人教版高中英语第二册Unit1 Making a difference--背景材料
Unit 1 Making a difference背景材料Steven Hawking (Lifetime)Steven William Hawking was born on January 8,1942, in Oxford, England. He was always interested in science and how things worked. From aboutthe age of 20, he was awarded ( 奖赏 ) a first class honors degree innatural Sciences. After receiving his degree, Steven went to Cambridgeto do research on Cosmology. After receiving his Ph. D., he left the Institute of Astronomy and since then he has held the post ( 职位 )of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics. In the late 1960’s, Steven that if general relativity is true and the Universe is expanding, an irregularity ( 不规如此 ) must have occurred at the birth of the Universe. In 1974, he first recognized a truly remarkable property ( 特性 ) of black holes, objects from which nothing was supposed to beable to escape. By taking into account ( 考虑进去 ) quantum mechanics ( 量子力学 ), he was able to show that black holes canradiate ( 放射 ) energy as particles ( 粒子 ) are created intheir vicinity ( 附近 ). Dr. Hawking has also worked on the basiclaws that govern the universe. With Rodger Penrose, he showed that Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity implied ( 含有…..意思 )space and time would have had a beginning in the “ Big Bang〞, and anend in black holes. These results indicated ( 明确 ) it was necessaryto unify ( 使一元化 ) General Relativity with Quantum Theory, theother great scientific development of the first half of the 29th century. One consequence ( 结果,后果 ) of such a unification ( 一元化 )that he discovered was that black holes should not be completely black, but it should emit ( 散发 ) radiation and eventually ( 最后 ) evaporate ( 蒸发 ) and disappear. Another speculation ( 推测 )is that universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary time. This wouldimply that the way the universe began was completely determined by thelaws of science. While studying at Oxford, Steven noticed that he was becoming rather clumsy ( 笨拙的 ) during his first year. When he returned home one Christmas 1962, his mother persuaded him to go to the doctor. In 1963, he was diagnosed ( 诊断 ) with ALS ( AmeliotrophicLateral Sclerosis or best known as the Lou Gehrig’s disease). This disease is progressively ( 有进展地 ) and slowly affects the nerves supplying all the muscles in the body.Dr. Hawking has several books, but his most prestigious ( 有威望的 ) feat ( 功绩 ) may be “a Brief History of Time〞, which was published in 1988. When asked recently about his disability and other questions surrounding it , he replied: “ People are fascinated by the contrast ( 比照 )between my very limited physical powers, and the vast nature of the universe I deal with. I’m the archetype ( 原型 ) of a disabled genius, or should I say a physically challenged ( 承受挑战的 ) genius, to be politically correct. At least I’m obviously physically challenged. Whether I’m a genius is more open to doubt. I don’t pay much attention to how journalists describe me. I know it is media hype( 欺骗 ). They need an Einstein like figure to appeal to ( 有感染力 ). But for them to compare me to Einstein is ridiculous ( 可笑的 ). They don’t understand either Einstein’s work , or mine. Have never heard anyone say isn’t it a shame that such a brilliant mind is trapped inside a useless body. If I did, I would treat it with the contempt ( 轻蔑 ) it deserved ( 值得 ). I generally find that even people that haven’t heard of me treated me well and helpful. I’m not sensitive if occasionally ( 偶而 ) they patronize( 庇护 ) me, I just feel it’s their mistake. Being disabled or physically challenged, makes no difference to how my scientific colleagues ( 同事 ) treat me apart from practical matters like waiting while I write what I want to say.〞He currently holds the prestigious chair as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at CambridgeUniversity, which was once held by Isaac Newton. Dr. Hawking is currently working on a new theory called Open Inflation. This theory postulates ( 要求 ) that the Universe will expand forever to infinity (无限,无穷 ),, explains matter was created, and resolves (解析 ) Einstein’s equations (平衡 ) of gravity(引力 ).Steven Hawking ( Universe)“Where do we come from? How did the universe begin? Why is the universe the way it is ? How will it end?“All my life, I have been fascinated ( 着迷) by the big questions that face us, and have tried to find scientific answers to them. If , like me, you have looked at the stars, and tried to make sense of what you see, you too have started to wonder what makes the universe exist. Questions are clear and deceptively (不实地 ) simple. But the answers have always seemed beyond our reach until now.