An Invitation
• Script: A woman saw three old men sitting in her front yard. She said, "I don't think I know you, but you must be very hungry. Please come in and have something to eat." "We don't go into a house together," they replied. "Why is that?" she asked. One of the old men answered. "His name is Wealth, this is Success, and I am Love." Then he said, "Now go in and discuss with your family which one of us you want in your house." Then the woman went in and told her family what was said. She said "Let's invite Wealth. Let him come in and bring us nice things. We have been so poor. "His husband disagreed, "My dear why don't we invite Success? Don't you want me to be a successful man?" Then the daughter asked, "Would it be better to invite Love? Our life will then be filled with 1ove!" "Let's take our daughter's advice, " said the father and mother.

Interpretation: The quotation tells us the significant role that love plays in everything we do in life. Whatever we do, we should put adequate love into it so that others can feel our love and be affected by our love. What we can offer to others may be insignificant, but as long as there is love in it, the benefit will be significant. Here, love is understood in a broad sense.

For Part 1 Questions and Answers 1. How does the author begin the text?
The author begins the text by putting forth the common phenomenon that people complain about others’ not listening to them.
The term “generation gap” first came into prominence in Western countries during the 1960’s. It was used to describe the cultural differences between the baby boomers (those who were born just after World War II) and their parents. Several examples of generational differences were prominent during the period. Rock music and soul music ( 灵 乐 ), popular among the young, were mostly detested by their elders. Long hair on young males was frequently seen as a shocking act of rebellion against societal norms by their parents. Some traditional mores ( 习 俗 ) were crumbling. And many young people “dropped out” into the hippie ( 嬉 皮 士 ) counterculture. A common catchphrase of the era among young people was “don’t trust anyone over 30.”
