Studying for an exam while listening to music is not smart, because background music can injure your ability to perform memory tasks, new research has found.

Study participants were asked to recall a list of eight consonants (辅音字母) in the order they were presented. They did this while in five different sound environments: quiet surroundings; music they liked~ music they disliked; changing state; and steady state.

The participants recall ability was poorest when listening to music, regardless of whether

they liked or disliked it, and in changing-state conditions. The most accurate recall occurred when participants performed the task in steady-state environments, according to the study published online in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology.

The poorer performance of the music and changing-state sounds are due to the audible (听得见的) change within those environments. This hurts the ability to recall the order of items, via retelling, within the presented list, explained lead researcher Nick Perham, a lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff, in a news release from the journal's publisher.

"Mental arithmetic (算术) also requires the ability to memorize order information in the short-term via retelling, and may be similarly affected by their performance in the presence of changing-state, background environments," he added.

56. When performing a challenging mental task, you'd better do it ______。

A. in the music you like

C. in changing state

A. When doing our homework, we'd better play sweet songs

B. Music may affect our performance of memorizing

Nearly 600,000 Americans lost their jobs this past month, pushing the nation's unemployment rate to 7.6 percent. But not all of those fired workers are sitting at home, reading the want ads and waiting for the phone to ring. Thousands are returning to school, making public colleges and universities among the few bright places in a disappointing U.S. economy.

For example, when many Americans have had their work hours decreased, or even lost their jobs, Sherian Huddleston in charge of the enrollment (注册) of new students at Middle Tennessee State University(MTSU) is working overtime. The university's population grew by 800 students this term--an increase of 4 percent over last spring’s registration. Huddle ston says seeing enrollments rise in a failing economy is not unexpected. "When people are out of jobs," she points out," they will look at 'What else can I do?" What other career can I follow?' and they will often go to school or return to school if they have not previously completed their degree."

Older returning students aren't the only ones increasing enrollment at Middle Tennessee State. Huddleston says she's also seeing an increase in student transfers. "Students who previously went out of state to more expensive schools, or even in state to more expensive, maybe private schools, because of the economy those students may be transferring to public schools, the state schools, to make the most of the lower cost of attending," she explains.

In white shirt, blue pants, black cloth shoes and two pigtails, Jingqiu gives off an air of great "pure beauty" in Zhang Yimou’s new movie Under the Hawthorn Tree, which tells the story of the sad romance of Jingqiu and a handsome young man named Laosan set at the end of

the "cultural revolution" (1966-- 1976).

Before it was released, moviegoers foresaw what this "pure beauty" could be. Director Zhang complained of how long it had taken him to find the right girl for the part of Jingqiu -- a character so innocent. She believes that simply lying on the same bed as a man will make her pregnant.

It was 18-year-old Zhou Dongyu who stood out from the crowd. According to Zhang, Zhou has "eyes that are clear like a fountain on a mountainside". Born to an ordinary worker's family, the Shijiazhuang girl was in her final year of high school and working hard for a place in an art college.

"If you have fair skin and clear eyes, as Jingqiu does, it is easy to look pure. Girls today wear so many jewels and make-up--that's the reason Zhang was not interested," said Du Yanlai, 17, of Chengdu.

While some teenagers consider such "pure" beauty illusory, others believe that it speaks of something soulful.

Purity is all about an innocence that shines through from within, thinks 16-year-old Tan Mengxi of Nanjing. "Being pure can be simple, not having complicated thoughts and being inexperienced. However, it doesn't mean an ignorant or native person. So, a person is pure in his or her nature if he or she is always enthusiastic and able to deal with difficult matters independently. This purity doesn't pass with time, "she said.