〞The ideas which had grown over two thousand years of observation havehad to be radically (完全地 ) revised (修订/改 ). In less than a hundred years, we have found a new way to think of ourselves. From sitting at the center of the universe, we now find ourselvesorbiting (绕轨道运行 ) an average-sized sun, which is just one of millions of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy (银河系 ). And our galaxy itself is just one of billions of galaxies, in a universe that is infinite and expanding. But this is far from the end of a long history of inquiry (查询,调查 ). Huge questions remain to be answered, before we can hope to have a complete picture of the universe we live in.“I want you to share my excitement at the discoveries, past and present, which have revolutionized ( 变革 ) the way we think. From the Big Bang to black holes, from dark matter to a possible Big Crunch, our image of the universe today is full of strange sounding ideas and remarkable truths. Thee story of how we arrived at this picture is the story of learning to understand what we see.〞。
【附说课步骤方法要求】人教版高中英语二级:Makea difference说课稿
人教版高中英语二级:Makea difference说课稿Good morning, everyone. My name is xxx. It’s my pleasure to have an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas . My topic is No Boundaries taken from Senior English for China Student’s Book 2A unit1. It is made up of four parts.Part 1 Teaching MaterialThis lesson is an extensive reading. By studying No Boundaries, the Ss can improve their reading ability; get know something about the famous scientist Stephen Hawking; and learn the spirit of Hawking. At the same time, we should get the students to discuss something about Hawking to improve their oral ability and understand the passage better. Let the Ss become stronger-mind to face the difficulty in their lives. On studying the teaching material and analyzing the regulation of the Ss’ growing of mind, I put forward the teaching objectives according to English Syllabus and new lesson standard.1 Perception objectiveboundary, disable, work on, go by, be/get engaged to sb., use up, dream of, go on with, turn out, seek2 Ability objectivesTrain the Ss’ reading skills. The Ss master the language points and can apply it flexibly.3 Emotional objectivesBy studying the text, let Ss become stronger-mind to face the difficulties in their lives.Make Ss be aware of the importance of life and require them to cherish the life.Get to know something about the famous scientist Stephen Hawking.Teaching difficult points:First of all, develop some basic skills of reading.Second, learn the spirit of Hawking.Something about the Ss:The senior students have learned some vocabularies, so they can express their ideas to some extent. Some Ss are not active in the class because they are afraid of making mistakes. So we should encourage them to practice.Well, I’ll talk about my teaching methods below.Part 2 Teaching Methods:According to the modern perception theories and social intercourse teaching theories, I adopts the question-and–answer method, cooperate method and discussion method in my teaching.First, question-and–answer method, to some degree, it can arouse Ss’ interest and develop their corpus.Second, cooperate method can cultivate the Ss’s communicate skills and influence efficiency of the class.Third, discussion can help develop their thinking and communicative ability. At the same time, make use of the modern electricity teachingenthusiasm and creativity in learning English.Teaching Aids:A tape recorder, a projector and a computerPart 3 Studying Methods:Let the Ss study in a relaxed and agreeable atmosphere, Ss understand the main idea of text through the mental process of reading, saying, thinking ect. After feeling and comprehending the passage, let the Ss talk something about Hawking in their own words. Thereby, develop the Ss’abilities of organization the language and cultivate their thinking.Part 4 Teaching Process:In order to realize the teaching process systematically, properly and efficiently, under the principle of “regard Ss as the corpus, the teacher inspires for predominance”, I divided the teaching process into six steps.Step 1 Lead-inFirst, I show the question ‘…may not have more than tw elve months to live. How would you feel? What would you do?’ on the PowerPoint and ask the Ss to say something about it. And then show what Stephen Hawking thought on the PowerPoint. The purpose is to arouse the Ss’ interest of the study on Hawking.Step 2 Fast readingBefore fast reading, here some questions for them.1 Why did Stephen Hawking need a PhD?2 When did Hawking become famous? The purpose is to concentrate the Ss’s thinking, make them find the answer quickly to develop some basic skills of reading. It also prepares for knowing something about Hawking and understanding the main idea of the text.Step 3 Careful readingAsk the students to read the text carefully and find the information about Hawking’s misfortune, attitude towards difficulty, and his achievements, also the results from his disease. Then fill the information in a form. Show the form on the PowerPoint. Four minutes later, image of Stephen Hawking. Ask Ss to discuss with group members: What should we learn from Stephen