answering truthfully. In spite of the problems, at least two major advantages are provided by this research technique. First, the alertinterviewer can generally tell if the respondent is being truthful or if he or she is giving superficial or untrue responses. Second, the interviewer can rephrase questions, give more explanations, or probe more deeply if the initial questions do not produce the information desired. As a result, the information gleaned should be more accurate than that provided by interviews where no one is present to clarify questions or to interpret answers.46.It can be concluded from the passage that when all the people to be interviewed are located in a relatively big geographical area______.A.personal interviewing is most effectiveB.personal interviewing is economically impracticalC.personal interviewing is the only technique to get informationD.telephone interviewing may not be used正确答案:B47.Sometimes a researcher cannot get valid results because______.A.the information needed is too complex to be gatheredB.personal interviewing is the most accurate of all survey research techniques C.personal interviewing is not as effective as other research techniquesD.both interviewer and interviewee may make mistakes during the interview 正确答案:D48.In the second paragraph, the phrase “an invasion of privacy” most probably means______.A.an unpleasant conversationB.a challenge to interviewee’s professional skillsC.an interference with interviewee’s personal affairsD.an interference with interviewee’s hobby正确答案:C49.In the first sentence of the last paragraph, the pronoun “this”refers to a______.A.surveyB.questionC.answeringD.personal interviewing正确答案:D50.According to the last paragraph, one of the advantages of the personalinterviewing is______.A.the interviewer can ask the interviewee questions again in different waysB.the interviewer can ask the interviewee some personal questionsC.the initial questions do not produce the information desiredD.no one 5 s present to clarify questions正确答案:AI am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. I have managed to convince myself that if it weren’t for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried fill the country. But how realistic is the dream? Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in massive tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of fiats. Children become aggressive and nervous-cooped up at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated from the rest of the world. Strangely enough, whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other. Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitants of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to mm to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also tree that you are cut off from the exciting and important events that take place in cities. There is little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on an expedition to the nearest large town. The city-dweller who leaves for the country is often oppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet. What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds a feeling of isolation and constant noise batters the senses. But one of its main advantages is that You are at the gentler of things, and that life doesn’t come to an end at haft-past nine at night. Some people have found(or rather bought)a compromise between the two: they have expressed their preference for the “quiet life”by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind-they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages. What then of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring “morning”to the locals as they pass by. I’m keen on the idea, but you see there’s my cat, Toby. I’m not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass. I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty male down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric imitation-coal fire any evening.51.We get the impression from the first paragraph that the author______.A.used to live in the countryB.used to work in the cityC.works in the cityD.lives in the country正确答案:C52.In the author’s opinion, the following may cause city people to be unhappy EXCEPT______.A.a strong sense of fearB.lack of communicationC.housing conditionsD.a sense of isolation正确答案:A53.The passage implies that it is easy to buy the following things in the country EXCEPT______.A.daily necessitiesB.fresh fruitsC.designer clothesD.fresh vegetables正确答案:C54.According to the passage, which of the following adjectives best describes the commuters?A.Original.B.Quiet.C.Proud.D.Insensitive正确答案:D55.Do you think the author will move to the country?A.Yes, he will do so.B.No, he will not do so.C.It is difficult to tell.D.He is in two minds.正确答案:BClozeIn a telephone survey of more than 2000 adults, 21% said they believed the sun revolved(旋转)around the earth. 湖北专升本英语历年作文题目

