We took a little boat ride around the area to get a closer look. Our guide told us that the elephant's trunk used to be even longer but part of it fell off in a storm a really long time ago. I felt bad for the elephant, but it was still an awesome sight.The next day, we went on a cruise down the Li River. This was definitely the highlight of the whole trip! The Li River is knownfor its amazing karst mountain scenery. Karst mountains are made of limestone that has been slowly dissolved and eroded over millions of years by water, giving them their really unique shapes. Cruising down the river, we saw soaring peaks and cliffs covered in lush green vegetation. It looked like something straight out of a fantasy movie! Our guide said the misty hills were the inspiration for the landscapes in the classic Chinese painting "Along the River During Qingming Festival". I can totally see why - it felt like we were drifting through a living painting.One section of the river is nicknamed "Nine Horse Fresco Hill" because the mountain looks like a huge Chinese brush painting of nine horses racing side by side. As our boat rounded the bend, it really did look just like the horses were about to gallop right off the mountain! We saw fishermen drifting by on their bamboo rafts, farmers tending to rice paddies on the banks, and kids playing in the water. It was such a peaceful, beautiful scene. I could have stayed on that river cruise forever!Another super cool experience was visiting some of the caves in Guilin. The caves are formed when underground rivers carve tunnels and chambers out of the limestone rock over incredibly long periods of time. Inside, there were all sorts of intricate rock formations like stalactites and stalagmites in weirdshapes. Our guide called them "rock flowers" and I could see why - they almost looked like petrified gardens or crystal forests! One highlight was the huge cavern called the Water Celestial Palace. When they turned off all the lights, we could see the most amazing Galaxy of shimmering lights reflecting off the pools of water and cave surfaces. It felt like we were floating in outer space!On our last day, we had to get up really early to hike up one of the karst hills to watch the sunrise. It was tough hiking up all those steep stairs, but it was so worth it! Seeing the sun slowly rise over the misty hills and rivers was breathtaking. The sky turned the most incredible shades of pink, orange, and purple. I took about a million photos trying to capture it all but the pictures didn't do it justice - you really had to be there.All too soon, our amazing trip came to an end and it was time to head back home. I was really sad to leave Guilin behind but I have so many wonderful memories that I'll never forget. I dream about going back one day to go bamboo rafting down the Li River, go deeper into the cave systems, and learn more about the history and culture.Even though Guilin is on the other side of the world from where I live, it felt like stepping into a real-life fairy tale realm.The lush scenery, winding rivers, towering karst hills and unique cave formations made me feel like I was in a magical fantasy kingdom. If you ever get the chance to visit Guilin, you absolutely have to go! It's a natural masterpiece and one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. During our summer vacation last year, my family and I went on the most amazing trip to Guilin in southern China. Let me tell you all about it!Guilin is a really beautiful city with tons of natural scenery like mountains, rivers, and caves. It's located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. To get there, we first took a flight from our hometown to Guangzhou. Then we caught another flight to Guilin Liangjiang International Airport.As soon as we arrived in Guilin, I could tell it was going to be an awesome place. Outside the airport, there were these huge karst hills with crazy shapes. Our guide told us they are called "elephant trunk hills" because one of them looks like an elephant dipping its trunk into a pool of water. So cool!We hopped on our tour bus and headed to our first stop –Reed Flute Cave. This is a huge natural limestone cave with all kinds of rockformations and inscriptions over 180 million years old! Inside the cave, there were colored lights that made the rocks look even more incredible. My favorite was the "Crystal Palace" – a section with bright lights that made the rocks sparkle like thousands of diamonds. Our guide said some of the rock formations even had names like "Virgin Forest" and "Flower and Fruit Mountain." They really did look like little forests and mountains!After the cave, we went on a relaxing cruise down the Li River. This river is known for its amazing scenery of karst peaks and rural villages along the banks. We saw fishermen in bamboo rafts, water buffalo cooling off in the river, and farmers tending their rice fields. The karst hills rose up from the river banks like ancient giants guarding the valley. It was like something from a painting or movie! We took so many pictures on that cruise.The next day, we visited Elephant Trunk Hill, where we first saw those cool rock formations shaped like elephants when we arrived. We climbed up onto the hill and had an awesome view of the whole city surrounded by karst peaks. Then we went underground to explore Reed Flute Cave again because it was just that amazing.On our third day, we took a tour of Fubo Hill which has loads of inscriptions and carvings over 500 years old. After that, we wandered through Guilin's pedestrian shopping streets which were full of street food stalls. I tried bamboo rice, stuffed zongzi dumplings, and this crazy delicious fried dough twist thing. Everything was so yummy! We also saw people performing Chinese operas and doing cool tricks.Our last day was spent hiking in Longsheng near the famous Longji Rice Terraces. These terraces were built by the Zhuang people on the slopes of towering mountains, so they looked like steps from far away. We had a local guide from the Zhuang minority who taught us how the rice paddies were planted and harvested. The views from the top were breathtaking – endless layers of green terraces covering the mountainside. I'll never forget how peaceful and beautiful it was.Overall, I had the best time in Guilin! The nature there is just mind-blowing with the karst mountains, rivers, and caves. And the culture and history is really fascinating too. Our tour guides were all super nice and knowledgeable, and they made sure our whole family had a ton of fun. I really hope I can go back to Guilin again someday.
