He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to unfortunate kids so they’d look neat on that first day of classes. But then he had a light bulb moment: “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said. The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they were puzzled over a word, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review he book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids.Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process. “There was this seven-year-old who struggled through his book, stuttering over words even though he didn’t have a stutter (口吃),” said Holmes. He had the boy take the book home and practice. When the child came back a few days later, “He read it with no problems. That inspires me.”Holmes and his family have recently moved to a Chicago suburb. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says, “it’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”4.What do we know about Holmes two years ago?A.He had only one job.B.He earned a lot as a barber.C.He offered free haircuts to the poor kids.D.He was the organizer of Back to School Bash.5.The example in Paragrap3 mainly proves that _______.A.Holmes is very strict with the kidsB.Holmes also learns a lot from the kidsC.being a fluent reader needs plenty of practiceD.many kids have trouble in reading a storybook6.What can we learn from the last Paragraph?A.Holmes is dissatisfied with the world today.B.Holmes’ barbershop will have some changes.C.Holmes’ barbershop has won great popularity.D.Holmes will continue to be a storybook barber.7.What is the best title for the text?A.The Storybook BarberB.Back to School BashC.Reading Counts A LotD.Care About the KidsAny schoolchild knows that a whale breathes through its blowhole. Fewer know that a blowhole is a nostril (鼻孔) slightly changed by evolution into a form more useful for a mammal that spends its life at sea. And only a dedicated expert would know that while toothed whales, such as sperm whales, have one hole, baleen (鲸须) whales, such as humpback and Rice whales, have two.Even among the baleen whales, the placing of those nostrils differs. In some species they are close together. In others, they are much further apart. In a paper published in Biology Letters Conor Ryan, a marine biologist at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, suggests why that might be. Having two nostrils, he argues, helps whales smell in stereo (立体空间).Many types of baleen whales eat tiny animals known as zooplankton (浮游动物), whichthey catch by filtering (过滤) them from seawater using the sheets of fibrous baleen that have replaced teeth in their mouths. But to eat something you first have to find it. Toothed whales do not hunt by scent. In fact, the olfactory bulb—the part of the brain that processes smell—is absent in such creatures. But baleen whales still have olfactory bulbs, which suggests smell remains important. And scent can indeed give zooplankton away. Zooplankton like to eat other tiny creatures called phytoplankton (浮游植物). When these are under attack, they release a special gas called dimethyl sulphide, which in turn attracts baleen whales. Most animals have stereoscopic senses. Having two eyes, for instance, allows an animal to compare the images from each in order to perceive depth. Having two ears lets them locate the direction from which a sound is coming. Dr Ryan theorized that paired blowholes might bring baleen whales the same sorts of benefits. The farther apart the sensory organs are, the more information can be extracted by the animal that bears them. The researchers used drones to photograph the nostrils of 143 whales belonging to 14 different species. Sure enough, baleen whales that often eat zooplankton, such as the North Atlantic right whale, have nostrils that are farther apart than do those, such as humpback whales, that eat zooplankton occasionally. Besides allowing them to breathe, it seems that some whales use their blowholes to determine in which direction dinner lies.8.What do we know about whales’ nostrils according to the first two paragraphs?A.They are adapted ones.B.They are developed merely for smell.C.They are not easy to detect.D.They are fixed universally in numbers. 9.What plays a role when baleen whales hunt zooplankton?A.The teeth that baleen whales have.B.The smell that phytoplankton send.C.The sound waves that zooplankton create.D.The chemical signals that zooplankton give off.10.How is the concept of stereoscopic senses explained in paragraph 4?A.By quoting a theory.B.By using examples.C.By making contrast.D.By making inferences.11.What is the position of nostrils related to according to the last paragraph?A.The sense of smell.B.The possibility to attract food.C.The ability to locate food.D.The ability to communicate. In a world where everyone has their own opinions on just about everything, it’s common for people to be critical of each other’s mistakes and imperfections without noticing their own. Some individuals mistakenly think it’s their responsibility to make you into a better person. They do this by first pointing out your shortcomings directly and then providing advice on how you can improve. So what is the possible solution to criticism? If you are the one forcing others to feel ashamed of themselves, please stop. Make a conscious decision rather than highlight the negative aspect of a person’s performance or attitudes. You are more likely to offer helpful suggestions from the beginning. If you are on the receiving end of criticism, the “OK” response is a perfect solution. When someone comments negatively on a task you are doing or a personality issue of yours, a natural response is to defend and attack. However, this approach is rarely effective as it puts both parties on the defensive. Instead, simply reply with “OK”. This brief one-word response acknowledges the other person’s comment without agreeing with it or feeling necessary to engage in a debate about it.It’s crucial to stay connected to what the other person is talking about, and listen without getting upset, to be an objective observer. In fact, there is much that one can learn from a negative review. You can ask yourself: Did I make a mistake? Could I have done better? Did I give 100% of myself to the task at hand? If so, how can I improve myself? As for chronic criticizers: It is important to set strict boundary with them. Remove yourself from their presence when necessary. In any case, one can learn to be “OK” with criticism and not allow it to negatively impact your life or relationship with the other party.12.What might the author think of people who like to judge others?A.Self-centered.B.Responsible.C.Talkative.D.Warm-hearted. 