湖北专升本英语历年作文题目English:As an English major student, I have learned a lot about different literary works, authors, and literary movements. One of the most influential literary works that has left a deep impression on me is George Orwell's "1984." This dystopian novel depicts a totalitarian society where the government controls every aspect of people's lives, from their thoughts to their actions. Through the protagonist Winston's journey of rebellion and self-discovery, Orwell highlights the dangers of totalitarianism and the importance of individual freedom. The novel's portrayal of surveillance, manipulation, and oppression serves as a stark warning against the erosion of personal liberties and the spread of misinformation. In today's increasingly digital age, where data privacy and surveillance are hot topics, "1984" resonates more than ever, reminding us of the fragility of democracy and the need to safeguard our rights and freedoms.中文翻译:作为一名英语专业学生,我学习了很多关于不同文学作品、作家和文学运动的知识。

I recently moved into the dormitory to be closer to the university campus, but I have been experiencing several issues that have made my living situation less than ideal.First of all, the cleanliness of the dormitory rooms is subpar. When I moved in, I found that the room had not been properly cleaned. The floors were dirty, and there was dust on the furniture. I had to spend time cleaning the room myself before I could unpack my belongings. In addition, the communal bathrooms are often dirty and unkempt, which is not only unsanitary but also unhygienic.Another issue is the lack of privacy in the dormitory. The walls are thin, and I can hear everything that my neighbors are doing. This makes it difficult for me to concentrate on my studiesor get a good night’s sleep. The common areas are also lacking in basic amenities, such as comfortable seating and study spaces. In conclusion, I believe that the university dormitories need to undergo significant improvements to provide students with a comfortable and conducive living environment. Some manufacturers of coffee makers are trying to take advantage of this trend by developing diminutive machines that brew(冲泡)smaller amounts of coffee. Two US appliance companies—Black & Decker, based in Towson, Maryland, and Toastmaster Inc. of Columbia, Missouri—have recently introduced “drip”coffee makers that brew one or two cup servings of coffee. Both of the products brew the coffee directly into a cup or mugs, eliminating the need for a separate carafe. Since many people make a pot of coffee in the morning but drink only a single cup, the new coffee makers should reduce the wasted coffee. Black & Decker’s Cup-at-a-Time costs $ 27, while Toastmaster’s Coffee Break Retails for $ 20. Black & Decker also makes a coffee maker that drips coffee directly into a carry-around thermal carafe. The carafe, a glass vacuum bottle, is supposed to keep the coffee fresh for hours. The product, called the Thermal Carafe Coffee-maker, comes with a built-in lid that opens during the brewing process and closes when it is completed. There are several models, including one that first under the counter, ranging from $ 60 to $ 110 in prices.21.According to the passage, a thermal carafe is necessary when the coffee is( ).A.brewedB.producedC.manufacturedD.preserved正确答案:D22.The advantage of” drip “coffee makers shown in the passage is that( ).A.they are much more economicB.they are more economicalC.they produce only one cup of coffeeD.they are more convenient to operate正确答案:B23.The word “it “in Sentence 3, Paragraph 3 probably refers to( ).A.the brewing processB.the built-in lidC.the coffee makerD.the model正确答案:A24.The main purpose of the passage is to introduce( ).A.a new trend of drinking coffeeB.the new coffee industryC.two US appliance companiesD.some new coffee makers正确答案:D25.Which of the following statements can be inferred from the passage?A.People drink up a pot of coffee in the morning.B.People used to drink coffee in larger quantities.C.Drip coffee makers are applied by everyone.D.The new coffee makers cost less than before.正确答案:BWe have the technology and ingenuity to reduce the threat of global warming today. Solutions that are already available will stimulate the American economy by creating jobs, saving consumers’money, and protecting our national security. By investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency, and increasing the efficiency of the cars we drive, we can take essential steps toward reducing our dependence on oil and other fossil fuels that cause global warming. Using energy more efficiently and moving to renewable energy(wind, solar, geothermal, and bio-energy)would significantly reduce our emissions of heat-trapping gases. The United States currently produces 70 percent of its electricity from fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas, oil, but only two percent from renewable sources. Since the burning of fossil fuels releases large amounts of carbon dioxide—the leading cause of global warming—but renewable energy does not, increasing the share of our electricity generated from renewable resources is one of the most effective ways to reduce global warming emissions. Cars and trucks are another significant source(25 percent)ofU. S. carbon dioxide emissions. A serious effort to address global warming must therefore reduce emissions from cars and trucks. Many technologies already existing can do this, while also creating new jobs in the U.S. automotive sector and other industries throughout the country. In addition, American consumers would save billions ofdollars on gasoline and reduce the dependence on foreign oil.26.Which of the following is NOT an available solution that can reduce the threat of global warming?A.Using energy more efficiently.B.Developing more renewable energies.C.Reducing emissions of heat-trapping gases.D.Increasing our dependence on oil and other fossil fuels.