勇敢的⼼影⽚根据13世纪末，14世纪初发⽣在苏格兰的真实事件改编。
在威廉.华莱⼠还是孩⼦的时候，他的⽗亲，苏格兰的英雄马索.华莱⼠在与英军的⽃争中牺牲了。
幼⼩的他在⽗亲的好友的指导下学习⽂化和武术。

英王爱德华一世察觉事态严重，亲自率领更强的军队对付华莱士，双方在福柯克（Falkirk）交战，然而华莱士却遭到联合的苏格兰贵族背叛，在福柯克之役战败。
在福柯克之役失败后，华莱士开始采取躲藏游击战术对抗英军，并且对于背叛的两位苏格兰贵族采取报复行动。
