一岁半时突患急性脑充血病, 连日的高烧夺去了她的视觉和听 觉,从此,她坠入了一个黑暗而 沉寂的世界,陷入了痛苦的深渊。
1983 年,海迪走上了文学创作的道 路,她以顽强的毅力克服疾病和困难, 精益求精地进行创作,执着地为文学 而战,至今已出版的作品有:长篇小 说《轮椅上的梦》、《绝顶》。散文 集《鸿雁快快飞》、《向天空敞开的 窗口》、《生命的追问》。翻译作品 《海边诊所》、《丽贝卡在新学校》、 《小米勒旅行记》、《莫多克——一 头大象的真实故事》等。她的作品在 社会上在青少年中引起了很强的反响, 长篇小说《轮椅上的梦》已经在日本、 韩国出版。
在美国治疗期间,以“桑兰微 笑”征服了大洋彼岸的人们。并被 美国著名的《人物》和《生活》杂 志评选为年度英雄。
继国际著名影星成龙之后,桑 兰成为了2008年申奥形象大使。
