A certain good woman one day said something that hurt her best friend of many years. She regretted immediately and would have done anything to have taken the words back . What she said hurt the friend so much that this good woman was herself hurt for the pain she caused . In an effort to undo what she had done , she went to an older ,wise woman in the village, explained her situation ,and asked for advice. Listening to her ,the older woman sensed the younger woman's distress and knew she must help her . She also knew she could never alleviate the pain , but she could teach . She knew the outcome would depend solely on the character of the younger woman . She said ,"Tonight ,take your best feather pillows and put single feather on the doorstep of each house in the town before the sun rises." The young woman hurried home to prepare for her chore ,even though the feather pillows were very dear to her .All night long ,she labored alone in the cold. Finally the sky was getting light ,she placed the last feather on the steps of the last house .Just as the sun rose, she returned to the older woman. "Now", said the wise woman,"go back and refill your pillows with the feather you have put on the steps .then everything will be as it was before." "You know that's impossible! the wind blew away each feather as fast as I placed them on the doorsteps!" the young woman was surprised . "That's true," said the older woman."never forget. each of your words is like a feather in the wind. once spoken, no amount of effort, regardless how heartfelt or sincere, can never return them to your mouth. Choose your words well and guard them most of all the presence of those of you love.

Conferred the title Number One Scholar, he was chosen to be the emperor's son-in-law. By convention, he would first return to his hometown in silken official robes. Before he left he begged the emperor for a favor--to erect a chastity archway in honor of his widowed mother. His request was granted. His mother, however, appeared uneasy when she was told about the chastity archway. She had to admit that she was determined to remarry and her would-be husband was Zhu's former tutor to whom he owed a great deal. Devastated by the idea Zhu fell to his knees in front o f his mother: “Mom. That's absolutely impossible. How could I face others if you do so. Besides, it will mean I have deceived the emperor--a felony deserving death penalty.”As he was caught in a fix and nothing could be done, his mother sighed:“Since thin gs have come to a head, let's trust to luck.” She then took off a skirt and handed it to him, saying:“Wash it tomorrow and dry it in the sun for a day. If itdries up by dawn the next morning, I'll drop the idea; if not, you are not to interfere, for it's t he will of Heaven.”That day was very fine with the sun shining brightly in a clear sky. But during the night clouds gathered and the sky became overcast. It broke into a violent shower towards daybreak. The skirt remained wet long after dawn. His mother said to him seriously:“Look here, son. It rains when Heaven deems fit, mother remarries when she wants to. The will of Heaven is not to be opposed.” So Zhu could do nothing but report to the emperor and express his readiness to be punished. The emperor was greatly surprised by the story and issued an imperial decree:“He who is unaware is not liable. Since the match has been made by Heaven, it has to be allowed.”

He was the son of a man who was consumed with the workings of the human voice, how it is produced and used, and especially, in teaching the deaf how to use it. Perhaps this obsession of the elder Bell was one of the reasons he married whom he did. For the woman who would give birth to the inventor of the telephone... was deaf!
Young Alexander Graham Bell grew up with his fathers passions. In 1870, because of poor health, he migrated to Canada. It was not long before his success in teaching the deaf to speak brought him to the attention of a wealthy merchant in Boston who had a deaf daughter, Mabel. Would Mr. Bell please teach Mabel how to speak? Yes, he would. And did. And they fell in love. It was she who inspired him through a lot of the exhausting experiments, who pulled him through the depressions that often inflict those whose drive to succeed is so intense, while he developed the then remarkable instrument that transformed speech into electrical impulses that could then be converted back into human speech at the end of a wire He had pierced yet another solitude, the one that up until then had denied human speech between people distant from oneanother. A year later, in 1877, he and Mabel were married. He later became an American citizen.

1 Tiresias was a blind, darkseeing prophet(先知) of Thebes. He was struck with blindness in his youth, because he had spied unwittingly on the goddess Athena. He was wandering in the woods one day when quite unexpectedly he saw anaked maiden bathing in a placid lake. Little did he know that he had offended the virgin goddess. Taken unaware and scarlet with wrath(愤怒) , the goddess exclaimed that whoever had the boldness to steal a glance at her naked body was doomed to perpetual(永久的) blindness. But when she learned later that the offence was unintentional, it was too late for her to take back what she had said. Taking pity on the poor youth for the loss of his sight, she obtained from Zeus an exceptional long life for him, and from Apollo a divine(神圣的) power of prophecy. Besides, she provided him with a marvellous sharpness of ear, so that he could understand the voices of all birds. And she filled his mind with mystic knowledge of things past and of things to come. In short she gave him quite an amount of her own wisdom. He was the first to recognise and welcome Dionysus, god of feast and wine, on the The ban land. When the infant Heracles caught Hera's two serpents(巨蛇) in its hands, it was Tiresias who cast the child's fortune and revealed the divine origin and destiny of the boy. When Oedipus abused Tiresias as having had a hand in the murder of Laius, Tiresias had the fearless courage to tell the truth that Oedipus was the murderer. Even in the lower world he continued to prophesy. There he helped Odysseus when the hero came to him for advice. Alive, he was highly respected by all;dead, he enjoyed the generous air and rosy light in the land of the Blest.

Towards the end of the Age of Bronze the human world became very cruel.Men grew hungry, impolite and ungodly(邪恶的) . Neither right nor law was respected any longer, and the rule of hospitality was forgotten. Dressed up in human form, Zeus visited Arcadia and Thessaly, and disliked the deadly wrongs of men. He decided to clear the earth of them all. Without hesitation he released the rainy south wind and called upon the heartless Poseidon to help. Soon the whole world sank in a vast ocean, and the entire humanrace disappeared in the unheard of(前所未闻的) flood, all but two poor Thessalians. These were an old childless couple, kind and faithful and contented with life. The man was called Deucalion and his wife Pyrrha. Son of Prometheus, Deucalion had been warned beforehand by his father of the coming flood. He made himself a huge chest. When the roaring flood came the couple hid themselves in it and floated for nine days until it touched land again on Mt Parnassus. The once active world presented a frightening sight. It was all death and ruin. Feeling lonely and unsafe, the old couple prayed to the gods for help. A sage(圣人) instructed them to cast the bones of their mother about. The son of the wise Titan, having guessed the true meaning of the mysterious command, started throwing stones behind him.A miracle occurred. The stones that the man cast became men, the stones that the woman threwturned into women. Since then, people appeared on the land again. The Heroic Age had begun.

”。
