Choose the one that you think is the correct answer.Passage AClearly if we are to participate in the society in which we live we must communicate with other people. A great deal of communicating is performed on a person-to-person basis by the simple means of speech .If we travel in buses, buy things in shops, or eat in restaurants, we are likely to have conversations where we give information or opinions, receive news or comment, and very likely have our views challenged by other members of society.Face-to-face contact is by no means the only form of communication and during the last two hundred years the art of mass communication has become one of the dominating factors ofcontemporary society. Two things, above others, have caused the enormous growth of the communication industry. Firstly, inventiveness has led to advances in printing, telecommunications, photography, radio and television. Secondly, speed has revolutionized the transmission and reception of communications so that local news often takes a back seat to national news, which itself is often almost eclipsed by international news.No longer is the possession of information confined to a privileged minority. In the last century the wealthy man with his own library was indeed fortunate, but today there are public libraries. Forty years ago people used to flock to the cinema, but now far more people sit at home and turn on the TV to watch a programmer that is being channeled into million of homes. Communication is no longer merely concerned with the transmission of information. The modern communication industry influences the way people live in society and broadens their horizons by allowing access to information, education and entertainment. The printing, broadcasting and advertising industries are all involved with informing, educating and entertaining. Although a great deal of the material communicated by the mass media is very valuable to the individual and to the society of which he is a part, the vast modern network of communications is open to abuse. However, the mass media are with us for better, for worse, and there is no turning back.41. A great deal of communication is performed on a __________.A) non-verbal basisB) written form basisC) face-to-face basisD) verbal basis42. In the first paragraph the writer emphasized the __________ of face-to-face contact in social settings.A) natureB) limitationC) usefulnessD) creativity43. It is implied in the passage that __________.A) local news used to be the only source of informationB) local news still takes a significant placeC) national news is becoming more popularD) international news is the fastest transmitted news44. Which of the following statements is INCORRECT?A) To possess information used to be a privilege.B) Public libraries have replaced private libraries.C) Communication means more than transmission.D) Information influences ways of life and thinking.45. From the last paragraph we can infer that the writer is __________.A) indifferent to the harmful influence of the mass mediaB) happy about the drastic changes in the mass mediaC) pessimistic about the future of the mass mediaD) concerned about the wrong use of the mass mediaPassage BRobert Spring, a 19th century forger, was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he prospered by selling his small but genuine collection of early U.S. autographs. Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries to England and Canada for sale and circulation.Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can‟t approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who do not have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title pages, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals. In Spring‟s time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the southern states, so Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General “Stonewall” Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny‟s financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.46. Why did Spring sell his false autographs in England and Canada?A) There was a greater demand than in America.B) There was less chance of being detected there.C) Britain was Spring‟s birthplace.D) The prices were higher in England and Canada.47. After the Civil War, there was a great demand in Britain for __________.A) southern moneyB) southern manuscripts and lettersC) signatures of George Washington and Ben FranklinD) Civil War battle plans48. Robert Spring spent 15 years __________.A) running a bookstore in PhiladelphiaB) as a forgerC) corresponding with Miss Fanny JacksonD) as a respectable dealer49. According to the passage, forgeries are usually sold to __________.A) sharp-eyed expertsB) book dealersC) persons who aren‟t expertsD) owners of old books50. Who was Miss Fanny Jackson?A) The only daughter of General “Stonewall” Jackson.B) A little-known girl who sold her father‟s papers to Robert Spring.C) Robert Spring‟s daughter.D) An imaginary person created by Spring.Passage CBelieve it or not, blue jeans have been around for over 130 years. Levi Strauss created the first blue jeans as work pants for gold mine workers in San Francisco. Today, the Levi‟s brand is sold worldwide. Now people around the world have greater and greater passion for the denim clothes. Jeans jackets, jeans shirts and suits can be found in hundreds