Hawking? Students are given several minutes to discuss. Several minutes later, spokesmen or spokeswomen from different groups will stand up and speak out their opinions. Different people have different opinions. So it is easy to make the class the fullest. By designing the question, the Ss’ learn the spirit of Hawking. It is a good case point of “regard Ss as the corpus, the teacher inspires for predominance”.Step 4 Sum up the main idea of each partDuring this procedure Teacher will play the tape for students. Students will underline the head sentences. After listening to the tape, students will grasp the main idea of the text.Part1 (Paragraph1~3)This part tells us about Stephen Hawkins’s positive attitude towards life in the face of great difficulties. It is his positive attitude that helps him succeed.Part2 (Paragraph4~5)His achievements and his best seller A Brief History of Time.Part3 (Paragraph6)The basic steps of the scientific method.Part4 (Paragraph7)Science (The speech computer) enables Stephen Hawking to give lectures all around the world.Through fast reading, careful reading, it gains the aim of train the Ss’s reading ability to some extent.Step 5 Language pointsPick out some difficult sentences and phrased to explain. Make them understand the passage better and lay a solid basis for applying language ability.Step 6 HomeworkSurf on the Internet and find more about Stephen Hawking and his contributions to the world. In these activities students should learn to co-operate and solve problems.说课的基本步骤一、说教材1、教材的地位:从地位上、结构上、内容上、教育意义上等方面论述本节教材在本课、本书中的地位和作用。
【精品】高中英语(人教大纲)第二册上:Unit1 Making a difference(第一课时)
Unit 1 Making a differenceI. Brief Statements Based on the UnitDo you like science? Do you want to be a scientist in the future? Definitely most of us do. Do you want to know more? The whole unit of Unit 1 Making a difference will tell you more about science and scientists. It will be taught in five periods. Warming up, listening and speaking will be dealt with in the first period. In the beginning, the pictures of one great writer and three outstanding scientists and their famous sayings are shown before the students. They all made great contributions to the world and are respected by thousands of millions of people, including our middle school students. By talking about great scientists and their famous quotes, the students will be encouraged to devote them- selves to science. Listening is about the scientists' description. Detailed exercises are designed for them to do. After doing this, the students' ability to listen will surely be improved. Speaking is well designed. The students are divided into groups to discuss about science and decide which branch is the most important and useful for society. After the debate, the students' ability to speak is improved, for this is an interesting topic and we are sure all the students will be interested in it. In the second period, we deal with Pre-reading, Reading and Post-reading. The text is about an outstanding British scientist of this century. He is a man with disability. He can't speak and can only move on his wheel- chair. When he speaks he has to speak through a puter. He devotes himself to science and achieves great success. In 2002, he visited our country and spoke to many university students. There is no doubt that his unyielding spirit is encouraging thousands of millions of people. His words, “people of- ten think that science is a number of ‘true’facts that never change…and even the best theory can turn out to be wrong.〞. Shorten the distance between science and all of us. While reading the whole text and doing the exercises before and after the text, the students will learn the fine quality of the great scientist, as well as learning plenty of useful words and expressions. Meanwhile their reading ability will be improved as well. Word study and Grammar are dealt with in the third period. Especially in Grammar a lot of exercises about infinitive are designed. After doing them, this part will surely be well mastered by the students. The fourth period deals with integrating skills. In the reading passage, the question "how to make a scientist" will be answered. It tells us that if knowledge is power, then perhaps creativity can be described as the ability to use that power. Scientists must be creative and use their imagination all the time. In the end, the students are required to write about their favouritescientist. After learning all the con- tents of this unit, the students are sure to write the passage well. In the fifth period, we'll deal with the grammar--the Infinitive.Ⅱ.Teaching Goals1. Talk about science and scientists.2. Practise describing people and debating.3. Learn more about the Infinitive.4. Write a descriptive paragraph.