I was really excited when she came home for Spring Break because I got to ask her all about how she's been learning English in college. After all, English is one of the most important subjects, and I want to be super good at it when I grow up!Sarah says that learning English in college is way different from learning it in elementary school. In college, you have to take charge of your own learning. No more teachers reminding you to do your homework or quizzing you on vocab words everyweek. It's all up to you! But don't worry, my big sis gave me some awesome tips that I can't wait to share with you.Tip #1: Go to Class and Pay AttentionThis one seems pretty obvious, but Sarah says a lot of college students skip classes or zone out during lectures. She says it's really important to show up and listen carefully because professors teach lots of new concepts and give hints about what will be on exams. Sarah takes neat handwritten notes and records lectures on her laptop just in case she misses something important.Tip #2: Read, Read, Read!In college, you have to read a ton of books, articles, and other materials for your English classes. Sarah says it's crucial to keep up with the reading assignments and not fall behind. She recommends finding a quiet spot in the library or a cozy coffee shop to really focus while you read. Underline or highlight key points, look up words you don't know, and think about how the reading connects to what you're learning in class.Tip #3: Write All the TimeAnother big part of college English is writing essays, research papers, and creative pieces. Sarah writes drafts for all herassignments, getting feedback from her professors and classmates. She says it's helpful to visit the campus writing center for one-on-one tutoring. Writing regularly, even just journaling or blogging, makes you a stronger writer over time.Tip #4: Practice Speaking UpLots of English classes require participation through things like class discussions, presentations, and group projects. Sarah used to be super shy about speaking English in front of others, but she's worked hard to get over her fear. Now she's always prepared with notes, speaks slowly and clearly, and makes eye contact with her classmates. The more you practice, the more confident you'll become!Tip #5: Make English a HabitLearning English isn't just about passing tests or getting good grades. Sarah says the best way to truly master the language is to make it a daily habit. She listens to English podcasts and music, watches movies and shows without subtitles, and follows English social media accounts. She's always looking for fun ways to soak up more English wherever she goes.Tip #6: Find an English BuddyOne of the coolest things Sarah did was find an "English Buddy" through her university's language partner program. Her buddy is an international student from Spain, so they get together once a week to practice conversational English together. It's a relaxed way to improve speaking and listening skills while also making a new friend from another culture!Tip #7: Take Different Kinds of ClassesAt college, you get to choose from all sorts of different English classes. Sarah has taken literature classes where they read novels, short stories, and poems. She's also taken classes on grammar, creative writing, public speaking, and even the history of the English language itself. Trying a variety of classes keeps things interesting and helps you improve your skills in different areas.Tip #8: Get Help When You Need ItLearning a language is hard work, and sometimes you'll feel stuck or frustrated. That's totally normal! Sarah says it's important to ask for help when you're struggling. Her professors have regular office hours when students can stop by with questions. There are also free tutoring services, writing labs, and academic success workshops that can give you a boost.Tip #9: Be Patient and Have Fun!Mastering English takes a lot of time, effort, and patience. Sarah reminds me that it's a journey, not a race. Instead of stressing out, she tries to enjoy the process of learning new words, exploring different writing styles, and discovering amazing books, poems, and stories in English. With a positive mindset and a sense of fun, you'll be speaking and writing like a pro before you know it!Well, those are all the awesome tips my big sis gave me about learning English in college.