and thousands of stores and street markets in most countries. The jeans have become a fashion statement.Jeans today are available in many colors and designs. Young people like to mix and match colors and sizes to create different looks. Faded and torn jeans are especially fashionable. Some washed denim clothes giving the effect of dark and light color patches are most popular. Many wearers decorate their jeans and jean jackets. Colorful patches, zippers, chains and tassels are all part of the personal touch. People in America, Japan and Hong Kong decorate their jean jackets in a very artistic way.Apart from the decoration the most important part of the jeans is the label. From the label alone one can tell the quality and the price of the product and whether it is imported or homemade. Classic labels such as the Levi‟s, Jordache and Calvin Klein demand a fair price. Jive, Lawman and the Apple jeans also have much appeal. Local brands in many countries and areas have an uphill battle to gain support. Fake brand name jeans are a big business in many places.51. It is a group of huge stone statues of four American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. President Washington is the founding father of the country; the 3rd President Jefferson drafted the U.S. Declaration of Independence; the 16th president Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and the 26th president Roosevelt protected the average people's right to compete fairly with trusts. All the four presidents made outstanding achievements for their country. They were pioneers of U.S. history. The stone statues of the presidents were built at the suggestion of an historian in the state of Dakota, with a view to carrying forward the U.S. pioneering spirit in eternity The famed artist Gutzon Borglum, a naturalized Danish-American, made the design and was in charge of the project of historic significance. It was the 30th president Calvin Coolidge who announced in 1927 the start of the project. Before the work done, the sculptor passed away at 73 years old. He was then succeeded by his son, and it was not until 1941 that the national monument was finished. As the stone statues were rather enormous, directional blasting was used. Explosives were used to blow up the peak into models first, and then the stonemasons carved them into statues with tools. The broken stones weighed about 450,000 tons in total. This project was the fruit of arduous work done by a contingent of 360 masons over 14 years. A sum of one million dollars was spent.55. Only the 1st, 3rd, 16th and 26th presidents were carved on the stone, becauseA) after they had been finished, they were no more room for others.B) they all had a good reputation.C) they were very lucky enough to be selected by chance.D) they had all contributed much to the country.56. What‟s the purpose of the erection of stone statues?A) To show that they are honored by the living.B) To show the statue art with the help of the fame of presidents.C) To open a new scenery spot for money.D) To compliment U.S. pioneering spirit and make it permanent.57. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A) Rushmore Peak is 1829 meters high.B) Except for the 1st, 3rd, 16th and 26th presidents, other presidents did nothing brilliant and important.C) Gutzon Borglum was not American in origin.D) The stone statues were mainly made by masons' carving.Passage ELew Archer, the detective hero created by Ross McDonald in The Moving Target (1949), is more literary in his tastes than Mike Hammer, and so more apt to muse on fate and the past than to create a political philosophy out of the individualist fantasies of the present. In part, Archer owed his special sensitivity to the fact that his creator placed him in the hastily thrownup world of California and West Coast rather than in the grimy eastern cities of Spillane and Hammer. Attuned to history as much as to action, Archer is more fascinated by the past patterns of relationships that erupt into the present than by the immediacies of violence and personal confrontation. Like other American naturalists, both Archer and Hammer pride themselves on their ability to know all the parts of town and country. But McDonald explores what Spillane essentially disregards the intricacies of family and the gradation of social class. Thus Spillane‟s hero seems to spring from Hammett and Hemingway, while McDonald‟s Archer owes his lineage to Chandler and Faulkner.58. What is the author‟s main purpose in the passage?A) To explain the plot of The Moving TargetB) To show the importance of setting in the detective novelC) To prove that Archer and Hammer are literary heroesD) To compare two characters in detective fiction59. In the second sentence of the passage the word …creator‟ refers to a __________.A) fantasistB) naturalistC) writerD) philosopher60. Which of the following is LEAST likely to be characteristic of an Archer story?A) A violent argumentB) A California settingC) A concern with social classD) A study of family relationshipsPart III Cloze (0.5×20=10 )Directions: Decide which the choices below would correctly complete the passage if inserted in the corresponding blanks. Journalists and TV people, we know, are 61 to record what goes on: but in trying to get the best 62 they can, they may sometimes seem amazingly cold-blooded. In the massacre that