13.What does a person mean by saying “OK” according to Paragraph 3?A.He thinks the advice is helpful.B.He completely agrees with the comments.C.He wants to avoid unnecessary arguments.D.He defends himself with the response. 14.What is the recommended action for dealing with chronic criticizers?A.Embrace their views.B.Criticize them in return.C.Avoid interaction if needed.D.Engage with them regularly.15.What is the most suitable title for the text?A.The Art of Giving Criticism B.Mastering Self-Defense against Criticism C.Dealing with Personal Relationships Flexibly D.The Path to Self-Improvement through CriticismLessons that are Learned from the OlympicsThe Olympic Games are enjoyed by everyone. We wanted to lead an environmentally- friendly life. None of us felt this could be accomplished where we were living and we all agreed that a move to the country would be great for everyone. Before long we set about looking for a home in Yucca, a very small town of less than 100 people, where it is normal to record temperatures above 46°C for days on end in summer and it is very wild with practically no snowfall in winter. When I called to inquire about the property, I was informed that there was no electricity available in the area. What? No electricity? I almost denied the idea immediately. But what better way is there to go green? After giving it a second thought, we decided to put in an offer and moved in on Thanksgiving Day.When we first moved to the property, we did some remodeling and stayed in our motor home. We were faced with real challenges at the time. But the frustrations just made us work harder. We slowly got things fixed and moved into the house after 38 days. While living here for the past four months has been a big adjustment, we benefit a lot from living off grid. I think one of the most educational lessons is teaching my kids the importance of conservation. They used to take power for granted. But now they realize the importance of power, together with water and gas. We start taking quicker showers, doing only full loads of laundry, turning off the water while brushing our teeth. And this has a chain effect. We are also trying to make other changes which include reducing the amount of trash we generate by recycling, growing our own organic vegetables and re-purposing things that we would have normally thrown.Overall, going without electricity has been great for our family. I hope that once my kids move out of the house, they will keep the habits that they have learned here.4.Why did the family move to the small town?A.To inspire the kids.B.To try a new lifestyle.C.To cut living expenses.D.To escape air pollution.5.What can be learned about the small town?A.It has an aging population.B.It lacks access to water.C.It has hot summer days.D.It lacks educational resources.6.What does the underlined phrase “living off grid” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?A.Dealing with poverty.B.Dealing with garbage.C.Living without pollution.D.Living without electricity.7.What is the text mainly about?A.A family switching to a simple life.B.A family helping the locals go green.C.A family traveling around the country.D.A family teaching the kids hands- on skills.Dogs are social animals and without proper training, they will behave like wild animals. They will soil your house, destroy your belongings, bar k excessively, fight other dogs and even bite you. Nearly all behavior problems are perfectly normal dog activities that occur at the wrong time or place or are directed at the wrong thing. To prevent or treat behavior problems, you are supposed to teach the dog to redirect its normal behavior to outlets that are acceptable in the domestic setting. One of the best things you can do for your dog and yourself is to obedience train it. Obedience training or training doesn't solve all behavior problems, but it is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Training pens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to instruct your dog about what you want it to do.Training is also an easy way to establish the social rank order. When your dog obeys a simple request of “come here, sit,” it is showing obedience and respect for you. It is not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the pack by using extreme measure. You can teachyour dog its subordinate role by teaching it to show submission to you. Most dogs love performing tricks for you to pleasantly accept that you are in charge.Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog. It can enrich your relationship and make living together more enjoyable. A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal.8.Which statement about dogs’ behavior problems is true?A.They result from training.B.They’re just part of nature.C.They’re wrong dog activities.D.They will be worse unless punished. 9.What is the purpose of dog training?A.To make dogs respect authority.B.To give dogs outlets for their behavior.C.To solve all their behavior problems.D.To teach dogs to perform clever tricks. 10.Why do pet dogs love performing tricks for their masters?A.To get respect from masters.B.To show their willingness to obey.C.To establish the social rank order.D.To show their affection for their masters. 11.What might a dog with effective obedience training get?A.More foods.B.More safety.C.More freedom.D.More love.Sign has become a scientific hot button. Only in the past 20 years have specialists in language study realized that sign languages are unique — a speech of the hand. They offer a new way to look into how the brain generates and understands language, and throw new light on an old scientific debate: whether language, complete with grammar, is something that we are born with, or whether it is a learned behavior. The current interest in sign language has roots in the pioneering work of one wise teacher Bill Stokoe at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., the world’s only liberal arts university for deaf people. When Bill Stokoe went to Gallaudet to teach English, the school enrolled him in a course in signing. But Stokoe noticed something odd: among themselves, students signed differently from his classroom teacher.Stokoe had been taught a sort of gestural code, each movement of the hands representing a word in English. At the time, American Sign Language (ASL) was