64. What's the real purity according to Tan Mengxi?

A. Having eyes as clear as a fountain.

B. Not wearing so many jewels and make-up.

C. Being ignorant and native.

D. Being simple, enthusiastic and able to manage things alone.

65. What does the underlined word “illusory” mean here?

A. unreal.

B. unhealthy.

C. unscientific.

D. negative.

66. What can we infer from the passage?

A. Zhou Dongyu, who was 18,was from an art college.

B. Director Zhang disliked those girls with so many accessories and make-up.

C. Different people have different opinions about purity.

D. Many young girls in China are eager to stand out.

67. The main idea of the passage is

A. Why Director Zhang selected Miss Zhou as the leading star

B. How people like the movie Under the Hawthorn Tree

C. What makes a pure girl

D. Why Chinese girls want to be pure

A lamp is more than a light. Lamps allow the owner to add to the design of a room. They are very functional and sometimes the only source of light in a room. There are many types of lamps, and of course they come in many styles and colors to fit anyone's home. Lamps can be soft and inviting or bright and useful. Floor lamps are often tall, thinly shaped lamps that bring light to a large area by cupping the bottom of the bulbs and forcing light up. Table lamps tend to force the

light down and out to lighten up a smaller, more private space. But, that doesn't mean that you can't find a lamp that fits your needs as well as your tastes. In fact, you can even have lamps made to order to match your desired look.

But, before you decide to make that decision, check out the lamps in department stores and specialty stores. While most home improvement stores offer a wide variety of floor lamps, hanging lamps, and table lamps, you can find an even larger selection in a lighting store. There you will be at a loss about all the different choices you have. There will be choices in every style imaginable. If you still can't find what you are looking for, check contents and even the Internet. Specialty stores nationwide will ship lamps and accessories (配件) to you.

Adding some extra light to your home may have been your early search when trying to find a lamp, but you will soon see that there is more to look for in a lamp. The design will fit your home and the color should match your home. The details on the lamp or lamp shade can even be found to match your furniture, tables, or other items in your home. Finding a great lamp is a fun adventure into the world of lighting.

68. The purpose of the passage is ______.

A. to tell us how to choose lamps for our home

B. to inform us of the variety of lamps produced in stores

C. to tell us that different lamps have different usages

D. to show us the great part lamps play in our life

69. According to the author, ______.

A. all the floor lamps are tall and thin

B. table lamps can help you avoid being seen

C. lamps can be attractive in a way

D. none of the lamps will suit you

70. What's the author's attitude towards having a lamp made to order?

A. That's just what he wants to suggest.

B. He suggests seeking lamps in stores.

C. He thinks it a waste of money.

D. He advises making lamps by oneself.

71. What should you do if you plan to buy a floor lamp?

A. You should buy a floor lamp at last.

B. You should match the lamp with your room.

C. You should find some accessories to it.

D. You should think of nothing but a floor lamp.

Recently a young fellow from Sheridan was accused of first-degree murder. The youth was 15 years old when he shot and killed a 79-year-old man while burglarizing (入室盗窃)the man's home. The victim was a well-respected and much loved Sheridan citizen.

The crime and punishment are tragedies. It was a tragedy that a wonderful citizen of the city was shot and killed in his bedroom in the middle of the night. It is another tragedy that the young man, now 17, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

His mother had largely neglected the young man. Suffering an unhappy marriage life, his mother sent him to live with an aunt and uncle in Sheridan. The youth really had no activities other than skateboarding at the skate park. The circle of friends that the youth had was basically in 1he same boat: they had little parental love and care in their lives.

I wonder what would have happened to the young fellow if he had been introduced to the joys of the outdoors at an early age. Perhaps his life would have taken a different course. Many of us have learned our outdoor skills by observing our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, or some other adults. Basically, the people who taught us cared for us and wanted to get us interested in their outdoor activities.

Parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends of the family need to do the same thing today. We need to educate our children in outdoor skills. We need to teach them by taking them fishing, hunting, hiking, birding, horseback riding, and swimming. Most of all, we need to spend time with our children and show them we care.

We need to give our youths some healthy outdoor alternatives to the drug and troublemaking culture that results from too little supervision and too little love. By doing so, perhaps we can avoid further tragedies.

