So, how do earthquakes happen? The earth is made up of several layers. The top layer of the earth is called the earth’s crust. The crust is divided into sections which are called plates. When two plates push against each other. or when two plates rub against each other. an earthquake happens. An earthquake causes the ground above the plate to shake. The energy source of the Wenchuan earthquake mentioned above came from the strike of the Indian Plate onto the Eurasian Plate and its northward push. Earthquakes are most likely to happen at the boundaries of the earth’s plates. Each of these plates is about 70 kilometres thick.