正确答案:D27.Which of the following is NOT a renewable energy?A.Wind.B.Solar.C.Fossil fuels.D.Geothermal.正确答案:C28.According to the passage, why is it suggested that our electricity be generated from renewable resources?A.Because they don’t release carbon dioxide.B.Because they are more effective.C.Because they are renewable.D.Because they are cheaper.正确答案:A29.In the U.S. what vehicles produce 25% of its carbon dioxide emissions?A.Cars and trains.B.Motorcars and buses.C.Cars and trucks.D.Motorbikes and lorries.正确答案:C30.What can we learn from the passage?A.The global warming problem has been solved.B.The prospect of renewable energies is promising.C.Americans will reduce the amount of cars and trucks.D.Half of the electricity in America is generated from renewable resources.正确答案:BPeople often say that the Englishman’s home is his castle. They mean that the home is very important and personal. Most people in Britain live in houses rather than flats, and many people own their homes. This means that they can make them personal, and change them in any way they like. Most houses have a garden, even if it is a small one, and the garden is usually loved. The house and the garden are the private space of a person. In a crowded city a person knows that he or she has a private space which is only for him or her and for invited friends. People usually like to mark their space. If you are on the beach you may have spread your towels around you; on the train you may have put your coat or small bag on the seat beside you; in a library you may spread your books around you. Once I was traveling on a train toLondon, I was in a section for four people and there was a table between us. The man opposite to me had his briefcase on the table. There was no space on my side of the table at all. I was unhappy. I thought he thought that he owned the whole table.I had been reading a book about nonverbal communication so I took various papers out of my bag and put them on his case! When I did this he suddenly became angry and his eyes nearly popped out of his head. I had taken up his space! A few minutes later I took my papers off in order to read them. He immediately moved his case to his side of the table.31.What does the first sentence in Paragraph I mean?A.The home matters greatly to Englishmen.B.The home is more important than the castle.C.The castle is more important than the home.D.Englishmen usually live in home instead of a castle.正确答案:A32.Which of the following is NOT the reason for most British to live in houses?A.They love their houses more than their gardens.B.They can make changes in the houses where they live.C.They can own private space like the house and the garden.D.They can keep the private space to themselves and friends.正确答案:A33.According to Para. 2, if you spread your books around you in the library, it means( ).A.you like to spread your books around youB.you can read one of them easily on the tableC.you find no space for your books on the seatD.you want to tell others the space belongs to you正确答案:D34.How did the man opposite to the writer show he owned the whole table?A.He sat in a section for four people.B.He placed his briefcase on the table.C.He was traveling on a train toLondon.D.He was reading a book on communication.正确答案:B35.The writer tried to get back his space by( ).A.moving the case off the tableB.reading papers on the briefcaseC.putting papers on the man’s caseD.showing the books concerned to the man正确答案:CA dinner party is often a pleasurable time for everyone but the host, so the important point to keep in mind is that “ planning” is a key part of a successful dinner party. All too often, people make the mistake of over-exerting themselves, leaving little time to enjoy the evening themselves. The following information can help you make it an enjoyable night for both yourself and your guests. Firstly, make a guest list so you’ll know how many people to cook for. Let your guests know the time and date of the dinner well in advance and be sure to remind them shortly before the party. Make a checklist of ingredients and drinks that you’ll need and try to buy them a couple of days before the party. Get the house in order the day before the dinner party. If you leave your house cleaned till on the day, you might find yourself more stressed than you need to be. Keeping the menu simple doesn’t mean it has to be boring. The night will also be a lot easier for you if you prepare dishes that can be laid out at the centre of the table, allowing guests to serve themselves. You can provide some music and the type of music will depend on the type of guests. You might not think of it, but the night will run a lot smoother with background music for the evening.36.What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?A.A good “planning” means over-exerting the host.B.Usually both the host and the guests enjoy themselves at the party.C.It’s important for hosts to leave themselves some time to enjoy the dinner party.D.The host should make a fuller preparation in order to have more time to enjoy the party.