Many people spend their vacations doing nothing on a beach, but Kirsty Ross wanted to do something different. “I spent three weeks working in the hot sun, digging to find pieces of old cups and plates,” she says. “I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent. One last characteristic is the giraffe's long black tongue. It is about 18 inches long. With their tongues, giraffes get food far above

their heads. They also clean their eyes and ears with their

tongues. Why is the giraffe's tongue black? The color protects it from the sun.