followed the British quitting India, 63 was a photographer who made a sorrowing Indian family bury and rebury 64 dead several times 65 he got a perfect shot. A BBC sound man held up a Nigerian execution for half an hour while he adjusted his sound equipment; you could say it didn‟t66 any difference to the final outcome, but it doesn‟t make you feel especially warm towards the man67 . Should journalists and photographers join in, 68 just stand back and watch while people kill 69 another? It‟s a tricky questio n, not just a 70 of how brave anyone is feeling at the time, 71 without authentic pictures, how will the world know, how should the world believe 72 crimes are committed? One dead photographer does not do much for the cause he cares about, even 73 he did feel forced to join in and take sides. To stay out of the fight, to write 74 what‟s going on, to treat75 with both sides, as a doctor will cure soldiers in 76 uniform or a lawyer argue for either side —that is supposed to be our code, and when it 77 to the crutch, we probably do better trying to stick 78 that, than rushing off on individual impulse. But is there nota point in any profession 79 you are forced back against the wall 80 a human being? I think there is, and I was.61. A) ready B) supposed C) responsible D) eager62. Write a short note of apology to your class monitor, Tom..Part III. Write a précis for the following passage. (60%)I don’t know why so many people have it in for Microsoft. Jealousy, I guess. After all, it’s not many people who can persuade you buy something that’s not working properly, and then charge you in advance for something that may or may not be better. Many of you probably know that July 31 was the final deadline for Microsoft’s volume customers to pay for the company’s new subscription-based way of selling software. I won’t bore you with the details of the new licensing program, called Licensing 6.0. It’ll be enough just to say it has forced companies and governments all over the world to rethink their software budgets and whether they can truly afford to keep buying Microsoft server, operating-system and office-suite software. Or, more to their terror, whether they can afford not to.The fact is like this: Software manufacturers rely on selling new versions of their programs to get revenue. But this is unpredictable: How can you be sure everyone is going to Office 97 suite, for example, meaning they not only avoided the Office2000 upgrade, but also Office XP.In software terms, they’re like those annoying tribes that people keep discovering. These tribes seem happy and content wandering around in bits of clothes made of leaves, and drinking their simple but strong tree-sap wine, carefully ignorant of the benefits of air-conditioning , cable TV , etc.So Microsoft’s come up with a novel solution that ensures that these slow-mover—the Office 97 users, not the annoying tribes, -- buy upgrades. This guarantees the company’s revenues to remain nice and steady.Under these new licensing rules, a volume customer is encouraged to subscribe to software, rather than purchasing it immediately. On the plus side he’ll get all the fixes, support, and new versions that come out during the subscription period, as well as being able to spread out his costs. On the downside he won’t actually own the software he’s been using, and won’t be guaranteed an updated version unless it comes out during the subscription period. This program, ironically, is called Software Assurance, which not only sounds like something from persistent salesmen, but also seems to be a misused name, due to the lack of assurance it offers.Unsurprisingly, here’re some serious complaints going on, which has forced Microsoft to extend the deadline twice. Governments, with strict software budgets, are actively looking elsewhere. Peru is contemplating a law requiring all public institutions to switch to software that can be adapted and rewritten freely without copyright restriction. And Norway last month allowed its contracts with Microsoft to expire, opening the door for cheaper alternatives. What should you do? Personally, I’d prefer leaf skirts: there’s no compelling reason to upgrade to Office 2000 or XP. The added features you’re paying for with each upgrade are rarely must-have items; in most cases they’re either decorative or actually making using the software harder. In nearly all cases they’re rarely used andwhen they are they just bring trouble. When I tried to make use of a feature which supposedly allowed me to update text simultaneously across documents, everything ended up looking like the morning after a student party I once attended in a farmyard.I spent hours converting the fancy new formulas to plain old text. Indeed, with about half of users still happy with Office 97, you’d better save your Word documents in the older format just in case another user can’t read your file properly. If you want to save money, consider dropping Microsoft altogether. There are alternatives to Office: StarOffice, from Sun Microsystems is into its sixth version and sells for $80, or 20% of Microsoft Office. Better yet, Software602 Inc. offers an office package for free with an optional add-on for $30. another option: gobeProductive, $75 from GoBe Software Inc.For Microsoft, stuck with competition from earlier release of its own products, all this argument makes sense. For the rest of us? Stick with software that you’re happy with as long as you can. And meanwhile, enjoy your tree-sap wine.基础英语写作参考答案Part I (1*20=20%)1.economic2. further3. prosecuted4. who5. whoever6. lie7. stand8. indescribably9. occasional 10. steadily 11. terribly 12. dark 13. is 14. is 15. improves 16. plan17. has 18. raised 19. all the last few 20. lovely shining large round Part II Note-writing (20%)I.格式: (占3分)包括日期、称呼、和结尾三部分,各占1分。

