"There is no private house," said he, "in which people can enjoythemselves so well as at a capital tavern. Let there be ever so great plenty of good things, ever so much grandeur, ever so much elegance, ever so much desire that everybody shouldbe easy, in the nature of things it cannot be: there must always be some degree of care andanxiety. The master of the house is anxious to entertain his guests; the guests are anxiousto be agreeable to him; and no man but a very impudent dog indeed can as freelycommand what is in another's house as if it were his own. Whereas at a tavern there is ageneral freedom from anxiety. You are sure you are welcome; the more noise you make, themore trouble you give, the more good things you call for, the welcomer you are. No servantswill attend you with the alacrity which waiters do, who are excited with the prospect of animmediate reward(10) in proportion as(11) they please. No, sir; there is nothing which has asyet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern orinn.小客栈的乐趣我们在查普尔壕斯一家极好的小客栈里吃饭,约翰逊博土在那儿详细叙述了英格兰的小客栈和小旅馆的妙处,并得意洋洋地指出法国人没有任何这等完美的小客栈生活。
高中英语 双语美文阅读 The wisdom of one word 改变
The wisdom of one word Isn’t it amazing how one person, sharing one idea, at the right time and place can change the course of your life’s history? This is certainly what happened in my life. When I was 14, I was hitchhiking from Houston, Texas, through El Paso on my way to California. I was following my dream, journeying with the sun. I was a high school dropout with learning disabilities and was set on surfing the biggest waves in the world, first in California and then in Hawaii, where I would later live.Upon reaching downtown El Paso, I met an old man, a bum, on the street corner. He saw me walking, stopped me and questioned me as I passed by. He asked me if I wa s running away from home, I suppose because I looked so young. I told him, "Not exactly, sir," since my father had given me a ride to the freeway in Hou ston and given me his blessings while saying, "It is important to follow your dream and what is in your heart, Son.”The bum then asked me if he could buy me a cup of coffee. I told him, "No, sir, but a soda would be great." We walked to a corner malt4 shop and sat down on a couple of swiveling stools while we enjoyed our drinks. After conversing for a few minutes, the friendly bum told me to follow him. He told me that he had something grand to show me and share w ith me. We walked a couple of blocks until we came upon the downtown El Paso Public Library. We walked up its front steps and stopped at a small information stand. Here the bum spoke to a smiling old lady, and asked her if she would be kind enough to watch my things for a moment while he and I entered the library. I left my belongings with this grandmotherly figure and entered into this magnificent hall of learning. The bum first led me to a table and asked me to sit down and wait for a moment while he looked for something special amongst the shelves. A few moments later, he returned with a couple of old books under his arms and set them on the table. He then satdown beside me and spoke. He started with a few stateme nts that were very special and that ch anged my life. He said, "There are two things that I want to teach you, young man, and they are these:"Number one is to never judge a book by its cover, for a cover c an fool you." He followed with, "I’ll bet you think I m a bum, don t you, young man?"I said, "Well, uh, yes, I guess so, sir.""Well, young man, I’ve got a little surprise for you. I am one of the wealthiest men in the world. I have probably everything any man could ever want. I originally come from the Northeast and have all the things that money can buy. But a year ago, my wife passed away, bless her soul, and since then I have been deeply reflecting upon life. I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life, one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on the streets. I made a commitment to myself to do exactly that for one year. For the past year, I have been going from city to city doing just that. So, you see, don’t ever judge a book by its cover, for a cover can fool you."Number two is to learn how to re ad, my boy. For there is only one thing that people can’t take away from you, and that is your wisdom." At that moment, he reached forward, grabbed my right hand in his and put them upon the books he d pulled from the shelves. They were the writings of Plato and Aristotle-immortal classics from ancient times. The bum then led me back past the smiling old woman near the entran ce, down the steps and back on the streets near where we first met. His parting request was for me to never forget what he taught me.Bum n. 游荡者, 游民, 闹饮 adj. 无价值的 vi. 过游民生活, 免费得到, 流浪 vt. 乞讨如果一个人,在适当的时候和地方因为一句话而改变了他的人生历程,你会感到惊异和不可思议吗?然而这的确是千真万确的,它就发生在我14岁那年。

阅读美文英文作文高中英文:Reading high school-level English articles is a great way to improve your language skills. It allows you to learn new vocabulary, sentence structures, and writing styles. In addition, it exposes you to various topics and ideas that you may not have encountered before.Personally, I enjoy reading articles about science and technology. These topics are always changing and evolving, and I find it fascinating to learn about the latest advancements and discoveries. One article that I recently read was about the development of self-driving cars. It discussed the potential benefits and drawbacks of this technology, as well as the challenges that need to be overcome before it can become a reality.Another topic that I find interesting is psychology. I like reading articles that explore the human mind andbehavior. For example, I recently read an article that discussed the concept of emotional intelligence and how it can be developed and improved.Reading English articles also helps me to improve my writing skills. By seeing how other writers structure their sentences and paragraphs, I can learn new techniques and apply them to my own writing. It also helps me to expand my vocabulary and use more sophisticated words and phrases.

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious1 out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside.Once I left home to hitch-hike2to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn’t easy, and there were many times I didn’t feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different, not so outwardly sure of myself.I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope, who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. A nd my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren’t there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me.I pointed out,“She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been.” My mom said these were wonderful qualities, but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults—and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn’t be replaced.I became a searcher, wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3pressure to act in ways that I didn’t like any more, and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place. Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can’t be.

“I’m trying to get Mom to let me bring you home,” Jamie told the creature. “I know you’re not really a pet. You’re a friend… sort of. But I can’t let you stay out here in the cold. Winter’s coming soon. It gets really cold here then. And sometimes Mom doesn’t let me go outside when it snows.”
Example IV
A Few Thoughts on Sleep的最后一小段: Sleep is most graceful in an infant; soundest, in one who has been tired in the open air; completest, to the seaman after a hard voyage; most welcome, to the mind haunted with one idea; most touching to look at, in the parent that has wept; lightest, in the playful child; proudest, in the bride adored.
译文1
A cinder - path winds along by the side of the pool. It is off the beaten track and few pass this way even by day, so at night it is still more quiet. Trees grow thick and bosky all around the pool, with willows and other trees I cannot name by the path. On nights when there is no moon the track is almost terrifyingly dark, but tonight it was quite clear, though the moonlight was pale.

The Definition of a Gentleman何谓君子Hence it is, that it is almost a definition of a gentleman, to say he is one who never inflicts pain. This description is both refined and, as far as it goes, accurate. He is mainly occupied in merely removing the obstacles which hinder the free and unembarrassed action of those about him; and he concurs with their movements rather than takes the initiative himself. His benefits may be considered as parallel to what are called comforts or conveniences in arrangements of a personal nature: like an easy chair or a good fire, which do their part in dispelling cold and fatigue, though nature provides both means of rest and animal heat without them.