Ⅲ. Teaching Time: Five periodsIV. Background Information1. THE BEGINNING OF TIME AND A REMARKABLE MAN CALLED STEPHEN HAWKINGIf you have ever thought about how the universe began and whether time has a beginning or an ending, then you should know about a 55-year-old Englishman called Stephen Hawking. Why? Because he is considered to be one of the brainiest men in the world and to be the modern successor of Albert Einstein.Stephen has spent his life studying and thinking about the origins of the universe and how it can be explained by using the modern theories of physics such as Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. His discoveries and his scientific proposals have been revolutionary. People call him a genius.Just as amazing is the fact that since his early twenties, he has been suffering from an incurable diseaseof the nervous system which has affected his movements and his speech. But, fortunately, although he must use a wheelchair and other technical aids to do things, his brain functions perfectly. In- deed,it functions better than the vast majori ty of people’s. So,in spite of a severe disability,he has made tremendous contributions to our understanding of our universe. So, what does Stephen think about the beginnings of our world? Well, he thinks(along with others) that it began around fifteen billion years ago. He also thinks that our universe was probably created by an enormous explosion,a “Big Bang〞. This is a view held by many cosmologists (scientists who study the universe). But scientists hold different views about what the universe was like before the Big Bang. Some people think that there is no way that modern physics can explain or predict anything before the Big Bang. Many other people think that the Big Bang must have been the work of God.Stephen Hawking has his own view on what the universe was like before the Big Bang. He has suggested that, yes, we can say that the universe and time began at one particular point(a Big Bang). But, this one point was just an ordinary point in time like, say, the northpole is a point on the smooth surface of the earth. It was not a point of real beginning, just a point.Stephen believes that if we can use ourpresent knowledge of the laws of physics to understand how the universe began, then we w ill not have to believe that a “God〞or a spiritual force made the Big Bang. What do you think about our beginnings? If you would like to read more about Stephen's ideas on the origins of the universe, then you should read his best seller A Brief History of Time.In spite of his difficult illness and his confinement to a wheelchair, Stephen Hawking works as a Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge;holding the same position held by another famous scientist, Isaac Newton, in1663. It may be that the name Hawking could bee just as well known in history as that of his famous predecessor.2. Stephen Hawking in ChinaStephen Hawking, the disabled author of A Brief History of Time is launching his second journey to China in Hangzhou of Zhejiang Province. His first visit was over 10 years ago.The great theoretical scientist has been invited to attend a state-of-the-art mathematics research institute at ZhejiangUniversity, Hangzhou-based Dushi Kuaibao reported. On Sunday evening, he made his debut at a press conference held at Shangri-La hotel, Hangzhou. Hawking appeared at about 5:00 p.m. with his wife. The 50-year-old man answered a total of nine questions with the help of his puter.“Experts in theoretical science are dispersed around the world, but we need munication. I am very glad that the world's first-class conference is being held in China this time,〞he said.“I find the real universe much more interesting than the one in the film Star Wars,〞Hawking joked. “I encourage young people to study theoretical physics first if they are interested in it.〞Stephen Hawking has worked on the basic laws which govern the universe. With Roger Penrose he showed that Einstein's General Theory of Relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. These results indicated it was necessary to unify General Relativity with Quantum Theory, the other great scientific development of the first half of the 20th century. One consequence of such a unification theory would be that black holes would not be pletely black, but emit radiation and eventually evaporate and disappear. Another conjecture is that the universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary time. This would imply that the way the universe began was pletely determined by the laws of science. But the talented man who has produced such rich work suffers serious Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He is one of the350 000 sufferers in the world. The disease kills over 100 000 people every year.“I like life and I love life,my family and music give me the greatest happiness, 〞smiled Hawking, who can only move three fingers. In the ing year, Hawking said he is scheduled to write a new edition of A Brief History of Time for young children.“A Brief History of Time is my first book for mon people.
