课后阅读作业Unit 2 Period 4Ⅰ. 阅读理解APeople used to think that wetlands were wasted land. Developers would drain them with ditches(水沟), fill them in with tons of soil, and build houses, schools, and parking areas on them. Then scientists began to realize the important role wetlands play in the environment.Wetlands act like giant sponges(海绵)during storms. They soak up extra storm water and afterward release it slowly back into the water cycle. This helps prevent flooding. Towns where people have drained wetlands have found that in a big storm, their streets and homes are often flooded because there are no wetlands to soak up the excess water.Wetlands also act as giant filters where pollutants are absorbed and dissolved over time. Though wetlands can become polluted from dumping, wastewater, and fertilizer runoff from farm fields, they are able to process some pollutants over time because of all the microorganisms and plants living there.Wetlands are especially important for providing homes and breeding grounds to millions of birds, fish, and amphibians worldwide. Many wetlands have become national wildlife refuges(避难所), where you can go to take pictures and look at birds and animals. The Everglades are a huge wetland that once covered more than four million acres of southern Florida. Sometimes called the“river of grass”, the Everglades are ashallow sheet of water that slowly flowed across a grassy plain. In the late 1800s people began draining parts of the Everglades for development. Roads were built and towns sprang up. The Everglades shrank to half its original size. Cities like Miami grew up where once there was a thriving wetland. Sewage and waste from the cities were pumped into the remaining wetlands. Over time scientists began to see the importance of the Everglades. Even with its smaller size, the Everglades filtered the pollutants coming from the cities, absorbing the worst of it like a sewage treatment plant. During storms the Everglades protected the cities from storm surge flooding. They also are just a great place to visit and see wildlife.【语篇概述】本文讲述了湿地的重要性。

our weekly journeys to the library were a piece of perfection.I had around myself at one time all the people I loved best — my father, mother, brothers and sister — and all the things I loved best — quiet, space and books.I read a lot of books about science:not the spaceships my brothers preferred, but the birds and the bees, literally.I brought home a book of birds and searched the trees for anything other than robins(知更鸟).I went through a phase of loving books with practical science experiments and used up a whole bottle of white vinegar by pouring it on the sides of our apartment building to prove that it was constructed of limestone(石灰岩).One Saturday,as I wandered through the young adult section,I saw a title:LittleWomen,by Louisa May Alcott.I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything.A book that soundedgreat on the shelf could be dull once you got it home.So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first few paragraphs.I read and read and read LittleWomen until it was time to walk home, and, except for a few essential interruptions like sleeping and eating,I did not put it down until the end.Even the freedom to watch weekend television held Everywhere he goes, he causes chaos, making his fans split their sides with laughter. He is Mr. Bean, the lead character of the hugely popular film and TV series. Now he is back in a new movie called Mr. Bean’s Holiday. It will open in China on July 7. This time, our hero and his peanut-sized brain travel to the sunny south of France. What kind of trouble will he cause?Created by British comic actor Rowan Atkinson, Mr. Bean first appeared in 1990. Since then the idiot hero has been a hit around the world. Why has the character enjoyed success with people of different cultures? One reason is that there’s very little dialogue in the stories and thus no language barrier. The sight of Mr. Bean as a barber making a terrible mess of some poor customer's hair doesn’t need translating. But there’s a deeper reason. Although he is British and the stories generally take place in British settings, Mr. Bean is really nation-less. People from different cultures laugh at Mr. Bean for the same reason earlier generations laughed at comic star Charlie Chaplin.Mr. Bean breaks social rules wherever he goes – he jumps the queue, tries to cheat in exams – we all secretly want to do but generally don’t.While you are waiting for the new film to be released, think back to Mr. Bean’s previous stories: Bean makes himself a sandwich in the park: he cuts the bread with scissors, spreads the butter with his credit card, washes a lettuce but uses his sock to dry it. He crushes peppercorns with his shoe. The pepper makes him sneeze and he drops the sandwich.Mr. Bean goes to a swimming pool, and tries out the high diving board, but gets scared. He is “helped” by two impatient boys who push him off. Bean loses his swimming trunks, and tries to get back to the changing room unseen, and fails.Sauce: /viewthread-19-298354-1.shtml1.
