I chose describing my pre-game routine for basketball, which is a huge part of my life. First, I go through stretches and warm-up dribbling drills. Then I practice different shooting forms from all over the court. Next, I do conditioning exercises like wind sprints to build up my endurance. And finally, I take a few relaxing deep breaths and visualize myself playing my best. Writing it all out made me realize how much preparation goes into being game-ready!The last unit of the semester was on summarizing opinions from persuasive texts and media. We read all sorts of sources presenting different viewpoints on topics like dress code policies, environmental issues, and that age-old debate: Which is better, book or movie? The authors used lots of persuasive techniques like rhetorical questions, appeals to emotion, and hardfacts/statistics to try and sway the reader.For the comprehension questions, we had to identify the writer's main claim, key reasons, and examples of different persuasive methods used. My favorite passage was the one arguing that print books are superior to ebooks and ebook readers. As an avid reader, I loved the vivid descriptions of the textures, smells, and imperfections that make physical books so charming and nostalgic. Although I do see some advantages of ebooks too, like how they're more portable and environmentally-friendly.Then for the writing piece, we had to take a stance on one of the topics and build our own persuasive argument using at least three reasoning techniques. I chose to write about why I think my school should revise the dress code rules to be less strict. My three main arguments were: 1) The current policies are too subjective and open to discrimination; 2) Overly harsh dresscodes have been proven to disrupt the learning environment and make students feel shamed; and 3) As young adults, we should have more freedom of self-expression through our clothing choices. I tried to use lots of rhetorical questions and examples to make my points as compelling as possible.Phew, that's a wrap on the semester's worth of textbook work!