Read the following passages, and then answer the questions. (20%)Passage AIf you are ever lucky to be invited to a formal dinner party in Paris, remember that the French have their own way of doing things, and that even your finest manners may not be “correct”by French custom. For example, if you think showing up promptly at the time given on the invitation, armed with gifts of wine and roses, complimenting your hostess on her cooking, laughing heartily at the host’s jokes and then leaping up to help the hostess will make you the perfect guest, think again. Here Madame Nora Chabal, the marketing director of the Ritz Hotel in Paris, explained how it works. The first duty of the guest is to respond to the invitation within 48 hours. And, the guest may not ask to bring a guest because the hostesshas chosen her own.Flowers sent in advance are the preferred gift. They may also be sent afterwards with a thank-you note. It is considered a very bad form to arrive with a gift of flowers vase when she is too busy to do that.See, that’s the logic! The type of flowers sent has a code of its own, too. One must never send chrysan-themums because they are considered too humble a flower for occasion. Carnations are considered bad luck, and calla lilies are too reminiscent(令人联想)of funerals(葬礼). A bouquet of red roses is a declaration of romantic intent. Don’t send those unless you mean it, and never to a married hostess. And though the French love wine, you must never bring a bottle to a dinner party. Why, it’s as if you feared your hosts would not have enough wine o n hand, and that’s an insult. You may, however, offer a box of chocolates which the hostess will pass after dinner with coffee. If an invitation is for eight o’clock, the considerate guest arrives at 8:15. Guests who arrive exactly on time or early are mere thoughtless ones who are not giving the hostess those last few minutes she needs to deal with details and crises. The “correct” guest arrives between 15 to 20 minutes after the hour because dinner will be served exactly 30 minutes past the time of the invitation.(1). Which of the following is right about sending flowers?A. If someone is dead, send chrysanthemums or calla lilies.B. If someone is ill in hospital, send carnations.C. If you are invited to a dinner party, send red roses to the hostess.D. If you are in love with someone, send red roses.(2). If you are too busy to send flowers in advance, what should you do?A. Bring a bouquet of flowers when you go to the party.B. Send a bouquet of flowers afterwards with a thank-you note.C. Bring a bottle of wine instead of a bouquet of flowers.D. The hostess will never mind if you send flowers or not.(3). What does the word“considerate”in the last paragraph mean?A. 尊敬的B. 值得考虑的C. 考虑周到的D. 相当多的(4). What is the passage mainly about?A. How to hold a dinner party.B. How to send flowers.C. Good manners at a French dinner party.(5). In France, if you are invited to a dinner party due at eight forty, what is the best time you arrive?A. 8:25.B. 8:10.C. 9:00.D. 8:35.Passage BOne silly question I simply can’t understand is “How do you feel?”Usually the question I asked of a man’s action—a man on the go, walking along the street or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He’ll probably say, “Fine, I’m all right, ” but you’ve put a bug in his ear—maybe now he’s not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he overlooked(忽略) that morning. It starts him worrying a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else. “How do you feel?”Every question has its time and place. It’s perfectly acceptable, for example, to ask “How do you feel?” if you’re visiting a close friend in hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying take a train, or sitting at his desk working, it’s no time to ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays, was in his eighties, someone asked him, “How do you feel?” Shaw put him in his place. “When you reach my age, ” he said, “either you feel all right or you’re dead. ”(6). According to the writer, greetin gs such as “How do you feel?”______.A. show one’s consideration for othersB. are a good way to make friendsC. are proper to ask a man in actionD. generally make one feel uneasy(7). The question “How do you feel?” seems to be correct and suitable when asked of ______.A. a man working at his deskB. a person having lost a close friendC. a stranger who looks worriedD. a friend who is ill(8). The writer seems to feel that a busy man should______.A. be praised for his effortsB. never be asked any questionC. not be bothered(烦扰)D. be discouraged from working so hard(9). George Bernard’s reply in the passages shows his______.A. cheerfulnessB. clevernessC. kindnessD. politeness(10). “You’ve put a bug in his ear” means that you’ve______.A. made him laughB. shown concern for himC. made fun of himD. given him some kind of warningPart III Writing.
