Meet 53-year-old Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi!Their story began in xx, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee. Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would end up creating an environmental paradise. Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. In addition, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season. When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a.m. when the sightless Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their worksite. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches from existing trees. Haixia climbs to the tree-top and with Wenqi’s direction, selects the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and carefully plants it. Finally Wenqi waters the area.Though hard-working, the men don’t make much money. Many young people, when they finish school at the age of 18, take a gap year before they go to university.Parents often want their children to grow up a little and see what the real world is like when they finish school. Although they are worried about their safety, many think that the advantages of independence and experience are worth the worries. Children are encouraged to be brave, independent and to explore the world on their own or with friends.Young people also want to experience freedom and see what life is like on the other side. This other side could be the other side of the world or just the other side of life. For example, if they have a rich life, they may want to see how people in poor areas live.A gap year after school is also an important chance for young people to spend time thinking about what they want to do with their lives. A little bit of growing up and experience will help them make their important career decisions, especially when they are unsure about what they want to study.Another reason for going straight after school is to get a break from studying before they start the next few years of university. So anywhere you travel in the world, you will meet young European people exploring the world. So much of the world has been travelled and explored. The young people are now looking for more worthy experiences. Some of them work as volunteers to do something for the country they are visiting. Many gap year volunteers are now spending a few months teaching English in Thailand, helping feed giant pandas in China or building a well(井) in a village in Africa. These young people’s wish to ex plore the world is an expression of the values of the societies that they are part of. Both discovering the world and making a positive difference in it are important parts of the Western mind.11. In Western society, the chance for young people to see the othercountries and experience life is considered .A. rare B .unimportant C. important D. useful12. Which is NOT a reason for young people to take a gap year?A. Young people want to take a break from studying.B. Young people want to be sure about what to study.C. Parents encourage them to be brave and independent.D. Parents encourage them to live a free and wealthy life.13. Now a gap year volunteer might do something more valuable like .A. experiencing different culturesB. helping protect rainforests in BrazilC. making friends with more peopleD. enjoying traditional local food14. By taking a gap year, young people may .A. stay with their parents all the timeB. make money for their further studyC. help change the world for the betterD. change the Western mind pletely15. Chinese scientists recently have produced two monkeys with the same gene with this Dolly method, known as SCNT. Many researchers __p_o_u_r__w_a_t_e_r_o_n___the idea that the team’s success bring scientists closer to__c_lo_n_i_n_g__h_u_m_a__n_s_. Despite limitations, they treat this breakthrough a novel model system for scientists studying human biology and disease.
D. Adding supportive evidence to it.
Still, the research process proved difficult, and many attempts by the team failed. Just two healthy baby monkeys born from more than 60 tested mothers. This leads to many researchers’ pouring water on the idea that the team’s results bring scientists closer to cloning humans. They thought this work is not a stepping stone to establishing methods for obtaining live born human clones. Instead, this clearly remains a very foolish thing to attempt, it would be far too inefficient, far too unsafe, and it is also pointless.
But the scientists involved emphasize that this is not their goal. There is now no barrier for cloning primate species, thus cloning humans is closer to reality. However, their research purpose is entirely for producing non-human primate models for human diseases; they absolutely have no intention, and society will not permit this work to be extended to humans. Despite limitations, they treat this breakthrough a novel model system for scientists studying human biology and disease.

It is far difficult for investors to challenge Big Tech and hard to separate the good these companies do in the world — connecting old friends and giving space for people to share their ideas — from the bad. In the meantime, stopping using technology remains problematic. In the World Without Mind: The Existential Threat of Big Tech, Franklin Foer argues that tech should be seen in a similar way to junk food: a convenience that some reject for more continuing nutrition.
