Making Small TalkThe ability to make small talk is highly valued. In fact, many English students are more interested in making effective small talk than knowing correct grammar structures. Small talk gets friendships started and “breaks the ice” before important business meetings and other events. Why is small talk difficult for some English learners?First of all, making small talk is not difficult only for English learners, but also for many native speakers of English. However, small talk can be especially difficult for some learners because making small talk means talking about almost anything and that means having a wide vocabulary that can cover most topics. How to improve small talk skills? Now that we understand the problem, the next step is to improve the situation. Here are some tips to improve small talkskills. Of course, making effective small talk means lots of practice, but keeping these tips in mind should improve overall conversational skills.·Do some researchSpend time on the Internet, reading magazines, or watching TV specials about the type of people you are going to meet. For example: If you are taking a class with students from other countries, take time after the first few days of class to do some research. They will appreciate your interest and your conversations will be much more interesting.·Use the Internet to gain specific vocabularyThis is related to doing research about other people. If you have a businessmeeting, or are meeting people who share a common interest (a basketball team, a tour group interested in art, etc.), take advantage of the Internet to learn specific vocabulary. Almost all businesses and interest groups have glossaries(词汇表) on the Internet explaining the most important jargon(行话) related to their business or activity.·Find common interestsOnce you have a subject that interests both of you, keep to it! You can do this in a number of ways: talking about travel, talking about the school or friend you have in common, talking about the differences between your culture and the new culture.【诱思导学】1.In your opinion, what's small talk in China?________________________________________________________________ ________ 2.What topics do you often choose when you do small talk with others?________________________________________________________________ ________ 【答案】1.Small talk means an informal conversation between friends, classmates, workmates, acquaintances and so on. 2.Sports, exams, food, fashion, weather, music, friendship, mood and so on.Period ⅠPreviewing(教师用书独具)●教学目标初步掌握本课文中的词汇,浅层次理解课文,了解相关的背景知识。

Module 1 Small Talk Section Ⅰ Introduction &Reading-Pre-readingIn most Englishspeaking countries, it is normal and necessary to make “small talk” in certain situations.Small talk is a casual form of conversation that “breaks the ice” or fills an awkward silence between people.Even though you may feel shy using your second language, it is sometimes considered rude to say nothing.Where do people make small talk?People make small talk just about anywhere, but there are certain places where it is very common. Most often, small talk occurs in places where people are waiting for something. For example, you might chat with another person who is waiting for the bus to arrive.People also make small talk in a doctor's or dentist's waiting room, or in queue at the grocery store. At the office, people make small talk in elevators or lunchrooms and even in restrooms, e specially if there is a lineup. Some social events (such as a party) require small talk among guests who do not know each other very well.It is called “mingling” when people walk around in a social setting and talk to a variety of people. Why do people make small talk? There are a few different reasons why people use small talk. The first, and mostobvious, is to break an uncomfortable silence.Another reason, however, is simply to fill time. That is why it is so common to make small talk when you are waiting for something. Some people make small talk in order to be polite. You may not feel like chatting with anyone at a party, but it is rude to just sit in a corner by yourself. After someone introduces you to others, you do not know anything about them, so in order to show a polite interest in getting to know them better, you have to start with some small talk.Section_ⅠIntroduction_&_Reading_—_Prereading[原文呈现][读文清障]How Good Are Your Social Skills?Have you ever crossed the road toavoid talking ① to someone yourecognise?
Small Talk makes big time!
Small Talk
Small Talk
Small Talk
Well,I guess I should get back to work.
MYOB(Mind your own business)。
Small talk in America
Many Americans find silence uncomfortable during a buffet(自助餐) or a formal dinner. So in the States there is a widespread practice of making “small talk” in certain social situations.Small talk deals with various topics superficially(表面地),simply for the sake of keeping a conversation going. The topics might include the weather, sports, college courses, clothing, food, etc.Small talk is especially useful at social gatherings when you meet someone for the first time,or when polite conversation is expected but no serious discussion is desired.
It is common but not necessarily expected that one knows someone in a group before engaging with his or her conversation. At a party actually,a simple “May I join you?” and a self-introduction is normally sufficient to gain acceptance into a group and to join in a conversation. In some places, such as the lobby of a concert hall or theater,a waiting room or a classroom,it is common for strangers to start a conversation even without an introduction.
Despite the informality that pervades(遍布) U.S.society,people in the States expect those whom they speak to put aside whatever they are doing and listen.
As a rule, the conversation distance between two people is at least two or three feet.Standing at a closer range will make many Americans feel uneasy.
1.Why Americans enjoy small talks in some social gatherings?
A.Because Americans are humorous.
B.Because Americans like informality in social life.
C.Because small talks make the conversation pleasant.
D.Because social gatherings cannot go on without small talks.
2.Which of the following does not belong to the category of small talks?
A.Sports.
B.School courses.
C.Clothing.
D.Politics.
3.Which of the following is WRONG?
A.A person doesn’t have to know another one before the conversation begins.
B.A self-introduction is needed before you join in a conversation.
C.Americans like informal life.
D.Too close distance when talking will make some Americans uneasy.
答案:1.C 2.D 3.D