正确答案:C37.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in planning a diner party?A.List the ingredients and drinks for the party and buy them before the party.B.Inform your guests of the time and date beforehand.C.Prepare some proper music for the party.D.Practice cooking according to menu.正确答案:D38.Get your house in order the day before the dinner party so that( ).A.you may find yourself less stressed than you need to beB.you won’t get up so early on the party dayC.you will have little time to enjoy the partyD.your guests will be much happier正确答案:A39.Which statement is NOT true according to the information given in the passage?A.Making lists helps.B.A simple menu must be boring as well.C.Music can make the party go smoother.D.Allowing guests to help themselves makes things easier.正确答案:B40.What’s the third paragraph mainly about?A.How to entertain your guests.B.How to save time for a dinner party.C.How to plan a party.D.How to enjoy yourself at a party.正确答案:CClozeWhat will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or 50,000 years from now? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from 【C1】______he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time. Let us【C2】______an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years【C3】______, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time, so we are sure that man will continue togrow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 10% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, 【C4】______, we shall have to use our brains more and more—and【C5】______we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a【C6】______change to the head; in particular the forehead will grow larger. On the other hand, we【C7】______to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more【C8】______, because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether because it does not serve a useful purpose【C9】______In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald. Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature【C10】______! Section III Practical Reading ComprehensionDirections:There are two passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are fourchoices marked A, B, C, and D. You should decide on the best choice andmake the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet with a single linethrough the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage.Maturing as a mom means being able to tolerate a certain inevitable amount of risk. The amount you can handle depends to some extent on your genetic makeup; in fact, scientists have recently discovered a “worry” gene that makes people susceptible to anxiety, pessimism, and negative thinking. The gene in question is the human serotonin(含于血液的复合胺) transporter, and researchers say that those who have a shortened version of it receive less serotonin, a brain chemical that regulates mood. But why lay all the blame for our skittish selves on nature when we can blame nurture -- in other words, our parents? Our worry thermostat (调节器) is often set by how they reacted to life’s problems. Martha Outlaw, mom of two young daughters, says she can trace her disquiet to her early years. “Because of their own childhood experiences, my mom and dad carried around a constant dread that our family’s fortunes could suddenly change for the worse,” she says. Such a strong influence from childhood can create a deep-seated state of worry that’s hard to shake off.A friend of mine, who’s fairly laid-back otherwise, is afraid of the dark, and now that she has a young daughter, it’s grown worse -- to the point where she can’t stay in the house when her husband travels. She tracks this anxiety back to her father, who was an alcoholic and used to wake up his kids at night when he came home after a bender. “My demons come out at night,”she says. “I can’t stop worrying that someone will break into my house and take my daughter. How would I protect her? For me, the late hours have always been a chaotic time when I don’t feel safe.”Your maternal worry threshold may also be influenced by other factors, such as your age when your kids were born. Janyce Dudney, mom of four from Tennessee, started having kids at 23. “I was so young I didn’t know all the things I should be afraid of,” she says. As we get older, we become more apprehensive about risks and start to lose any feelings of invincibility(无敌).Birth order may also play a role in how high you’re strung. Parents tend to hover over first-borns, often implanting unnecessary fear and caution. Later-born kids have buffers(缓冲) between them and their moms and dads.Given the influence of our own parents and childhood experiences, it’s imperative to try to prevent passing on the worry bug to our kids. This means: Try not to let them see you anxiety (or at least, over-anxiety). Protecting your child from adult concerns gives him a chance to build up hope, optimism, and resiliency. Obsessive worrying is particularly damaging.