72. The purpose of the author in writing the article is ______.

A. to call for giving children outdoor experiences

B. to ask to punish children if they break the laws

C. to tell us a tragedy about a young boy

D. to present that too many troubles exist in society

73. What is the author's attitude towards the young fellow?

A. Hateful.

B. Unconcerned.

C. Ironical.

D. Sympathetic.

74. From the text we can know the reason for the young fellow's crime is that ______.

A. his mother didn't have a good marriage

B. his aunt and uncle treated him badly

C. he enjoyed skateboarding at the skate park

D. he was short of parental control and love

75. According to the fourth and fifth paragraph, we can know ______.

A. children used to do outdoor activities by themselves

B. parents are always playing with children

C. the boy may have avoided crime if taken care of

D. parents used to ignore their children

第四部分写作(共两节,满分35分)

第一节任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

You can't avoid a conflict at work. If you can avoid a conflict, it means you will win what you want regardless of what the other person wants. Since the potential issue has not been removed, it will simply reappear later. Here are the necessary steps to effectively get rid of conflicts at work.

★Realize that some conflicts are unavoidable at work. On numerous occasions, conflict and disagreement are likely to happen. But when a conflict happens it's not the end of the world. On the contrary, it can be the beginning of an interesting learning process. Conflicts mean that people care enough to disagree strongly. The trick is not to allow the conflict to go on forever.

★Handle conflicts sooner rather than later. Solve a conflict when it starts, as it only gets worse with time going by. Conflicts at work arise not from something that was said, but from something that wasn't said! Everyone's waiting for the other to admit he's wrong and gets more unpleasant after the conflict has lasted a while. It's essential to interrupt the "waiting game" before it gets to that point.

★Ask nicely. If somebody has done something that made you angry, or if you don't understand

their viewpoint or actions, simply asking nicely about it can make a world of difference. Never assume that people do what they do to annoy or hurt you. Sometimes there's a good reason why that person does what he or she does, and a potential conflict disappear right there. Do remember to make an inquiry, not an accusation of any sort.

★Appreciate. Praise the other part in the conflict. Tell them why it's worth it to you to solve the conflict. This can be difficult as few people find it easy to praise and appreciate a person they disagree strongly with, but it's a great way to move forward.

With the rapid development of our country's economy, more and more cars are coming into common families, which causes serious traffic jams, environmental pollution as well as loss of economy.

As far as I am concerned, the solutions to this problem are presented as follows: first of all, the governments ate supposed to restrict the amount of car-buying, and meanwhile raise the costs of owning private ears. Besides, vehicles from other places should be properly limited to enter downtowns. In addition, the governments should design the reasonable traffic systems of their own cities.

In a word, the traffic jams have increasingly affected aspects of social life. Therefore, we must spare no efforts to solve this problem to keep up our country's economic rise.

One evening last summer, 11-year-old Owen and his mom put on white suits and taped their rain boots to their pant legs. Then they each grabbed a wooden pole with a large white cloth attached to it and started dragging the tools through the trees and grass in their Wisconsin backyard. They were looking for ticks(扁虱虫). Owen’s mom, Amy Prunuske, teaches microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wausau. She studies diseases that ticks carry. Owen, though, is known as a citizen scientist. Citizen scientists are people—young or old—who help collect data for research projects. They usually aren’t professional scientists, or if they are, not in the field of the project. Still, their work can be incredibly important. Citizen scientists can help trained scientists gather data from all over the world—even from space. They can provide new ideas and new ways of thinking. Kids often make great citizen scientists because they tend to be curious and good at following precise directions. Sometimes they’re even better at these things than adults. And schools are convenient places for scientists to recruit big groups of helpers. As a bonus, citizen science often gets kids more excited about science. Citizen science takes advantage not just of many sets of eyeballs, but also of many minds. When professional European scientists in Austria were trying to find how best to encourage people to use less energy, they partnered with student citizen scientists. The adult scientists had a long list of questions for people about how much energy they used. Right away, the students noticed some problems the adults hadn’t thought of. There were too many questions, the kids said. And some of those questions were too complicated.
