四、 当enough和另一形容词同时修饰一个 名词时, 有两种不同的位置。 Ⅰ. enough放在形容词之后,此时,enough 修饰形容词时,结构为“adj.+ enough+名 词”, 表示“足够…的…”, 如:
(1) a large enough room 一间足够大的房间 (2) a deep enough well 一口足够深的井 (3) I don’t have big enough nails to mend the cupboard. 我没有足够大的钉子修理柜子。
有时也可以将enough放在被修饰名词之后, 如: I don’t have wine enough (=enough wine) for five person. 我的酒不够5个人喝。 Ⅱ. 作表语。 只有当主语是代词、数词和 “数词+名词”时,enough才可作表语用, 如果主语是名词,enough便不能作表语用 了。如:
如果enough之后跟其它修饰语(如不定式 或for短语时), 前面的主语不受限制。 如: (1)The time is enough to finish it. (=There is enough time to finish it.) 有足够的时间完成这一工作。 (2)The food is enough for us two. (=There is enough food for us two.) 有足够我们俩吃的食物。
(4) I don’t have enough big nails to mend the cupboard. (enough修饰nails) 我没有足够多的大钉子来修理碗柜。
Ⅱ. 修饰动词。常用于句型 Can’t/can never do … enough中表示“无论怎么做都不为 过”, (1) I can never thank you enough. 我对你感激不尽。 (2) He is such a good engineer that we can not praise him enough. 他是个很好的工程师, 我们再称赞他也 不为过。