thought to be no more than a form of pidgin English (混杂英语). But Stokoe believed the “hand talk” his students used lookedricher. He wondered: Might deaf people actually have a genuine language? And could that language be unlike any other on Earth? It was 1955, when even deaf people dismissed their signing as “substandard”. No wonder that Stokoe’s idea was considered academically wrong then.It is 37 years later. Stokoe — now devoting his time to writing and editing books and journals and to producing video materials on ASL and the deaf culture — is having lunch at a cafe near the Gallaudet campus and explaining how he started a revolution. For decades, educators fought his idea that sign languages are natural languages like English, French and Japanese. They assumed language must be based on speech, the adaptation of sound. One of the most important things to humans is to feel valued and respected by others, says Vanessa Bohns, a social psychologist, who has researched compliments. According to her research, people feel “significantly better” after both giving and receiving a compliment. 16“You handled that situation so well.”Bohns recently used her favorite compliment when she saw a server address a difficult situation with a customer at the bar. “I like it so much because you use it in anxious moments where the other person is often unsure of whether they handled a situation OK,” she says. In situations that call for a compliment, don’t second-guess yourself. Give your compliments generously. 17 That concern is unfounded.“ 18 ”This compliment — one of Bohns’ favorites — works well among romantic partners and close family members. “It’s a beautiful way to highlight how their presence turns life into something meaningful, despite boring routines of our everyday lives,” she says. If you’re afraid that giving a compliment like this will feel strange, you’re not alone. 19 If it makes you personally feel like the bar is lowered for you to give a compliment if you write it down, or if you practice saying it out loud or giving your pet cat the compliment first, do that.“Hey, great dress!”Feel free to compliment strangers. In Bohns’ research, students on a college campus were told to approach a stranger of the same gender and compliment them-about, for example, their nice shirt. Before heading out, the study participants tended to underestimate their positive effect while overestimating how annoying it would be. Across all contexts, strangers are more likely to be pleased than confused. Plus, who knows? 20A.I love the way you bring out the best in people.B.Respect is essential when you deliver compliments.C.One way to overcome this fear is to do a practice run.D.You make even ordinary moments feel extraordinary.E.You might make a new friend in addition to making someone’s day.F.With that in mind, we asked her to share some of her favorite compliments.G.People sometimes worry that they’re going over and will start to sound insincere.二、完形填空It was time to go back to school. It was the place of our last school trip. The trip was very exciting at first, because everything was new to me.On that day, we got up early and jumped onto the boats. As the boat started, snow-white water came out from below the boat, and the wind rushed into my face. The first island(岛)we arrived at was called the Island of the Lady, whose name came from the mountains looking like a beautiful lady. As the weather was nice, I spent half an hour playing with my classmates in the water. It was really fun and exciting. Everything was fine until one of my water shoes fell into the lake. So I had to go on the trip with only one shoe on.When we first walked through the forest, I thought it was a nice walk. But with only one shoe, my foot came across either cold glass pieces or hot stones along the way. As the day went on, the land became increasingly jagged(凹凸不平的). I winced(皱起脸)with every step I took. It was a trip of pain(痛苦). But then something magical happened. I suddenly found a seashell the size of my hand! I felt like I had found gold and all the pain was gone.Luckily, there was still something wonderful. The beautiful sea views and the beach treasure hunt were re ally unforgettable for me. But traveling might not be that fun for everyone, especially for those who have motion sickness(晕动症).②Motion sickness is also called travel sickness. It is quite common for many people. Because of different ways of travel, we can also call it carsickness or seasickness. People with motion sickness feel very uncomfortable while they are moving. They feel sick, like the room ar ound them won’t stop moving. It is often believed that motion sickness happens when your senses(感官)can not understand each other well, Scientific American reported. We use different parts of our body to sense movement. Our eyes tell us if we are moving. The inner ears have a special part that helps us sense our direction and balance(方向和平衡).③When you move around, for example, these body parts work well together. But when you are in a car or on an airplane, your body parts don’t know how to work with each o ther. Your inner ear tells your body that you’re moving, but your eyes say you’re sitting still because you can’t see that you’re moving. This mismatch(错配)gives us motion sickness.④▲ This may be because they have certain genes(基因)that stop mismatching senses, Bethann Hromatka, a genetics scientist from the US, told the Atlantic.⑤Although there are many ways to deal with motion sickness, scientists believe that the key is to simply try and adapt to it. For example, some astronauts do special exercises that give them a little motion sickness. After a week or two, the astronauts become used to it and don’t feel uncomfortable anymore, Sam Puma, a NASA flight doctor, told the BBC.33. What can we infer(推断)from the passage?A.Motion sickness is very common for everyone.B.Tom may have motion sickness because he sleeps all day in autumn.C.Astronauts have motion sickness because they take special exercises.D.Mary may have motion sickness because she often feels uncomfortable and sick in a taxi.34. Which sentence can be put into ▲ ?A.Besides, our genes are another reason.B.However, some special genes in the body help a lot.C.But motion sickness makes little difference to some people.D.Scientists are trying to find ways to help people with motion sickness.35. What does the phrase “adapt to” mean in the last paragraph?A.制造B.适应C.忽略D.改变36. What’s the best structure(结构)of this passage?(Paragraph(段落)1=① Paragraph 2=②…)A.B.C.D.37.
