There are places high up in the mountains of China where the villages are so remote and separated by huge valleys. How cool is that??I went ziplining at my friend's birthday party once and it was a blast, but I can't picture doing it just to get to math class. Let me explain... In the forests of Indonesia, some villages are divided by wide, rushing rivers that you can't really build a bridge over. But the kids still need to get to school on the other side. So some genius locals came up with this wild solution: They bend over these tall, bendy bamboo plants and lash them into a tight line going across the river. Then the kids just shimmy hand-over-hand along the bamboo pole to get across! It's like a tightrope, but made of plants. Just picturing that makes my stomach doflip-flops. One slip and you'd go splashing into the rapids below! Those Indonesian kids must be part monkey or something.After reading all those intense examples, I realized I shouldn't complain about my boring old school bus anymore. I'm sure it's not as exciting as ziplining over canyons or shimmying across raging rivers. But it's safe andclimate-controlled at least! Although a ride in a Venetian gondola does sound pretty dreamy...Those were just a few of the incredible ways kids get to school that blew my mind in Unit 4. We also learned some fun vocab words and expressions related to transportation. Like"rush hour" for when everyone is travelling at once and there's tons of traffic. Or "detour" for taking an alternate route to avoid something blocking the main road. My favorite new word was "hitchhike" which means sticking out your thumb on the side of the road to try and get a ride from a passing stranger. Don't worry, Mom, I won't actually be hitchhiking anytime soon!We practiced using words like "catch" and "miss" and "transfer" when talking about buses, trains, etc. Like "I missed the 8am bus so I had to catch the next one at 8:30." Or "To get to the museum, I first caught the red line subway downtown, then transferred to the east-west train." Using those transportation words made me feel like a real grown-up commuter!The unit also taught us how to give directions and explain routes. Like saying "Head north on Main Street, then turn left onto Oak Road. The library will be on your right." Or "From the airport, take Highway 40 east for 10 miles, then exit onto County Road 6 and follow the signs for the university." Speaking of which, I should learn some good directions to get to my new middle school next year. I don't want to get lost on the first day!Another thing we studied were words related to traffic and driving. Like "intersections" where roads cross paths. And "traffic jam" for when there's a bad backup of cars. We learned "vehicle"is a general word for any mode of transportation - cars, trucks, motorcycles, even bicycles and scooters. My favorite was "road rage" for when crazy angry people start yelling and honking at each other in gridlock. Sheesh, people need to chill out sometimes! It's not that serious.Overall, I had a blast learning about transportation and mobility in Unit 4. It really opened my eyes to how kids in different parts of the world have such unique ways of getting to school every day. Some have it way harder than me, trekking for miles or risking life and limb shimmying across bamboo poles. After a long flight, we finally landed in a city called Los Angeles. The airport was gigantic! We met up with a tour guide who was going to show us around for our trip. Her name was Emily and she was really nice.Our first stop was the beach in Los Angeles. I had never seen the ocean before, except in pictures and movies. It was incredible! The waves were crashing and the water stretched out as far as I could see. We played in the sand, went swimming (the water was freezing at first!), and just enjoyed the warm sunshine. That night, we went on a cruise along the coastline and admired the twinkling lights of the city against the night sky. It was magical.After L.A., we drove up the coast to San Francisco. We also visited Alcatraz Island, the former prison. Learning about its history gave me chills! We went on a cable car ride through the hilly streets which was a fun adventure. And we couldn't leave San Francisco without having clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Delicious!Our next stop was the desert in the Southwest. We visited the Grand Canyon, which is just as grand as its name! That enormous gorge seemed to go on forever. We went hiking along the rim trail and our guide Emily taught us all about how the Colorado River carved it out over millions of years. We even got to try riding a mule partway into the canyon, which was scary but really cool.After the dry desert, we headed to Las Vegas for a different kind of experience. The hotels there are gargantuan! We stayed in one that had rollercoasters, an arcade, and even an aquarium inside. It's almost like its own city. The flashy lights on the casino strip were vibrant at night. My little brother and I just loved all the fountains and spectacles. Definitely a place like no other.Our last stop was New York City, can you believe it? We saw the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Square, and so many legendary landmarks. New York felt like a blend of cultures from all around the world. The food there was amazingly diverse - we had pizza, bagels, hot dogs, you name it. We even went to a baseball game and saw the Yankees play! What an incredible backdrop with the skyscrapers towering all around the stadium.This was just a small sampling of the United States that we were able to explore. Or donatingold toys, clothes and books you don't need anymore so someone else can reuse them.And recycling means putting things like paper, plastic, glass and metal into the recycling bins so they can be turned into new products instead of ending up in landfills and the ocean. Super easy but it makes a big difference!At school, we can join an environmental club to do fun activities and learn more about nature. Planting trees is an awesome way to help since trees absorb carbon dioxide and make oxygen. We can also pick up any litter we see to keep our neighborhoods clean.At home, we can ask our parents to buy foods with less packaging that creates waste. And we can take short showers instead of baths to save water.