(Words: 453)From: 1. The phrase “susceptible to” (in line 3, Para 1) most probably means .A. suspicious ofB. resistant toC. easily attacked byD. easily tolerant to2. Why does the mother often worry that her daughter will be taken away at night?A. She always has the illusion that ghosts come out at night.B. It is so dark that she is frightened and lonely when her husband is on business.C. Someone will break into at night when she stays at home alone.D. She has the deep-seated state of worry caused by her alcoholic father.3. According to this passage, the following factors contribute to a mom’s worry EXCEPT that .A. her husband is always on business and has no time to educate childrenB. her parents used to have a dread that their family fortunes would deteriorateC. she is the first child of her parentsD. she is mature enough to be aware of all the risks4. We can infer form this passage that a child is likely to be optimistic and resilient if .A. he is brought up in a wealthy familyB. his parents can spare more time to accompany himC. his parents try to avoid expressing their adult concerns to himD. his parents give birth to him when they are mature enough5. Which is the most appropriate title?A. Adult ConcernsB. Why Moms WorryC. Worry GenesD. Parents’ Influence on ChildrenPassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.Environmental activists, religious organizations, public interest groups, professional associations and other scientists and government officials have all raised concerns about GM (genetically modified) foods, and criticized agribusiness for pursuing profit without concern for potential hazards, and the government for failing to exercise adequate regulatory oversight. It seems that everyone has a strong opinion about GM foods. Most concerns about GM foods fall into three categories: environmental hazards, human health risks, and economic concerns.Several environmental hazards have been discussed. Firstly, they do unintended harm to other organisms. Last year a laboratory study was published in Nature showing that pollen (花粉) from B.t. corn caused high death rates in monarch butterfly caterpillars. Secondly, they reduce the effectiveness of pesticides. Just as some populations of mosquitoes developed resistance to the now-banned pesticide DDT, many people are concerned that insects will become resistant to B.t. or other crops that have been genetically-modified to produce their own pesticides. Another concern is that crop plants engineered for herbicide tolerance and weeds will cross-breed, resulting in the “super weeds”.Human health risks have attracted much attention. Many children in the US and Europe have developed life-threatening allergies (敏感症) to peanuts and other foods. There is a possibility that introducing a gene into a plant may create a new allergen or cause an allergic reaction in susceptible individuals. Besides, there is a growing concern that introducing foreign genes into food plants may have an unexpected and negative impact on human health. A recent article published in Lancet examined the effects of GM potatoes on the digestive system in rats. This study claimed that there were obvious differences in the rats fed GM potatoes and rats fed unmodified potatoes. But on the whole, with the exception of possible allergenicity (变应原性), scientists believe that GM foods do not present a risk to human health. Some people think bringing a GM food to market is a lengthy and costly process, and of course agri-biotech companies wish to ensure a profitable return on their investment. Many new plant genetic engineering technologies and GM plants have been patented (申请专利). Yet consumer advocates are worried that patenting these new plant varieties will raise the price of seeds so high that small farmers and third world countries will not be able to afford seeds for GM crops, thus widening the gap between the wealthy and the poor. It is hoped that in a humanitarian gesture, more companies and non-profits will offer their products at reduced cost to impoverished nations.(Words: 426)From: 6. According to the first paragraph, the government is criticized because .A. it supports the agribusiness to pursue profitB. it hasn’t realized the potential risks GM foods may have on ecological balanceC. it is not efficient on supervision and administrationD. some government officials ignore people’s concerns about GM food7. The “super weeds” (in Para 2) most probably refer to the weeds that are .A. too strong to cut downB. resistant to herbicideC. stronger than crop plantsD. powerful, growing fast8. According to the author, GM foods people’s health.A. undoubtedly do harm toB. are likely to have bad effect onC. possibly do good toD. have definite influence on9. The author suggests that the impoverished countries should solve their food problem by .A. their independent research on the seeds for GM cropsB. importing the seeds for GM crops from developed countriesC. accepting humanitarian food from the wealthy countriesD. buying the seeds provided by noncommercial organizations at lower price10. According to the passage, GM foods may lead to the following consequences EXCEPT that .A. the grain products may dramatically increaseB. other species and even the ecological system may be affectedC. new and unexpected diseases may come into beingD. the gap between the rich and the poor may be widened among various regions Key to Unit 7 Section III Practical Reading Comprehension1.
